Book Synopsis Surface Perception from Local Analysis of Texture and Contour by : Kent A. Stevens
Download or read book Surface Perception from Local Analysis of Texture and Contour written by Kent A. Stevens and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The visual analysis of surface shape from texture and surface contour is treated within a computational framework. The aim of this study is to determine valid constraints that are sufficient to allow surface orientation and distance (up to a multiplicative constant) to be computed from the image of surface texture and of surface contours. The report is in three parts. Part I consists of a review of major theories of surface perception, a discussion of vision as computation and of the nature in which three-dimensional information is manifest in the image, and a study of the representation of local surface orientation. Part II reconisiders the familiar 'texture gradient'. Part III examines our preception of surface contours. It is shown that surface contours are strong sources of information about local surface shape.

Download or read book Vision written by David Marr and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2010-07-09 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available again, an influential book that offers a framework for understanding visual perception and considers fundamental questions about the brain and its functions. David Marr's posthumously published Vision (1982) influenced a generation of brain and cognitive scientists, inspiring many to enter the field. In Vision, Marr describes a general framework for understanding visual perception and touches on broader questions about how the brain and its functions can be studied and understood. Researchers from a range of brain and cognitive sciences have long valued Marr's creativity, intellectual power, and ability to integrate insights and data from neuroscience, psychology, and computation. This MIT Press edition makes Marr's influential work available to a new generation of students and scientists. In Marr's framework, the process of vision constructs a set of representations, starting from a description of the input image and culminating with a description of three-dimensional objects in the surrounding environment. A central theme, and one that has had far-reaching influence in both neuroscience and cognitive science, is the notion of different levels of analysis—in Marr's framework, the computational level, the algorithmic level, and the hardware implementation level. Now, thirty years later, the main problems that occupied Marr remain fundamental open problems in the study of perception. Vision provides inspiration for the continuing efforts to integrate knowledge from cognition and computation to understand vision and the brain.
Book Synopsis Readings in Computer Vision by : Martin A. Fischler
Download or read book Readings in Computer Vision written by Martin A. Fischler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 815 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of computer vision combines techniques from physics, mathematics, psychology, artificial intelligence, and computer science to examine how machines might construct meaningful descriptions of their surrounding environment. The editors of this volume, prominent researchers and leaders of the SRI International AI Center Perception Group, have selected sixty papers, most published since 1980, with the viewpoint that computer vision is concerned with solving seven basic problems: Reconstructing 3D scenes from 2D images Decomposing images into their component parts Recognizing and assigning labels to scene objects Deducing and describing relations among scene objects Determining the nature of computer architectures that can support the visual function Representing abstractions in the world of computer memory Matching stored descriptions to image representation Each chapter of this volume addresses one of these problems through an introductory discussion, which identifies major ideas and summarizes approaches, and through reprints of key research papers. Two appendices on crucial assumptions in image interpretation and on parallel architectures for vision applications, a glossary of technical terms, and a comprehensive bibliography and index complete the volume.

Book excerpt: Image Modeling compiles papers presented at a workshop on image modeling in Rosemont, Illinois on August 6-7, 1979. This book discusses the mosaic models for textures, image segmentation as an estimation problem, and comparative analysis of line-drawing modeling schemes. The statistical models for the image restoration problem, use of Markov random fields as models of texture, and mathematical models of graphics are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the univariate and multivariate random field models for images, stochastic image models generated by random tessellations of the plane, and long crested wave models. Other topics include the Boolean model and random sets, structural basis for image description, and structure in co-occurrence matrices for texture analysis. This publication is useful to specialists and professionals working in the field of image processing.
