Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to discuss the current status of research and development of boron-rich solids as sensors, ultra-high temperature ceramics, thermoelectrics, and armor. Novel biological and chemical sensors made of stiff and light-weight boron-rich solids are very exciting and efficient for applications in medical diagnoses, environmental surveillance and the detection of pathogen and biological/chemical terrorism agents. Ultra-high temperature ceramic composites exhibit excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance for hypersonic vehicle applications. Boron-rich solids are also promising candidates for high-temperature thermoelectric conversion. Armor is another very important application of boron-rich solids, since most of them exhibit very high hardness, which makes them perfect candidates with high resistance to ballistic impact. The following topical areas are presented: •Boron-rich solids: science and technology •Synthesis and sintering strategies of boron rich solids •Microcantilever sensors •Screening of the possible boron-based thermoelectric conversion materials; •Ultra-high temperature ZrB2 and HfB2 based composites •Magnetic, transport and high-pressure properties of boron-rich solids •Restrictions of the sensor dimensions for chemical detection •Armor

Book excerpt: The second edition of Materials Degradation and Its Control by Surface Engineering continues the theme of the first edition, where discussions on corrosion, wear, fatigue and thermal damage are balanced by similarly detailed discussions on their control methods, e.g. painting and metallic coatings. The book is written for the non-specialist, with an emphasis on introducing technical concepts graphically rather than through algebraic equations. In the second edition, the graphic content is enhanced by an additional series of colour and monochrome photographs that illustrate key aspects of the controlling physical phenomena. Existing topics such as liquid metal corrosion have been extended and new topics such as corrosion inhibitors added.

Book excerpt: This book provides final year undergraduate students, graduate students, research scientists and engineers with an up-to-date overview of the power of using surface analytical techniques for probing complex solid surfaces and lubricants as well as for understanding their interactions in tribological systems. The first three introductory chapters illustrate the need for surface analysis in tribology and the essentials of the analytical techniques. Following these, eight chapters on applications give insight into the contribution of the major analytical techniques to tribology. These chapters are divided into three groups. The first group deals with the applications of surface analytical techniques to the study of the adhesion, friction, deformation, wear, structure and chemistry of solid surfaces at the atomic scale or in well-defined conditions. The second group focuses mainly on solid lubricants and tribological surface modifications. Lastly, the third group covers liquid lubricants in molecularly thin-film lubrication and in boundary lubrication and their interactions with surfaces.

It presents a collection of selected research articles and reviews providing up-to-date information related to stoichiometry at various levels. Being materials science an interdisciplinary area, the book has been divided in multiple sections, each for a specific field of applications. The first two sections introduce the role of stoichiometry in nanotechnology and defect chemistry, providing examples of state-of-the-art technologies. Section three and four are focused on intermetallic compounds and metal oxides. Section five describes the importance of stoichiometry in electrochemical applications. In section six new strategies for solid phase synthesis are reported, while a cross sectional approach to the influence of stoichiometry in energy production is the topic of the last section. Though specifically addressed to readers with a background in physical science, I believe this book will be of interest to researchers working in materials science, engineering and technology.

Book excerpt: Combustion agents for solid fuel propellants and explosives have gained widespread interest in recent years. Their high gravimetric heat of combustion enhances the performance of modern energetic materials. Borohydride compounds have proved to be excellent candidates in this application. High-energy Combustion Agents of Borohydrides covers the most recent developments in the advanced combustion agents of borohydrides. Experimental studies covering the synthesis and characterisation of borohydrides are examined, as well as the interactions between borohydride and propellant ingredients. The properties of BHN/nano Al composites are discussed, as is the effect of borohydrides on the properties of fuel-rich solid propellants. The book concludes with a summary of the prospective development of high-energy combustion agents in solid propellants and explosives, and looks into the future development of military applications. Authored by renowned experts in the field, this book will appeal to researchers in academia and industry seeking a better understanding of how to improve the ignition and combustion performance of propellants and explosives.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of ion beams for the modification of the structure and properties of the near-surface region of ceramics began in earnest in the early 19805. Since the mechanical properties of such materials are dominated by surface flaws and the surface stress state, the use of surface modification tech niques would appear to be an obvious application. As is often the case in research and development, most of the initial studies can be characterized as cataloging the response of various ceramic materials to a range of ion beam treatments. The systematic study of material and ion beam parameters is well underway and we are now designing experiments to provide specific information about the processing parameter - structure-property rela tionships. This NATO-Advanced Study Institute was convened in order to assess our current state of knowledge in this field, to identify opportunities and needs for further research, and to identify the potential of such processes for technological application. It became apparent that this class of inorganic compounds, loosely termed ceramics, presents many challenges to the understanding of ion-solid inter actions, the relationships among ion-beam parameters, materials parameters, and the resulting structures, as well as relationships between structure and properties. In many instances, this understanding will represent a major extension of that learned from the study of metals and semiconductors.
