Book excerpt: Excerpt from Supplementary Reading List for High School English A combination of sources was chosen for this study: namely, state high school manuals, printed syllabi issued by city school systems, and sources of interest in literature as determined by former investigations. The lists in high school manuals represent the practice of the vast num ber of schools that have no prepared lists of their own. The printed lists issued in city school systems represent the work of men and women who are in close contact with the schools and who are experimenting with the selections. By taking into consideration sources of interest in literature as determined by thorough investigators, we may include selections in accord with the native interests of high school pupils of different ages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School English Book One The chapter on Conversations about Books seeks to ih dicate a method for classroom discussions about the books prescribed for the work in literature. The authors believe that reading for pleasure is the chief aim of the literature work, and that the books should therefore be discussed from this point of view. They believe that the class dis eussions should be familiar conversations confined to topics of interest to young people. They would therefore leave the minute analysis of books for style and structure to the fourth high school year or to the college class. Such mi unties, if admitted at all, should be purely incidental. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A List of Books Suited to a High-School Library The list difiers from others of similar character in that it is not compiled from the librarian's point of view, but from that of the departments concerned each contributing those titles which from experience have proved themselves of greatest value. An attempt has been made to select the latest editions, since they will be in print longer; to choose the least expensive works which will give full service, and to select those most attractive to the high-school mind. Thus in some lists textbook editions have been carefully avoided because to many students the appearance of the studied textbook is repellant. Well-illustrated editions have often been listed when the illustrations aid the interest in or the understanding of the text. Often the more expensive editions have been listed because of their great value to the student, though they have seldom been starred. No work has been included which has not seemed of real value to a proportion of the student body. The course of study develops the need of the book. This list is based upon the present curriculum in the University High School. As that curriculum is not vitally different from the course of the majority of high schools, the list may be of general value. The list does not represent a minimum of the books necessary for effective work, neither is it all-inclusive. Rather, it indicates the proportion of a well-stocked, practical library. Its greatest value lies, perhaps, in the fact that it forms a systematized basis for building up a working library vital to the life of the school. The number of titles has been materially increased to include the suggestions of many high-school teachers, specialists in the Bureau of Education, high-school librarians, public librarians, and commission workers. The suggestions and demands of teachers of special departments for comprehensive lists on particular subjects have been somewhat insistent, and the result is that some divisions, notably agriculture, are out of proportion to the rest of the list. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of High School English The teacher of English in the high schools of to-day has varied and manifold duties. To the lessons in literature and written composition, which were the staple diet a decade ago, there must now be added persistent instruction in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and oral composition, all duly planned and graded for the secondary school. Furthermore, every well-ordered course in English must include some provision for dramatic effort in the classroom if the work in oral expression is to be given its full value. The present volume contains material for study and practice in all these divisions of the subject, arranged with a view to affording the pupil as much growth-giving exercise as possible, and to economizing the time and energy of the teacher. The subject matter for composition, both oral and written, has been carefully chosen with the design of securing interest, for much experience has convinced the writer that the value of such work is in exact proportion to the zest with which it is carried on. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School English: Composition-Rhetoric-Literature The literature selections have been edited with the design not only of supplying necessary information but also of inducing the student to do his own thinking. There is at present far too much so-called appreciation and far too little real thought expended upon literature. In the prepara tion of the Exercises and of the Notes and Questions the authors have constantly borne in mind this supreme aim of education - the development of the ability to think. Teachers are therefore urged to require the students to write all the Exercises and to answer all the Questions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sources of Interest in High School English The purpose of this book is to show what relation litera ture bears to the youth. The subject is treated from the standpoint of the various types of literary art forms with a View to determine how the different elements of this art interest the readers, and at what stage of development they are most potent. The particular field covered is the high school period, but the grade immediately preceding this has also been considered, in order to show the transition from grammar to secondary schools. The general subject relation of literature to children has been treated before, but under different school condi tions and with a different literary purpose in view. Clark Wissler (pedagogical Seminary, vol. 5) conducted an investigation of the reading of some 2000 children in Indiana schools, based upon the selections in the class readers, from the second to the fifth year. He deals with children of an earlier age than those considered in this book, and he makes no attempt to find elements of inter est in the several classes of literature; but his classification of selections is practically the same as this, and the choice of literary works shown in his report is of interest for com parison with that of older pupils. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook for English Teachers: For Use in the Texas High Schools The plan outlined in the following pages provides for the study of composition and literature throughout the High School course, but suggests more writing in the first two years than in the last two, and more reading in the last two years than in the first two. Moreover, it suggests that the Herrick and Damon be used intensively for the first few weeks, by a close study of its principles and by an application of them to subjects of oral and written composition; and then that a classic or two be studied intensively, both for the literature and for a review of the text through composition subjects based upon the classics studied. For example, the manual suggests that the Herrick and Damon be studied and applied through Chapter V. For the first month, also that Treasure Island be read through rapidly out of class; and that the second month be given to some of the selections in the Elson Reader, Eighth Grade, also to a detailed study Of Treasure Island. This plan will enable the teacher to treat the Chapters of the text, also the classics read, as a whole, and will therefore give unity to the work. It will also' enable the teacher to correlate the composition work and the literature, to apply the principles of the text as learned, and thus fix and vitalize them. This same general plan will be followed throughout the first year, except that more and more attention will be given to the classics and less and less attention to the text as we proceed in the work. In addi tion to' the intensive reading of one or more classics for each three months of the year, this plan provides for the home reading of a few classics which are grouped to include both poetry and prose and various types of literature. These extensive readings are arranged to supplement the textbook, and to awaken an interest in reading. They are also adapted to the ages of the pupils. Time is allotted throughout the work for frequent reviews. However, the teacher may wish to arrange the time differently. Reviews should be frequent and thorough; each week the work should be connected with the previous week; each day the work should be connected with that of the previous day. Often written reviews, five or ten minutes in length, at the beginning of the class hour, will awaken interest and test the pupil's preparation for the day. When sections of the textbook are completed, or when classics studied in the class are finished, review should be required.
