Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Survey and Record of Woolwich and West Kent: Containing Descriptions and Records, Brought Up-to-Date, of the Geology, Botany, Zoology, Archlogy and Industries of the District, With a Brief Photographic Commentary, in Commemoration of the 12th Annual Congress, 1907, of the South Eastern Union of Sci The volume now produced differs in important respects from that announced in the original Introduction circulated with sample pages at the Woolwich Congress. The sections on Geology and Scientific Industries are on the plan originally contemplated. The Archaeological section, owing to special difficulties, falls short Of the original intention. But, on the other hand, very much valuable material was contributed for the Botanical and Zoological sections, and a great opportunity would have been lost if it had not been embodied. These sections have in consequence become greatly extended, and the Handbook has grown into a volume Of some 600 pages. It was hoped to insert an introductory chapter by Mr. C. H Grinling, Work waiting to be done - a Survey Of Surveys, giving an account Of the material available for workers for surveys Of the district from other aspects than those covered in this volume, particularly on the human and sociological side as well as pointing out the gaps that remain in the subjects already treated inviting the research Of the local student, and sketching main lines Of advance indicated by foremost workers in the different sciences. The publication of this volume has been delayed in order that thischapter might be included, in the belief that it would have linked together and illuminated the other sections, and have proved a guide and incentive to workers, Often scattered and out of touch with one another. The material accumulated through a long period had already been arranged. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Survey and Record of Woolwich and West Kent: Containing Descriptions and Records, Brought Up-to-Date, of the Geology, Botany, Zoology, Archaelogy and Industries of the District, With a Brief Photographic Commentary, in Commemoration of the 12th Annual Congress, 1907, of the South Eastern Union of Sci The Editors have to express their profound regret that unforeseen circumstances have postponed the publication of this volume almost beyond excusable limits. It was originally intended that it should be published in time for the Woolwich Congress (1907) of the South Eastern Union of Scientific Societies, and that it should consist of some 100 to 150 pages, and include a survey of the district from six different approaches, Geology, Botany, Zoology, Archaeology, Scientific Industries, and Photography. This, however, was found impracticable; and subsequent delays ensued in consequence of the premature death that closed the promising career of Mr. B. C. Polkinghorne, and the prolonged ill-health of Mr. C. H. Grinling. The volume now produced differs in important respects from that announced in the original Introduction circulated with sample pages at the Woolwich Congress. Download or read book Mobile Museums written by Felix Driver and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2021-04-19 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobile Museums presents an argument for the importance of circulation in the study of museum collections, past and present. It brings together an impressive array of international scholars and curators from a wide variety of disciplines – including the history of science, museum anthropology and postcolonial history - to consider the mobility of collections. The book combines historical perspectives on the circulation of museum objects in the past with contemporary accounts of their re-mobilisation, notably in the context of Indigenous community engagement. Contributors seek to explore processes of circulation historically in order to re-examine, inform and unsettle common assumptions about the way museum collections have evolved over time and through space. By foregrounding questions of circulation, the chapters in Mobile Museums collectively represent a fundamental shift in the understanding of the history and future uses of museum collections. The book addresses a variety of different types of collection, including the botanical, the ethnographic, the economic and the archaeological. Its perspective is truly global, with case studies drawn from South America, West Africa, Oceania, Australia, the United States, Europe and the UK. Mobile Museums helps us to understand why the mobility of museum collections was a fundamental aspect of their history and why it continues to matter today. Praise for Mobile Museums 'This book advances a paradigm shift in studies of museums and collections. A distinguished group of contributors reveal that collections are not dead assemblages. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries were marked by vigorous international traffic in ethnography and natural history specimens that tell us much about colonialism, travel and the history of knowledge – and have implications for the remobilisation of museums in the future.’ – Nicholas Thomas, University of Cambridge 'The first major work to examine the implications and consequences of the migration of materials from one scientific or cultural milieu to another, it highlights the need for a more nuanced understanding of collections and offers insights into their potential for future re-mobilisation.' – Arthur MacGregor
Book Synopsis A Memory of Ice by : Elizabeth Truswell
Download or read book A Memory of Ice written by Elizabeth Truswell and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the southern summer of 1972/73, the Glomar Challenger was the first vessel of the international Deep Sea Drilling Project to venture into the seas surrounding Antarctica, confronting severe weather and ever-present icebergs. A Memory of Ice presents the science and the excitement of that voyage in a manner readable for non-scientists. Woven into the modern story is the history of early explorers, scientists and navigators who had gone before into the Southern Ocean. The departure of the Glomar Challenger from Fremantle took place 100 years after the HMS Challenger weighed anchor from Portsmouth, England, at the start of its four-year voyage, sampling and dredging the world’s oceans. Sailing south, the Glomar Challenger crossed the path of James Cook’s HMS Resolution, then on its circumnavigation of Antarctica in search of the Great South Land. Encounters with Lieutenant Charles Wilkes of the US Exploring Expedition and Douglas Mawson of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition followed. In the Ross Sea, the voyages of the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror under James Clark Ross, with the young Joseph Hooker as botanist, were ever present. The story of the Glomar Challenger’s iconic voyage is largely told through the diaries of the author, then a young scientist experiencing science at sea for the first time. It weaves together the physical history of Antarctica with how we have come to our current knowledge of the polar continent. This is an attractive, lavishly illustrated and curiosity-satisfying read for the general public as well as for scholars of science.

Book Synopsis The Medieval City by : Norman Pounds
Download or read book The Medieval City written by Norman Pounds and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2005-04-30 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to the life of towns and cities in the medieval period, this book shows how medieval towns grew to become important centers of trade and liberty. Beginning with a look at the Roman Empire's urban legacy, the author delves into urban planning or lack thereof; the urban way of life; the church in the city; city government; urban crafts and urban trade, health, wealth, and welfare; and the city in history. Annotated primary documents like Domesday Book, sketches of street life, and descriptions of fairs and markets bring the period to life, and extended biographical sketches of towns, regions, and city-dwellers provide readers with valuable detail. In addition, 26 maps and illustrations, an annotated bibliography, glossary, and index round out the work. After a long decline in urban life following the fall of the Roman Empire, towns became centers of trade and of liberty during the medieval period. Here, the author describes how, as Europe stabilized after centuries of strife, commerce and the commercial class grew, and urban areas became an important source of revenue into royal coffers. Towns enjoyed various levels of autonomy, and always provided goods and services unavailable in rural areas. Hazards abounded in towns, though. Disease, fire, crime and other hazards raised mortality rates in urban environs. Designed as an introduction to life of towns and cities in the medieval period, eminent historian Norman Pounds brings to life the many pleasures, rewards, and dangers city-dwellers sought and avoided. Beginning with a look at the Roman Empire's urban legacy, Pounds delves into Urban Planning or lack thereof; The Urban Way of Life; The Church in the City; City Government; Urban Crafts and Urban Trade, Health, Wealth, and Welfare; and The City in History.
Book Synopsis Women in Early British and Irish Astronomy by : Mary Brück
Download or read book Women in Early British and Irish Astronomy written by Mary Brück and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-25 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Careers in astronomy for women (as in other sciences) were a rarity in Britain and Ireland until well into the twentieth century. The book investigates the place of women in astronomy before that era, recounted in the form of biographies of about 25 women born between 1650 and 1900 who in varying capacities contributed to its progress during the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. There are some famous names among them whose biographies have been written before now, there are others who have received less than their due recognition while many more occupied inconspicuous and sometimes thankless places as assistants to male family members. All deserve to be remembered as interesting individuals in an earlier opportunity-poor age. Placed in roughly chronological order, their lives constitute a sample thread in the story of female entry into the male world of science. The book is aimed at astronomers, amateur astronomers, historians of science, and promoters of women in science, but being written in non-technical language it is intended to be of interest also to educated readers generally.

Book Synopsis Aboriginal Placenames by : Luise Hercus
Download or read book Aboriginal Placenames written by Luise Hercus and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aboriginal approaches to the naming of places across Australia differ radically from the official introduced Anglo-Australian system. However, many of these earlier names have been incorporated into contemporary nomenclature, with considerable reinterpretations of their function and form. Recently, state jurisdictions have encouraged the adoption of a greater number of Indigenous names, sometimes alongside the accepted Anglo-Australian terms, around Sydney Harbour, for example. In some cases, the use of an introduced name, such as Gove, has been contested by local Indigenous people. The 19 studies brought together in this book present an overview of current issues involving Indigenous placenames across the whole of Australia, drawing on the disciplines of geography, linguistics, history, and anthropology. They include meticulous studies of historical records, and perspectives stemming from contemporary Indigenous communities. The book includes a wealth of documentary information on some 400 specific placenames, including those of Sydney Harbour, the Blue Mountains, Canberra, western Victoria, the Lake Eyre district, the Victoria River District, and southwestern Cape York Peninsula.

Book excerpt: The book records the essential discoveries of mathematical and computational scientists in chronological order, following the birth of ideas on the basis of prior ideas ad infinitum. The authors document the winding path of mathematical scholarship throughout history, and most importantly, the thought process of each individual that resulted in the mastery of their subject. The book implicitly addresses the nature and character of every scientist as one tries to understand their visible actions in both adverse and congenial environments. The authors hope that this will enable the reader to understand their mode of thinking, and perhaps even to emulate their virtues in life.
