Book Synopsis Supplementary Material and Solutions Manual for Mathematical Modeling in the Environment by : Charles R. Hadlock
Download or read book Supplementary Material and Solutions Manual for Mathematical Modeling in the Environment written by Charles R. Hadlock and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual is meant to provide supplementary material and solutions to the exercises used in Charles Hadlock's textbook, Mathematical Modeling in the Environment. The manual is invaluable to users of the textbook as it contains complete solutions and often further discussion of essentially every exercise the author presents in his book. This includes both the mathematical/computational exercises as well as the research questions and investigations. Since the exercises in the textbook are very rich in content, (rather than simple mechanical problems), and cover a wide range, most readers will not have the time to work out every one on their own. Readers can thus still benefit greatly from perusing solutions to problems they have at least thought about briefly. Students using this manual still need to work out solutions to research questions using their own sources and adapting them to their own geographic locations, or to numerical problems using their own computational schemes, so this manual will be a useful guide to students in many course contexts. Enrichment material is included on the topics of some of the exercises. Advice for teachers who lack previous environmental experience but who want to teach this material is also provided and makes it practical for such persons to offer a course based on these volumes. This book is the essential companion to Mathematical Modeling in the Environment.

Book Synopsis The Chicago Guide to Writing about Multivariate Analysis, Second Edition by : Jane E. Miller
Download or read book The Chicago Guide to Writing about Multivariate Analysis, Second Edition written by Jane E. Miller and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many different people, from social scientists to government agencies to business professionals, depend on the results of multivariate models to inform their decisions. Researchers use these advanced statistical techniques to analyze relationships among multiple variables, such as how exercise and weight relate to the risk of heart disease, or how unemployment and interest rates affect economic growth. Yet, despite the widespread need to plainly and effectively explain the results of multivariate analyses to varied audiences, few are properly taught this critical skill. The Chicago Guide to Writing about Multivariate Analysis is the book researchers turn to when looking for guidance on how to clearly present statistical results and break through the jargon that often clouds writing about applications of statistical analysis. This new edition features even more topics and real-world examples, making it the must-have resource for anyone who needs to communicate complex research results. For this second edition, Jane E. Miller includes four new chapters that cover writing about interactions, writing about event history analysis, writing about multilevel models, and the “Goldilocks principle” for choosing the right size contrast for interpreting results for different variables. In addition, she has updated or added numerous examples, while retaining her clear voice and focus on writers thinking critically about their intended audience and objective. Online podcasts, templates, and an updated study guide will help readers apply skills from the book to their own projects and courses. This continues to be the only book that brings together all of the steps involved in communicating findings based on multivariate analysis—finding data, creating variables, estimating statistical models, calculating overall effects, organizing ideas, designing tables and charts, and writing prose—in a single volume. When aligned with Miller’s twelve fundamental principles for quantitative writing, this approach will empower readers—whether students or experienced researchers—to communicate their findings clearly and effectively.

Book Synopsis The Problem with Survey Research by : George Beam
Download or read book The Problem with Survey Research written by George Beam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Problem with Survey Research makes a case against survey research as a primary source of reliable information. George Beam argues that all survey research instruments, all types of asking-including polls, face-to-face interviews, and focus groups-produce unreliable and potentially inaccurate results. Because those who rely on survey research only see answers to questions, it is impossible for them, or anyone else, to evaluate the results. They cannot know if the answers correspond to respondents' actual behaviors (objective phenomena) or to their true beliefs and opinions (subjective phenomena). Reliable information can only be acquired by observation, experimentation, multiple sources of data, formal model building and testing, document analysis, and comparison. In fifteen chapters divided into six parts-Ubiquity of Survey Research, The Problem, Asking Instruments, Asking Settings, Askers, and Proper Methods and Research Designs-The Problem with Survey Research demonstrates how asking instruments, settings in which asking and answering take place, and survey researchers themselves skew results and thereby make answers unreliable. The last two chapters and appendices examine observation, other methods of data collection and research designs that may produce accurate or correct information, and shows how reliance on survey research can be overcome, and must be.
