Book excerpt: This text contains the scientific contributions to the Fourth International Symposium on Sphingolipids, Sphingo lipidoses and Allied Disorders held at the Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center on October 25-27, 1971. These meetings were conducted under the auspices of the Isaac Albert Research Institute of the Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center and the National Tay-Sachs and Allied Diseases Association, Inc. Four symposia, held in 1958, 1961, 1965 and 1971 were designed to gather the most relevant and innovative of the laboratory and field studies concerned with these hereditary disorders. The texts generated by these periodic meetings have mirrored the increasing absorption of the scientific community in the problems of sphingolipid metabolism. The first meeting in 1958 consisted of but twelve pre sentations, the majority emanating from local laboratories. The current sessions contain 48 scientific presentations by scientists from nine countries and demonstrate the increas ingly diversified techniques and approaches employed in the study of these diseases. Many of the authors, in exploring data on the mucopolysaccharidoses and leucodystrophies, as well as the sphingolipidoses, have given recognition to those biochemical areas held in common by these otherwise diverse disease processes. The problems of prevention and therapy of these diseases have been considered by some of the contributors. Laboratory screening procedures designed to detect carriers of the va rious lipidoses are now available and the experiences of some laboratories in this area are summarized within this volume. The prospective identification of heterozygotes may indeed become a powerful adjunct in genetic counseling.

Book excerpt: The International Society for Clinical Electroretinography provides a link between scientists who are enlarging our understanding of the normal functioning of the visual pathway, and clinicians who investigate and treat visual disturbances. The chief function of the Society is to organise symposia, where, with skill born of long practice, the participants obtain the benefits of both social and scientific contact, without detriment to either. The result ing spread of information is documented both in the society's Newsletter, and by the publication of volumes such as this, the record of the 9th Symposium held at Brighton in 1971. This meeting was a joint Symposium of the ISCERG and the International Union of Physiological Sciences. The subjects covered represent merely the interests of the organisers. The biophysical studies are represented by chapters on such divers topics as the x-ray diffraction of receptor membranes and impedance properties of outer limb suspensions. Other papers deal with the problems of maintaining the retina in vitro in a physiological condition. Papers describing techniques for investigating the functional properties of the visual system shade into those which describe new aspects of human disease. In the past such serendipity has been of value as evidenced by compal-ison between this and previous volumes. In 1965 the physiological section of the Proceedings was largely devoted to a new elec trical response, the evoked potential of the visual cortex.

Knuttgen of Biology, Boston University, 2 Cummington Department Street, Boston, 02215 Massachusetts, USA The relationship of the formation of lactate acid to skeletal muscle energy release in exercising humans was first explored by A. V. Hill and co-workers (2l, 22). The term "oxygen debt" was suggested by them to describe the excess oxygen consumption of recovery which they felt was closely related. A combination of their work and the earlier work of Krogh and Lindhard (35) re sulted at that time in the belief that a certain amount of energy release during the transition from rest to exercise was provided by a non-aerobic source, glycolysis. The resulting accumulation of lactic acid (as lactate) in the body required an extra con sumption during recovery for its oxidative removal. Jervell (24) subsequently showed that, in exercise, the greatest accumulation in blood took place during the first few minutes. He felt that the blood lactate increase was due to a shortage of oxygen during the transition period. The observation was also made for the first time that the increased level of lac tate due to exercise could be made to fall faster if mild exercise was employed by the subjects in place of sedentary recovery. The work of Margaria, Edwards and Dill (40) appeared in 1933. They observed that exercise (treadmill running) could be carried on at low levels without significant changes in resting levels of blood lactate.

Book excerpt: The dynamic state of developments within the field of the vasoactive polypeptides is reflected in the continuous series of publications appearing on this topic Thus, the proposal to con o vene another symposium only two years after the 1969 Fiesole Symposium (Plenum Press, 1970) was received enthusiastically and with high expectation. Enthusiasm was based, undoubtedly, in part on meeting together once again in the very pleasant surroundings of Florence with most gracious and enchanting hosts. The 25th International Congress on Physiological Sciences held in Munich the following week also provided the impetus for the organization of this satellite symposium on vasopeptides. However, the accelerated pace of research in the "kinin" field was the major motivating force for the symposium. It was felt necessary to inform each other of the many advances that were taking place in the varied aspects of this specialized but impor tant field o The role of kinins in both physicologic and pathologic processes still remains to be elucidated definitively. Thus, these proceedings contain new and unpublished informa tion on the chemistry, biochemistry, physicology, pharmacology, as well as pathophysiology of vasopeptides. Recent data on &tructure activity relationships of kinin analogues are complemented by a description of radioimmunoassay techniques for kinins, and studies on the site of synthesis of substrates for kinin-forming enzymes.

Book excerpt: The Third International Conference on Lymphatic Tissue and Germinal Centers in Immune Reactions was held at the University of Uppsala in Sweden, September 1-4, 1970. The conference is obliged to Professor K. E. Fichtelius for his initiative in establishing the meeting, as well as for the assistance of his staff at the Department of Histology in organizing the meetings. At the University of Uppsala inquiries into the lymphatic system go back to the 17th century and are marked by milestones, such as Olof Rudbeck's discovery of the thoracic duct in 1651 and August Hammar's fundamental work on the thymus in the beginning of this century. So one is justified to s~ that the conference gathered on historical ground. The organizing committee, naturally, hopes that the achievements presented at the conference will contribute to and provide significant advances in the history of lymphatic research. The material presented in this volume displ~s a great diversity of methods and the ingenuity of different investigators in their experimental designs. It is also apparent that contemporary research on lymphatic tissues or cells no longer recognizes the artificial borderline of morphologic ve~8U8 functional. It has become a multi disciplinary affair in which an increasing number of different specialists are working closely together. Apparently this is one reason why so many new and important discoveries have been made recently.

Yet, learning and education per se rank high in our set of values, from the point of view of both lay people and profes sional workers. For some reason, we fail to detect the illogic inherent in this value system--for, what is research but the learning of new information? Apparently our society associates "learning" only with known, long-gathered information. This symposium, I believe, will generate new information about shock through the integration of knowledge of many investi gators, who have come to share a common meeting ground. Hopefully, the worth of this and similar endeavors will gain the recognition and, more important, the support of the public. In the next decade or so, I believe that shock research workers will be channeling their efforts more and more into investigating the repair of damaged cells. The individual cell and its products must be scrutinized just as carefully as we examine the whole organism or its collections of cells. Shock is an exciting area of research, but it involves years of painstaking work. Moreover, the society which will reap its fruits must be persuaded to share the burden of its support. John A. Book excerpt: This volume represents a portion of the Proceedings of the Sixth International Meeting of the Reticuloendothelial Society. There is little question that the University of Freiburg was a most appropriate choice as the site of the meeting since, in essence, the Society was founded here when Aschoff undertook his classical studies on the macrophage and discovered what may well have been the last remaining biological system. In the approximate fifty years which have elapsed since Aschoff introduced the descriptive term Reticuloendothelial System to unify those cells with the common property of phagocytosis, one finds investigative activity at the highest level in all areas of reticuloendothelial involvement. Indeed, the topics covered in the present volume would of necessity require that the common property of phagocytosis which led to the formulation of the reticuloendothelial system be modified. The common basis at the present is clearly no longer phagocytic expression, but the unifying basis of host defense. The totality of reticuloendothelial involvement in host-defense is clearly reflected by the diverse scientific backgrounds and research interests of the participants of the meeting. Remarkable advances in appreciating the involvement of the RES in maintaining the well-being of the host against a variety of endogenous and exogenous factors have been made since volume I of the Advances in Experimental Biology and Medicine on the reticulo endothelial system was published.

The development of the central nervous system is possibly the most significant aspect of the growth of a mammal from embryo to adulthood. The central nervous system is obviously the main repository not only of the species' inherited functional characteristics but also of the process of individuation. Whatever "engrams" constitute the basis of individual characteristics are laid down mainly in the central nervous system, and especially the brain, during its growth. The chemical aspect of this process IS clearly of great importance and the significance of its study should be self evident. Nevertheless, it is only one aspect of a parel lei series of morphological, physiological, biochemical and psychological events which take place as an integrated process, the final result of which is the transformation of the post-embryonic nervous system into the functioning adult system. It is imperative, therefore, that any study or description of the chemical events during the development of the CNS should be undertaken in ful I awareness of the concomitant morphological, physiological and psychological events. It is only against this multidiscipl inary informational framework that the chemical events during 2 J. FOLCH-PI development can be correctly interpreted and acquire their ful I significance. With this in mind, the introduction to this volume may best serve its purpose by describing briefly the morphological and physiological events that accompany the chemical aspect of development.
