This book was released on 1999-04-19 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The small neck of the aneurysm afforded an easy surgical attack. An ordinary flat silver clip was placed over the sac and tightly compressed obliterated it completely. The clip was flush with the wall of the carotid artery. The sac, lateral to the silver clip, was then picked up with the forceps and thrombosed by the electocautery. Walter Dandy reporting his successful operation of a posterior communicating aneurysm on March 23, 1937. Walter Dandy's patient left the hospital in good health 2 weeks later, and from his report one may gain the impression that the operation was an easy task. Despite continuous developments during the following decades, it was not until the introduction of the operating microscope and microsurgical techniques that surgical treatment was generally accepted. During the microsurgical era surgical results have continued to improve due to diagnostical, neuroanaesthesi ological, and microsurgical refinements, and improved neurointensive care. Endovascular obliteration has become an important treatment alternative but this has not been included in this particular volume. The purpose of the present supplement of the ACTA NEUROCHIRURGICA is to review some of the elements in the neurosurgical management of patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage that are important for a successful outcome. Professor Helge Nornes has been a major force in the development of new techniques and research strategies in this area for a number of years and has recently retired from the National Hospital in Oslo.

Book excerpt: This volume provides an overview of new concepts in neurovascular interventions based on clinical and scientific knowledge of cerebrovascular disorders. It especially focuses on subarachnoid hemorrhage and cerebrovascular malformations, e.g. aneurysms, arterio-venous malformations, and cavernomas. A separate part addresses cerebral revascularization for both complex aneurysms and ischemia. All contributions were written by recognized experts and cover original papers presented at the 7th European Japanese Stroke Surgery Conference, held in Verona, Italy in June 2014. The authors present new trends and strategies for managing emerging problems, as well as in-depth discussions on controversial issues in the field.

It also covers complication management and post-operative follow-up care. The book is divided in to three parts; the first part discusses common approaches in neurovascular surgery, describing the steps, indications for and limitations of the approach, as well as the associated complications and how to avoid them. The second part addresses surgical treatment based on pathology, taking the different locations of lesions into consideration. The third part focuses on the technological developments that support neurovascular surgery, which may not be available everywhere, but have been included to help vascular surgeon understand the principles. This book is a guide for young neurosurgeons, neurosurgery residents and neurosurgery fellows, as well as for medical students and nurses who are interested in neurosurgery or are associated with this field in any way. It is also a useful teaching aid for senior neurosurgeons.

While open microvascular technique has dominated Western surgical practice, surgeons in the former USSR have developed endovascular techniques that have gained acceptance among surgeons here. This text demonstrates both surgical and endovascular approaches, written and illustrated by surgeons with vast experience in both, in a comparative context. The work is extensively illustrated with full-color surgical illustrations, line drawings, and radiographs.

Book excerpt: This encyclopedic reference book on the treatment of intracranial aneurysms offers a case-based approach to the subject that has the benefit of fully reflecting the highly individual technical and clinical challenges encountered in aneurysm patients. The book is structured by aneurysm location, ensuring ease of use. Readers will find solutions for most clinical situations that they may encounter. Different treatment strategies are described, highlighting their respective pros and cons in particular circumstances. The coverage encompasses both basic techniques, such as coil occlusion and parent vessel occlusion, and the latest developments, including extra- and intrasaccular flow diversion, intrasaccular flow disruption, bifurcation stenting, and hybrid procedures combining microsurgical and endovascular elements. Potential procedural complications are identified, and bail-out strategies to anticipate, avoid, and solve major issues are described. The authors are all respected experts in the field, and the book will be of value to vascular and endovascular neurosurgeons, interventional neuroradiologists and neurologists, stroke neurologists, and other practitioners at all levels of experience.

This is a completely revised and updated sixth edition of the highly respected standard for stroke diagnosis and treatment. Dr James Toole has stayed on as a consultant for the text, and Drs E. Steve Roach, Kerstin Bettermann, and Jose Biller have reworked Dr Toole's book to include chapters on genetics, pregnancy-related stroke, and acute treatments. The practical focus of the book has not changed, retaining its emphasis on bedside diagnosis and treatment. Easily accessible both for stroke specialists and residents, the sixth edition has been modernized to keep pace with the rapid expansion of knowledge in stroke care and includes evidence-based recommendations, the latest technology and imaging, and risk factors. The text is supplemented with more than 200 images, many in color.

Book excerpt: Endovascular intervention - using medication and devices introduced through catheters or microcatheters placed into the blood vessels through a percutaneous approach - has emerged as a relatively new minimally invasive approach to treat cerebrovascular disease and possibly intracranial neoplasms. This textbook provides a comprehensive review of principles pertinent to endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular diseases and intracranial tumors, with a detailed description of techniques for these procedures and periprocedural management strategies. Particular emphasis is placed on expert interpretation of the quality of evidence provided and implications for practice related to endovascular procedures. This will be essential reading for clinicians working in interventional neurology and cardiology, endovascular neurosurgery, vascular surgery and neuroradiology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No special field of surgery dealing with the cranial nerves exists today. This is not surprising in view of the characteristics of this group of morphologically and topo graphically heterogenous nerves. Morphologically we must differentiate between central nerves (I, II and VIII) and the so-called peripheral nerves (nn. III to VII and IX to XII), in which post-lesion rgeneration is quite different. Anatomo-topographi cally we must consider an intracranial and an extracranial part of each cranial nerve. For practical reasons at operation, further subdivisions of the intracranial course of cranial nerves are to be distinguished in the anterior, middle and posterior cranial fossae as well as within the petrous bone. This underscores the extensive tasks awaiting surgeons operating in the ventral part of the brain and facial skull as well as in the more dorsal part of the skull and neck. This very wide field cannot be covered by a single surgical discipline alone. In our opinion, considerable progress has been made in surgery of the cranial nerves only in recent years. This may be explained by the increased mastery of microsurgical techniques by all surgeons in terested in the surgery of the base of the skull as well as with the initiation of more interdisciplinary consultation and jointly performed operations. Possibilities of fu ture development can be discerned in the text. The base of the skull separating the extra-and intracranial part of cranial nerves should not be a barrier but a connect ing link.
