Book excerpt: This paper is a summary of various methods that are important for studying the stability of interfaces in solar energy materials and for studying the interfaces themselves. An overview is given that explains why interfaces are crucially important for developing long-life, cost-effective, multilayer, polycrystalline, thin-film stacks for solar energy conversion systems (SECS). Second, broad categories of characterization methods, approaches, and processes in interface science are reviewed and related to studies required for components in SECS, in which the importance of compositional analysis of interfaces is emphasezed. Third, an overview is given of the solar-related research needs in various topical areas in interface science. A brief review is given concerning the current status of interfacial characterization.

Book excerpt: Environmental problems derived from the massive use of conventional energy resources are one of the main issues that our society has been facing in recent decades. Renewable energies (and particularly solar energy) have become a highly competitive means to meet the world’s increasing energy demands in a sustainable and clean manner. One of the key research challenges for the commercial deployment of several solar energy technologies is focused on the development of feasible and durable coatings that withstand appropriate optical and thermal performance over the lifetime of the solar facilities. This book addresses a number of relevant aspects related to coatings for renewable energies, including a deep survey of coatings used in photovoltaic solar energy, the development of a superhydrophobic and thermal stable silica coating that is potentially suitable for various industrial applications related to renewable technologies, the development of coatings to improve the resistance of structural materials used in concentrating solar thermal technologies with molten salts, and several research works related to solar reflectors for concentrating solar thermal technologies (such us the advanced analysis of the corrosion, the suitability of anti-soiling coatings, and the development of top protective coatings for high-temperature secondary concentrators).

Book excerpt: Thin film devices for energy conversion have become a vital area of research to achieve high performance with low cost. As the surface-to-volume ratio becomes significant, the fundamental physics of the surface and interface microstructures and the reaction mechanisms are important to developing such energy devices or processes. My Ph.D. research is thus focus on surface and interface characterization of energy materials for thin film devices with engineered components fabricated by novel technologies. The first part of this dissertation discusses how surface microstructures influence fuel cell performance. According to the high resolution characterization of surface grain boundaries in solid oxide ion conductors, oxygen vacancy segregation at grain boundaries was observed, indicating that the grain boundaries can be more active sites for oxygen incorporation into the electrolyte. This preferred surface reaction at grain boundaries was verified by AC impedance spectroscopy. In addition, using atomic force microscopy, the local rearrangement of charged species on the oxide surface was investigated as a function of time and temperature to quantitatively analyze the diffusivity of oxygen vacancies on the surface. The second part discusses investigation of quantum confined structures that was aimed at contributing to the development of new solar cell architectures. The electronic properties of quantum confined structures, fabricated by atomic layer deposition (ALD), were characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy. In particular, the band gap of lead sulfide quantum well was tuned as a function of well thickness and potential barrier height. In addition, various nano-patterning techniques were developed to fabricate higher-order quantum confined structures, including area-selective ALD.

Book excerpt: Currently, the reliance on fossil fuels raises concerns on the increasing global energy demand, the rapid anthropogenic climate changes and growing environmental problems. The grand challenge is to search for viable carbon-neutral sources of renewable energy. Nanomaterials are arguably the base that integrates nanotechnology, information technology, and biotechnology; the major drivers of technological development today. Over the past decades, the understanding of form-function relations surrounding nanomaterials has significantly brightened the prospects of the transition from fossil fuels to solar fuels. This book introduces the latest developments in nanomaterials aimed at the applications in clean energy areas. It overviews the close link between nanomaterials development and energy applications from the experience and perspective of the authors. It discusses the bottom-up synthesis and interface engineering of new materials of different dimensions and describes their applications in future energy devices such as secondary batteries, novel solar cells, luminescent devices, and water splitting electrolyzers. .

Book excerpt: Written by scientists from leading institutes in Germany, USA and Spain who use these techniques as the core of their scientific work and who have a precise idea of what is relevant for photovoltaic devices, this text contains concise and comprehensive lecture-like chapters on specific research methods. They focus on emerging, specialized techniques that are new to the field of photovoltaics yet have a proven relevance. However, since new methods need to be judged according to their implications for photovoltaic devices, a clear introductory chapter describes the basic physics of thin-film solar cells and modules, providing a guide to the specific advantages that are offered by each individual method. The choice of subjects is a representative cross-section of those methods enjoying a high degree of visibility in recent scientific literature. Furthermore, they deal with specific device-related topics and include a selection of material and surface/interface analysis methods that have recently proven their relevance. Finally, simulation techniques are presented that are used for ab-initio calculations of relevant semiconductors and for device simulations in 1D and 2D. For students in physics, solid state physicists, materials scientists, PhD students in material sciences, materials institutes, semiconductor physicists, and those working in the semiconductor industry, as well as being suitable as supplementary reading in related courses.

Book excerpt: In the Surface Analysis group, within the National Center for Photovoltaic's Measurements and Characterization Division, we use surface analytical techniques help to determine the chemical, elemental, and molecular composition, and electronic structure of material surfaces and interfaces. The properties of the surface and outer few micrometers of a material often control the electrical, chemical,or mechanical properties of that material--hence, this region is of extreme importance. Our techniques use ions, electrons, and X-ray or ultraviolet photons in high vacuum to probe surfaces and interfaces of a material. We map the elemental and chemical composition of specimens, study impurities and grain boundaries, gather bonding and chemical-state information, measure surface electronicproperties, and perform depth profiles to determine doping and elemental distributions. We have analyzed a wide range of materials, including photovoltaics, microelectronics, polymers, and biological specimens. We work collaboratively with you to solve materials- and device-related R&D problems. This sheet describes our major technique capabilities.
