Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive review of the relevant literature on managing conflicts stemming from the quantity and quality problems of water around the world. So far, few comprehensive and interdisciplinary analyses of such international surface water conflicts have been produced. The literature surveyed indicates that while in many areas there has been extensive research and analysis, there continues to be a need for more studies on the specific situations that lead to conflicts over water and other environment resources. Lateral learning, an attempt to understand the similarities between all conflicts over natural resources, will lend itself to future applications in predicting and preventing these conflicts. A survey of internati9nal watersheds provides some bibliographical and general data collected from over 200 transboundary watersheds. A subset of case studies of the exhaustive list of international watersheds is examined in greater detain. A related effort is a compilation and analysis of relevant water treaties, and the rationale for their implementations.

Book excerpt: With one-fifth of the global population, South Asia is the largest democratic region in the world today even though military rule and monarchy still exist in certain countries. Political parties have played an active role in decolonization, freedom struggles and social change in the region and have been responsible for marrying democracy with development and social justice. Yet research shows that 40 per cent of the population in South Asia do not trust political parties, while only 11 per cent of those surveyed express great trust. Political Parties in South Asia: The Challenge of Change provides a comparative view of the conditions, roles and functioning of political parties in five countries of the South Asian region ¡ Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The publication builds on empirical information collected from 49 parties and addresses the challenges of politics as experienced by the key political actors themselves: the political parties. In addition, it includes practical recommendations for reforms in the party domain. By providing comparative information, this International IDEA publication aims to stimulate debate on the challenges faced by political parties in South Asia. It is especially aimed at political parties, scholars, policy makers and democracy assistance organizations working for political reform in South Asia.

Download or read book Mumbai Human Development Report, 2009 written by and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2010 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent surveys on urban agglomerations reveal that more than half the world's population currently lives in cities. It is also estimated that by the year 2030, developing countries will account for 80 per cent of the world's urban population. In India, over 61 million people are urban slum dwellers, nearly 22 per cent of the urban population. As Indian cities continue to grow and expand, they face the challenges of providing infrastructure, housing, water, sanitation, healthcare and education to their citizens. Densely populated, the massive urban conglomerate spread across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is the largest urban conglomerate in India. Mumbai personifies the paradox of extreme wealth and extreme poverty living side by side. It, more than any other Indian city, is a city in transition, looking to the future, attempting to modernize. However, its attempt at modernization must include efforts to improve the quality of life of all its citizens. This report is a step in that direction. It is the first, global city-level human development report that analyses in-depth various issues such as population, education, slums, gender, health, among others, that will aid the city's progress in future. Authored by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, this comprehensive report was prepared under the National Strategy for Urban Poor Project, a joint project of the Government of India and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It will be of interest to administrators and policymakers, civil society organizations, urban planners and researchers, university and institutional libraries, as well as various government ministries and departments, and national and international agencies.
