Book Synopsis Geology of the Continental Margin of Eastern Canada by : M. J. Keen
Download or read book Geology of the Continental Margin of Eastern Canada written by M. J. Keen and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 878 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continental margin of eastern Canada extends from Georges Bank at 41 degrees North to Nares Strait at 80 degrees North, almost half the distance from the Pole the equator. It is a classical example of a passive or 'Atlantic" type of continental margin with a geological history reflecting at least two 'Wilson Cycles". The first gave birth to the Iapetus Ocean, and the second to the modern Atlantic and its neighbors. The margin ties the glacial history of the Canadian landmass to the adjacent ocean basins, and so to the world's oceans. Two of the basins offshore eastern Canada, the Jeanne d'Arc Basin off Newfoundland and the Scotian Basin off Nova Scotia, contain substantial resources of oil and gas. An understanding of the geology of the margin bears directly on the evolution of the whole of the North Atlantic and the Arctic, and on the generation of hydrocarbons.

Book Synopsis Continental Shelves of the World by : F.L. Chiocci
Download or read book Continental Shelves of the World written by F.L. Chiocci and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's continental shelves are the sites of vast resources of food, energy and minerals, the exploitation of which is continuously increasing. Fluctuating global sea levels throughout the Quaternary period produced multiple transgressive and regressive cycles that profoundly affected and shaped these shelves. The complex interactions among climate, sea level, tectonics, oceanography and sediment input have formed distinctive sediment packages on each shelf and provide a guide to the interpretation of older shelf sequences throughout the geological record. This Memoir compiles studies on 23 selected shelves from all the continents, focusing on their evolution and examining the patterns of sedimentation during the past approximately 125 000 years. In addition to providing basic background information for each area, the chapters consider specific aspects of continental shelf research, from seismic stratigraphy to geomorphology, from palaeoceanography to palaeo sea-level reconstruction and from palaeontology to geochemistry.

Book Synopsis Quaternary Glaciations - Extent and Chronology by : J. Ehlers
Download or read book Quaternary Glaciations - Extent and Chronology written by J. Ehlers and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-10-02 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the second of three volumes in which the recent knowledge of the extent and chronology of Quaternary glaciations has been compiled on a global scale. This information is seen as a fundamental requirement, not only for the glacial community, but for the wider user-community of general Quaternary workers. In particular the need for accurate ice-front positions is a basic requirement for the rapidly growing field of palaeoclimate modelling. In order to provide the information for the widest-possible range of users in the most accessible form, a series of digital maps was prepared. The glacial limits were mapped in ArcView, the Geographical Information System (GIS) used by the work group. Included with the publication is a CD with digital maps, showing glacial limits, end moraines, ice-dammed lakes, glacier-induced drainage diversions and the locations of key sections through which the glacial limits are defined and dated. The last deglaciation is also shown in 500 year time-steps. The digital maps in this volume cover the USA and Canada and include Greenland and Hawaii. Both overview maps and more detailed maps at a scale 1: 1,000,000 are provided. Also available:Part I: Europe, ISBN 0-444-51462-7Part III: South America, Asia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica, ISBN 0-444-51593-3
