Book excerpt: Surat to San Francisco is the untold hospitality history of the Patel community, from its genesis to its gradual consolidation and expansion. The book chronicles how three founders, illegal farmhands in the San Joaquin farms of California, accidentally established the first hotel for their clan. Their names were Kanji Manchhu Desai, Nanalal Patel, and D. Lal. It was 1942 amid the backdrop of World War II. Desai, Patel, and Lal came across a hotel in Sacramento whereby the Japanese owner was forced to give up the hotel as she was on her way to an internment camp. They leased the 32-room Ford Hotel at firesale terms of $350 down and $75 per month. All three Patels were undocumented as America in the '20s, '30s, and '40s did not allow Indians to immigrate. A few years later, Kanji Desai shifted to the Mission District in San Francisco and leased the Hotel Goldfield. The Hotel Goldfield became the headquarters of new Patels, who came in search of the American dream. Desai welcomed them with open arms, sheltering, feeding, and guiding them. Over his meals of the Gujarati dish of khichdi and kadhi, Desai preached like an evangelist, saying, "There's nothing better here for you. If you are a Patel, lease a hotel." For several Patels, accepting this new line of business was not easy. But they faced racial discrimination trying to find other jobs. California in the 1940s was not as accepting of others' cultures and backgrounds. Eventually, many Patels bought into Desai's words. By 1954, the Desai had helped nearly 30 Patels and other Gujaratis to get into the hotel business. The book has the biographies of other Patel hoteliers and includes many rare photographs from the 1940s and 1950s.

Using multi-colored streetcars, built in the 1940s, 1920s and even earlier, it is a transforming experience that carries the rider back to a more genteel and carefree time, while providing an efficient and pleasant way to get from here to there in a modern era. Its creation has shown the world that public transportation can be exciting, fun, and a source of civic pride. The author, an active participant in the success of the F-Line, has written the book in an upbeat and breezy style, sprinkling anecdotes drawn from his own experiences and those of fellow workers and participants throughout the book. In this way, the book will appeal not only to those who are in, or follow, the transit industry, but also to the average reader, rider, and San Francisco Bay Area resident. Anyone who rides the F-Line will get a much fuller appreciation of this great city. This book has 290 pages with over 500 color and black-and-white photographs.

Book excerpt: In this recounting of medical and human history, Marriott takes us back to Hong Kong in the summer of 1894, when a diagnosis of plague brought two top scientists to the island--Alexandre Yersin, a lone, maverick French bacteriologist, and his eminent rival, the Japanese Shibasaburo Kitasato. Marriott interweaves his narrative of their competition to discover the plague's source with scenes of the scourge's persistence: California in 1900, when plague arrived in the United States; Surat, India, in 1994, where torrential floods drowned millions of rats, causing the worst outbreak in seventy years; and New York City, some time in the future, where there is a rat for every human being, a diminishing budget for pest control, and an emerging strain of plague that is resistant to antibiotics.--From publisher description.

Book excerpt: Buddhists, Hindus, and Sikhs in America explores the challenges that Asian immigrants face when their religion--and consequently culture--is "remade in the U.S.A." Peppered with stories of individual people and how they actually live their religion, this informative book gives an overview of each religion's beliefs, a short history of immigration--and discrimination--for each group, and how immigrants have adapted their religious beliefs since they arrived. Along the way, the roles of men and women, views toward dating and marriage, the relationship to the homeland, the "brain drain" from Asia of scientists, engineers, physicians, and other professionals, and American offshoots of Asian religions, such as the Hare Krishnas and Transcendental Meditation (TM), are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Richard Wright's account of the 1955 Bandung Conference has been key to shaping Afro-Asian historical narratives, Indonesian accounts of Wright and his conference attendance have been largely overlooked. Indonesian Notebook contains myriad documents by Indonesian writers, intellectuals, and reporters, as well as a newly recovered lecture by Wright, previously published only in Indonesian. Brian Russell Roberts and Keith Foulcher introduce and contextualize these documents with extensive background information and analysis, showcasing the heterogeneity of postcolonial modernity and underscoring the need to consider non-English language perspectives in transnational cultural exchanges. This collection of primary sources and scholarly histories is a crucial companion volume to Wright'sThe Color Curtain.

This book describes the sources and methods used in historical urban studies, including an evaluation of the total size estimates, area, institutional factors, and volume of local activity. Illustrations of maps that locate large cities from several time tables and regions of the world are also provided. This text likewise covers the data sheets for ancient cities from 1360 B.C. to 200 B.C. and 100 A.D. to 622 A.D. The data sheets from 800 to 1850 A.D. provide estimates for countries such as Italy, Afghanistan, France, Brazil, India, and Russia. Other topics include the world's largest cities from 430 B.C. to200 B.C., top six cities in each continent from 800 to 1850, and whereabouts of unfamiliar cities not shown on the maps. This publication is a good source for sociologists, historians, and researchers interested in population studies.
