Book excerpt: American Education: A History, 5e is a comprehensive, highly-regarded history of American education from pre-colonial times to the present. Chronologically organized, it provides an objective overview of each major period in the development of American education, setting the discussion against the broader backdrop of national and world events. The first text to explore Native American traditions (including education) prior to colonization, it also offers strong, ongoing coverage of minorities and women. New to this much-anticipated fifth edition is substantial expanded attention to the discussions of Native American education to reflect recent scholarship, the discussion of teachers and teacher leaders, and the educational developments and controversies of the 21st century.
Book Synopsis Readings in the History of Education: A Collection of Sources and Readings to Illustrate the Development of Educational Practice, Theory, and Organiza by : Ellwood P. Cubberley
Download or read book Readings in the History of Education: A Collection of Sources and Readings to Illustrate the Development of Educational Practice, Theory, and Organiza written by Ellwood P. Cubberley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in the History of Education: A Collection of Sources and Readings to Illustrate the Development of Educational Practice, Theory, and Organization The Readings which this volume reproduces have been collected, from time to time, by the author in connection with the instruction of university classes in the general history of education, and have been used with students as reading supplemental to a lecture course on the subject. They are now gathered together and organized into the present volume, and made to run parallel with and to supplement the authors textbook on the History of Education, published at this same time. The chapter arrangement of the two books is the same, and the different Readings are referred to by cross-reference (R. 172, etc.) throughout the History volume. At the same time the selections are of such a general nature, have been so organized and arranged, and their importance and significance are so explained in the chapter introductions, that the volume of Readings may be used as a reference volume of sources by instructors using other texts on the history of education. The Readings have been selected and arranged primarily with a view to illustrating the history of educational practice and progress and organization, rather than the history of educational theory, though a number of typical and illustrative selections from the more important writers on educational theory, and particularly modem theory, have been included. They have also been selected with a view to illustrating that aspect of the history of educational progress which conceives of educational development as being a phase of the rise and preservation and spread of our western civilization. Book Synopsis The Development of the Secondary Curriculum by : Michael H. Price
Download or read book The Development of the Secondary Curriculum written by Michael H. Price and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1986. This book's focus is on English secondary schooling in the late 19th and 20th Centuries, during which the definition of a general ‘secondary’ education was itself negotiated and consolidated before the development of secondary modern and then comprehensive schools. In each chapter, a specialist contributor considers the changing ideology, shape and status of one of the seven traditional academic subjects, namely Classics, Modern Languages, English, History, Geography, Mathematics and Science. These seven school subjects have dominated the academic school curriculum since the nineteenth century and continue to exert a powerful influence upon the contemporary school curriculum today despite the emergence of various rivals and the growing status of ‘practical' subjects.
Book Synopsis An Historical Introduction to American Education by : Gerald L. Gutek
Download or read book An Historical Introduction to American Education written by Gerald L. Gutek and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2012-09-18 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guteks classic volume on the history of American education has been thoroughly revised and updated to provide a twenty-first-century perspective on the development of American educational institutions. Like earlier editions, the well-researched Third Edition employs a topical approach to examine the evolution of key institutions like the common school and the high school, as well as significant movements like progressive education, racial desegregation, and multiculturalism. Primary source readings enhance and reinforce chapter content and feature new writings from Benjamin Rush, Horace Mann, Maria Montessori, W. E. B. Du Bois, John Dewey, and Jane Addams. Two new chapters add depth to this comprehensive, richly illustrated work. Immigration, Multiculturalism, and Education examines the response of public schools to the education of immigrant children in the context of Americas industrialization and urbanization. This compelling addition also looks at the changing demographics of immigration and discusses the experiences and contributions of Hispanic Americans and Asian Americans. Progressive Education and John Dewey explores the origins of progressive education, the philosophies of John Dewey and other leading progressive educators, and this movements ongoing influence in American classrooms. The Third Editions topical organization lends itself to multiple uses in the classroom. Each chapter provides the historical foundation for the study of a contemporary topic in education, including the organization and structure of schools, the philosophy of education, early childhood education, curriculum and instruction, multicultural and bilingual education, and educational policy.

Book excerpt: In this book the author looks at the past, present and the future of history teaching in primary schools in an attempt to provide a practical framework for teachers. Section two offers case studies, curriculum materials and designs, teaching ideas and methods, teacher-development and curriculum development materials, at the same time as tying it in to the existing knowledge-base. Section three considers the 'perennial dilemmas' for school history in the 21st century, including: how can history survive in an increasingly over-crowded and competitive school curriculum? How can history be harnessed to improvements in literacy and numeracy? What should the primary history curriculum contain? How can IT secure easier access to historical information and evidence?
