Book Synopsis Surprised by the Commandments by : Graham Beynon
Download or read book Surprised by the Commandments written by Graham Beynon and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grew out of a slightly reluctant sermon series which, as it turned out, became 'one of the most talked about in our church', says the author. There was a sense of rediscovering the 10 commandments, 'and so coming to appreciate and value them afresh', he enthuses. We see the commandments as a summary of God's law for Israel. The rest of the law in the Old Testament is an unpacking of these commands. The New Testament then shows us a variety of repetition, enlargement and fulfilment of the different commands. The result is a hugely informative and helpful overview of Christian living and ethics. A side benefit comes in the form of worked examples of how to move from the Old Testament to the New Testament. This is a popular, clear and accessible volume, with pastoral application for today's believer. Tragically, it is often the absence of guidelines that is a cause of confusion and heartache in today's society.

The rise in popularity of this phrase coincides with a growing disinterest and misunderstanding regarding the role of God's life-giving, perfect law in the Christian life. Rather than the source of joy it was intended to be, the law is viewed as an angry god's restrictions for a rebellious people. In Ten Words to Live By, Jen Wilkin presents a fresh biblical look at the Ten Commandments, showing how they come to bear on our lives today as we seek to love God and others, to live in joyful freedom, and to long for that future day when God will be rightly worshiped for eternity. Learn to see the law of God as a feast for your famished soul, open to anyone who calls on the name of the Lord.

Download or read book No Other Gods written by Ana Levy-Lyons and published by Center Street. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now includes discussion questions and contemplation exercises for individual study and reading groups. Ana Levy-Lyons, a public theologian who is equally at home in secular and religious worlds, offers a deeply perceptive reinterpretation of the Ten Commandments for our modern lives. The Ten Commandments are a spiritual resource for social justice. A politically and spiritually brazen prescription for living, the Ten Commandments would turn our world upside down if we actually followed them. Far from being only ethical norms on which everyone already agrees or a remnant of a bygone oppressive era, the Commandments are actually countercultural practices. Today the Ten Commandments are a divisive part of American culture. Religious conservatives champion them, even if they don't always practice them. Religious liberals and the nonreligious may bristle at what they perceive as antiquated moral restrictions. But, this ancient code still has vital contemporary relevance. Rev. Levy-Lyons explores ways the Commandments bring us meaning, illuminate our values, and help us navigate through the turbulent waters of social injustice, environmental crises, and societal inequity. No Other Gods looks at each Commandment in new ways, moving beyond interpersonal morality to the global economy and our hyper-connected age. From the first, You Shall Have No Other Gods Besides Me (Dethrone the Modern Deities of Political, Social, and Corporate Power), to the tenth Do Not Covet (Practice Your Liberation-You Have Enough, You Are Enough)-and all those in between-she underscores how the Commandments can produce a bold spiritual consciousness. Whether you are deeply religious or spiritual-but-not-religious, learn how the Ten Commandments can guide you to resist injustice, heal our earth, and find personal dignity amid the free-for-alls of modern life. "We don't have to invent a bunch of new practices for a meaningful way to live out our spirituality and social justice politics," says Levy-Lyons. "There is a perfectly good set of ten of them, all ready to go, with as much progressive firepower as any of us can handle, that has existed for some three thousand years."
Download or read book Irresistible written by Andy Stanley and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh look at the earliest Christian movement reveals what made the new faith so compelling...and what we need to change today to make it so again. Once upon a time there was a version of the Christian faith that was practically irresistible. After all, what could be more so than the gospel that Jesus ushered in? Why, then, isn't it the same with Christianity today? Author and pastor Andy Stanley is deeply concerned with the present-day church and its future. He believes that many of the solutions to our issues can be found by investigating our roots. In Irresistible, Andy chronicles what made the early Jesus Movement so compelling, resilient, and irresistible by answering these questions: What did first-century Christians know that we don't—about God's Word, about their lives, about love? What did they do that we're not doing? What makes Christianity so resistible in today's culture? What needs to change in order to repeat the growth our faith had at its beginning? Many people who leave or disparage the faith cite reasons that have less to do with Jesus than with the conduct of his followers. It's time to hit pause and consider the faith modeled by our first-century brothers and sisters who had no official Bible, no status, and little chance of survival. It's time to embrace the version of faith that initiated—against all human odds—a chain of events resulting in the most significant and extensive cultural transformation the world has ever seen. This is a version of Christianity we must remember and re-embrace if we want to be salt and light in an increasingly savorless and dark world.
Book Synopsis Surprised by Meaning by : Alister E. McGrath
Download or read book Surprised by Meaning written by Alister E. McGrath and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in an age when the growth of the Internet has made it easier than ever to gain access to information and accumulate knowledge. But information is not the same as meaning, nor is knowledge identical with wisdom. Many people feel engulfed by a tsunami of facts in which they can find no meaning. In thirteen short, accessible chapters McGrath, author of the bestselling The Dawkins Delusion, leads the reader through a nontechnical discussion of science and faith. How do we make sense of the world around us? Are belief in science and the Christian faith compatible? Does the structure of the universe point toward the existence of God? McGrath's goal is to help readers see that science is neither anathema to faith, nor does it supersede faith. Both science and faith help with the overriding human desire to make sense of things. Faith is a complex idea. It is not a blind leap into the dark but a joyful discovery of a bigger picture of wondrous things of which we are all a part.

Book excerpt: DeVon Franklin, New York Times bestselling author of The Wait and prominent Hollywood producer, reveals that secular and spiritual success are not opposites. Are you anxious to break free of the “beware mentality” that has kept generations of well-meaning people living beneath the fullness of their calling? You’re unfulfilled because you’ve been convinced that you would lose your faith if you pursued the secular ambitions God has put in your heart. However, until you pursue those ambitions you will miss out on the fullness of God and the success you were created to have. For too long there’s been a line drawn between the spiritual and the secular, and we have been conditioned to believe that if we cross this line in either direction, we will have gone too far. It’s time to break down this barrier so you are free to go further than any believer has gone before. The Success Commandments combines spiritual teachings with secular strategies to help you achieve unprecedented success and live the life you were destined to live.
Download or read book The Heart of Love written by Ted Rivera and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A marvel of succinctness, this presentation is one of the best I have seen for initial direction in the faith once delivered to the Fathers.” —Dr. Paige Patterson Ted Rivera unpacks the mystery of God’s will with a simple yet profound look at what Jesus called the two greatest commandments: loving God and loving others. Filled with examples drawn from everyday life, Rivera’s book is practical and wise, a welcome primer for any student of the Bible wanting to deepen their understanding of how to follow Jesus rightly. In the end, Rivera concludes, Jesus isn’t looking merely for consistency in obedience but for obedience in love. Indeed, all our good deeds “are utterly worthless if they are disconnected from a heart that beats not only with love for our God, but also with love for our fellow human beings.” The Heart of Love urges readers toward a deepened faith and a greater imitation of the God who is love.
Book Synopsis Ten Commandments by : Arthur W. Pink
Download or read book Ten Commandments written by Arthur W. Pink and published by Sovereign Grace Publishers,. This book was released on 2007 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today is a day of lawlessness. The spirit of our times is one of unbounded "freedom," one of casting off all restraints, despising all authority. Since God Himself is no longer feared by the majority, many no longer respect the God-ordained authority of governments, parents, church leaders, and educators. Because of abounding iniquity on every hand, the love of many professing Christians for their God and His Law has grown cold, just as Christ prophesied (Matthew 24:12) . Yet we see in Holy Scripture that the only true freedom is freedom from sin. Concerning the purpose of Christ's coming into the world, God's angel Gabriel said to Joseph, "And thou shalt call His name JESUS (that is, `JEHOVAH is Savior'): for He shall save His people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21) . The Lord Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32) . Free from what? Free from sin! Jesus Christ Himself is the Truth, and to know Him is to be free both from the power of reigning sin and from sin's soul-destroying consequences, not simply in the world to come but in this present life as well. The Lord Jesus Himself was well acquainted with the supreme joy of the Godward life of obedience to God's Law and freedom from sin. During His earthly walk, He was a Lawkeeper par excellence. To think, that the Second Person of the holy Trinity, Jehovah the eternal Word, the Lawgiver of Israel, was "made of a woman, made under the Law" (Galatians 4:4) for our redemption! Think on this: the salvation that has been freely given to you, simply by your having trusted in Christ's blood and righteousness, was procured by Him, your substitute, at the highest possible cost. The salvation that is ''all of grace'' to you was earned, ''all of works, '' by your Savior! And yet He obeyed every commandment with the purest delight, saying, ''My meat (food) is to do the will of Him that sent Me, and to finish His work'' (John 4:34). Christ could say in the words of Job (23:12), yet with far greater truthfulness, ''Neither have I gone back from the commandment of His lips; I have esteemed the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.'' Mr. Pink's exposition of God's Moral Law is not exhaustive, for that is impossible. The Psalmist says, ''I have seen the end of all perfection: but Thy commandment is exceeding broad'' (Psalm 119:96). Nevertheless, Mr. Pink gets o the root of man's need. He ably demonstrates the way in which God's Spirit uses the Law: (1) in bringing men to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ (by bringing them to the end of themselves); and (2) in producing in them an increasing ''family resemblance, '' a holy likeness to their Father in heaven (which is the fruit of true saving faith). If you will read this book prayerfully, then God will graciously enable you to cry out with the Psalmist, ''O how love I Thy law! It is my meditation all the day'' (Psalm 119:97). Pink (1890-1953) was a Baptist Preacher in England, Australia, and the United States. He is most famous for his book The Sovereignty of God. After its advent, he, assisted by his editor Mr. I. Herendeen, launched his yearly publication, Studies in the Scriptures in 1921. These continued until his death, totaling altogether 33 volumes of 288 pp. each. Most of Pink=s books are taken from these yearly volumes (written monthly in 24 page format).

Download or read book Surprised by the Power of the Spirit written by Zondervan, and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2010-08-10 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What caused a former Dallas Seminary professor to believe that the miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit are being given today? What convinced someone skeptical about miracles that God still speaks and heals? A dramatic change took place in Jack Deere’s life when he took a fresh look at the Scriptures. He discovered that his cherished arguments against miraculous gifts were based more on prejudice and a lack of personal experience than on the Bible. As soon as Deere became a seeker instead of a skeptic, the Holy Spirit revealed himself in new and surprising ways. In Surprised by the Power of the Spirit, Jack Deere provides a strong biblical defense for the Spirit’s speaking and healing ministries today. He also describes several reliable cases of people who were miraculously healed or who heard God speak in an unmistakable way. Finally, he gives sound advice for using spiritual gifts in the church. Written in popular style-with the care of a scholar but the passion of personal experience-this book is a vital resource for people on both sides of the debate about miraculous gifts.
