Book Synopsis Survey Methods of Appraising Fishery Resources by : A. Saville

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The realization that many of the surveys which have been done in the past achieved little in relation to what could potentially have been gained, stimulated FAO to publish a series of manuals on resource surveys (Alverson 1971, Mackett 1973, Gulland 1975) which have set out ways of improving the quality of the data obtained from such surveys. However, there have been major advances in fisheries science since the earlier of these manuals was written, and accordingly it was decided, in 1976, that they should be updated and incorporated into a single volume covering all the major aspects of resource surveys.

This book was released on 1983 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selection of methods is based on lecture notes used at a FAO/DANIDA training course held in Mombasa, Kenya, in May-June 1980. The methods presented are: regression and correlation, estimation of growth parameters from length-frequency data, estimation of mortalities (total, natural, fishing mortality) and analysis of catch and effort data. A brief annotated bibliography of tropical fish stock assessment is included.

Book Synopsis Fisheries Biology, Assessment and Management by : Michael King
Download or read book Fisheries Biology, Assessment and Management written by Michael King and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This excellent second edition of Fisheries Biology, Assessment and Management, has been fully updated and expanded, providing a book which is an essential purchase for students and scientists studying, working or researching in fisheries and aquatic sciences. In the same way that excessive hunting on land has threatened terrestrial species, excessive fishing in the sea has reduced stocks of marine species to dangerously low levels. In addition, the ecosystems that support coastal marine species are threatened by habitat destruction, development and pollution. Open access policies and subsidised fishing are placing seafood in danger of becoming a scarce and very expensive commodity for which there is an insatiable demand. Positive trends include actions being taken to decrease the incidental catches of non-target species, consumer preferences for seafood from sustainable fisheries, and the establishment of no-take areas that provide refuges for marine species. But there is an urgent need to do more. Because there is an increasing recognition of the need to manage ecosystems as well as fish stocks, this second edition of this bestselling text book includes an additional chapter on marine ecology. Chapters on parameter estimation and stock assessment now include step-by-step instructions on building computer spreadsheet models, including simulations with random variations that realistically emulate the vagaries of nature. Sections on ecosystem management, co-management, community-based management and marine protected areas have been expanded to match the increased interest in these areas. Containing many worked examples, computer programs and numerous high quality illustrations, Fisheries Biology, Assessment and Management, second edition, is a comprehensive and essential text for students worldwide studying fisheries, fish biology, aquatic and biological sciences. As well as serving as a core text for students, the book is a superb reference for fisheries and aquatic researchers, scientists and managers across the globe, in both temperate and tropical regions. Libraries in all universities where fish biology, fisheries, aquatic sciences and biological sciences are studied and taught will need copies of this most useful new edition on their shelves. Book Synopsis Additions to a Revision of the Shark Genus Carcharhinus by : J. A. F. Garrick
Download or read book Additions to a Revision of the Shark Genus Carcharhinus written by J. A. F. Garrick and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Features of the valid nominal species of Aprionodon Gill (isodon Valenciennes) and Hypoprion Müller and Henle (hemiodon Valenciennes, macloti Müller and Henle, and signatus Poey), plus those of a previously unrecognized species here described as Carcharhinus leiodon n.sp., are examined and compared with those of Carcharhinus Blainville. Features studied include morphometrics, vertebral numbers and other vertebral characteristics, tooth numbers, color pattern, and some other aspects of external morphology. It is concluded that on these features C. Leiodon n.sp. is entirely encompassed within the parameters of Carcharhinus, and that, although A. isodon, H. hemiodon, H. macloti, and H. signatus each extend the range of diversity of Carcharhinus in one or more features, A. isodon is not uniquely different from Carcharhinus, and there is no common pattern of difference between the three species of Hypoprion and Carcharhinus. Accordingly, and because the nature of the teeth of Aprionodon and Hypoprion has been found insufficient to warrant generic distinction from Carcharhinus, the genera Aprionodon and Hypoprion are synonymised with Carcharhinus. A diagnosis and description are given for each of the above species. The descriptions include measurements, counts, and line illustrations that show the whole shark in lateral view, underside of head, nostril, and teeth. The geographic distribution is summarized, as are also the meager biological data available on number of embryos, size at birth, size at sexual maturity, and maximum size.
