Book excerpt: Dynamic nanoindentation characterization techniques were designed to measure the storage modulus and loss modulus of compliant viscoelastic substrate surfaces. The results of these experiments were compared with modulus data obtained by conventional dynamic mechanical spectroscopy. Nanoscratch testing methods were also developed that qualitatively compared the abrasion resistance of surface-modified substrates.

Various conditions were also investigated to develop methods for incorporating therapeutic agents into modified device surfaces. The drugs studied included ofloxacin, an antimicrobial agent, and dexamethasone, an anti-inflammatory agent. Loading and release of these drugs into PBS and human blood plasma were examined by UV-Vis and HPLC. In summary, new coating systems and practical process procedures were developed to enhance the coating stability on 316L stainless steel surfaces and to effectively deliver therapeutic agents.

Book excerpt: This Special Issue focuses on the synthesis and characterization of hydrogels specifically used as carriers of biological molecules for pharmaceutical and biomedical employments. Pharmaceutical applications of hydrophilic materials has emerged as one of the most significant trends in the area of nanotechnology. To propose some of the latest findings in this field, each contribution involves an in-depth analysis including different starting materials and their physico-chemical and biological properties with the aim of synthetizing high-performing devices for specific use. In this context, intelligent polymeric devices able to be morphologically modified in response to an internal or external stimulus, such as pH or temperature, have been actively pursued. In general, hydrophilic polymeric materials lead to high in vitro and/or in vivo therapeutic efficacy, with programmed site-specific feature showing remarkable potential for targeted therapy. This Special Issue serves to highlight and capture the contemporary progress in this field. Calcium phosphate ceramics and need for titanium surface modification are detailed in the initial chapters. Surface modification techniques include plasma spraying, sol-gel, biomimetic, electrochemical, laser, sputtering and ion-implantation methods. Chapters 5 to 19 deal with these modification techniques. Chapters 20-22 deal with less-common methods titanium nitride coating, protein modification, diamond like carbon coating and ultraviolet treatment. Substituting the apatite lattice with other cations like silicon, magnesium, sodium, carbon, etc is provided. The chapters involving these techniques begin with a small introduction about that technique and go on to explain the underlying principles, methodology and properties of the coats. According to the authors, the book gives a complete overview of almost all the surface modification techniques known, as applied to titanium biomaterials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the functionalisation of silicone surfaces with polysaccharides to improve their antimicrobial and antifouling properties, thus reducing the implant-related infections. The authors describe how silicone surfaces were chosen because silicone exhibits excellent biocompatible properties and is already being used for medical implants such as catheters, breast implants, prosthetics etc. The potential of polysaccharides such as cellulose, chitosan, hyaluronic acid, and other natural substances such as natural surfactants as coatings for silicones are also discussed, their effects are evaluated. With the aging of the population, the number of medical implants is growing and with it the number of infections associated with the use of implants.

Book excerpt: This new book synthesizes a wide range of interdisciplinary literature to provide the state-of-the art of biomedical implants. It discusses materials and explains the three basic requirements for implant success from a surface engineering perspective: biological compatibility, biomechanical compatibility, morphological compatibility. Biomedical, mechanical, and materials engineers will find this book indispensable for understanding proper treatment of implant surfaces in order to achieve clinical success. Highlights include: • Coverage of surface engineering of polymer, metallic, ceramic and composite implant materials; • Coverage of chemical, mechanical, physical, thermal, and combined surface modification technologies; • Explanations of interfacial reaction between vital tissue and non-vital implant surface; and • Methodologies and technologies for modification of surface layer/zone to promote the osteo-integration, the ultimate success for biomedical implants in both dental and medical practice.

Book excerpt: Active implants are actually drug or protein-eluting implants that induce healing effects, in addition to their regular task, such as support. This effect is achieved by controlled release of the active agent to the surrounding tissue. This book will give a broad overview of biomaterial platforms used as basic elements of drug-eluting implants. It will include mainly coatings for vascular stents with controlled release of antiproliferative agents, wound dressings with controlled release of antibacterial agents, drug-eluting vascular grafts, protein-eluting scaffolds for tissue regeneration, drug-eluting platforms for dental and other applications. Thus, both internal and external implants are described. The drug-eluting implants will be described in terms of matrix formats and polymers, incorporated drugs and their release profiles from the implants, as well as implant functioning. Smart polymeric systems, such as crosslinked poly-lactones, thermo and pH-sensitive hydrogels and poly(amido-amines), as well as novel basic structural elements, such as composite fibers and films, and nanostructures will be thoroughly described. The effect of the processing parameters on the microstructure and on the resulting drug release profiles, mechanical and physical properties, and other relevant properties, will be emphasized. The described new biomaterials approaches for active implants enhance the tools available for creating clinically important biomedical applications.
