Book excerpt: Nusans don’t cause trouble. Peter is a good Nusan. Single, annoyed with his best friend’s constant blind dates, and comfortably provided for with his job as a genmod technician, he spends his days telling expectant parents what their unborn children will look like. For a fee, he can modify physical and mental traits. To ensure Nusa’s perfect society, however, it is law that all babies must be born with white skin, an IQ 120 or above, and without any illnesses or disabilities. These modifications are free of charge. It’s the law. And good Nusans obey the law. The people of Susa, however, are known to be troublemakers. Thank goodness the dark-skinned Susans all live south of the border, in Susa. The closest Peter ever has to come to a dangerous Susan is either on the silver screen being vanquished by a heroic Nusan hero or on the news as deporters -- the force charged to keep Nusa safe -- prepare to send them south to Susa. That is, until a dark-skinned visitor is suddenly inside the four walls of Peter’s quiet existence. Snarky. Irreverent and without any regard for the rules, the stranger should be a Susan but is he? Why is he claiming to have fallen from the stars? Everything Peter knows is suddenly in question and even his status as a good Nusan is under threat as deporters seek him out on suspicion of a capital crime. Has Peter caused trouble? Life as Peter has known it is fragile. Can he survive long enough to learn the truth? And will he even want to believe it once he finds it? Get your copy today and find out!

Book excerpt: The concept of rescuing humans in man-made or natural disasters is marked with risk, and demands commitment, training, accuracy, timeliness and deliverance. The vision, scope and goals of RESCUE 1122 as life saving organization are all well-tethered into its organizational structure, training, resources and operational practices [R1]. However, the fast evolving dynamics of Pakistani society as in urbanization and its parallel rural co-exist have an interplay with ever increasing mandate of RESCUE 1122 to cover a wider ambit of activities. This confluence gives rise to a a new spectrum of problems ranging from traffic congestion in cities to a inertial nonacceptance in rural settings. Such retarding factors to RESCUE 1122 services undermine the operational preparedness and efficiency of the organization. The observership was undertaken with an avid focus on the technological aspects of RESCUE 1122 to identify areas where the technology could be optimized as such or if need be, a new suite of IT-solutions could be suggested to address emerging issues. This consolidated report takes a stepwise approach to understand intra-RESCUE 1122 technology-based departmental activities, the interfacing with external agencies including patients, hospitals, traffic wardens, and service providers such as TPL, IDS, ISPs, PTCL, and other government bodies. It then identifies the obvious and non-obvious ineptness through the personal exposure of the observer in rescue missions and through the feedback received from the staff. As the most important and final step, concrete recommendations are made which serve in two ways; a) to address the shortcomings of the operational areas in order to meet desired goals in a better way, and b) to augment altogether new dimensions to the services which compliment the existing ones. Extraneous to the purview, but highly relevant problems of national significance including terrorism and sabotage and power crisis are also taken into broader consideration to make the report adept to incumbent and more strategic national needs.

Book excerpt: How the creative abundance of today's media culture was made possible by the decline of elitism in the arts and the rise of digital media. Media culture today encompasses a universe of forms—websites, video games, blogs, books, films, television and radio programs, magazines, and more—and a multitude of practices that include making, remixing, sharing, and critiquing. This multiplicity is so vast that it cannot be comprehended as a whole. In this book, Jay David Bolter traces the roots of our media multiverse to two developments in the second half of the twentieth century: the decline of elite art and the rise of digital media. Bolter explains that we no longer have a collective belief in “Culture with a capital C.” The hierarchies that ranked, for example, classical music as more important than pop, literary novels as more worthy than comic books, and television and movies as unserious have broken down. The art formerly known as high takes its place in the media plenitude. The elite culture of the twentieth century has left its mark on our current media landscape in the form of what Bolter calls “popular modernism.” Meanwhile, new forms of digital media have emerged and magnified these changes, offering new platforms for communication and expression. Bolter outlines a series of dichotomies that characterize our current media culture: catharsis and flow, the continuous rhythm of digital experience; remix (fueled by the internet's vast resources for sampling and mixing) and originality; history (not replayable) and simulation (endlessly replayable); and social media and coherent politics.

There, in the presence of her inscrutable future husband, Ophelia slowly realizes that she is a pawn in a political game that will have far-reaching ramifications not only for her but for her entire world. Book excerpt: Some ten thousand years ago, Earth was visited by beings from another planet in the Barnard’s Star system. The Babylonians recorded that beings they called the Oannes were amphibious creatures who came to Earth for the welfare of the human race. The historian Hellandus describes them as having fishlike features but the head, feet, and arms of a man. They instructed humans in everything a civilized nation should know. They built a city beneath Antarctica near the Davis Sea and have lived there peacefully and secretly ever since. But now a rogue Dwarf Star called Zarama threatens the very existence of both Earth and the home planet, Nazmos. Their mythology predicts that a being from another planet will avert disaster. Enter Ashley Bonner into this scenario. He has been granted special gifts, and the Oannes think he may be the predicted one. Can Ashley really prevail against a star a third more massive than the sun? This is the story of Ashley’s development to manhood from age four to seventy and his ultimate sacrifice to save both worlds. —C. J. Harvey
