Book excerpt: In a distant corner of the cosmos, on an advanced planet known as Newel, a hero is created using super science. This hero is named Gar-A and his destiny is driven by a freak occurrence with a black hole. He finds himself seemingly stranded on a distant planet called Earth, a strange place that exists in a parallel dimension away from his home world. Newelians look like humans, but this is where the similarities end. Made of an incredibly dense molecular structure, they are gifted with incredible strength and durability. Their superior mental capacities and half-millennium life span make them astonishingly powerful. On Earth, Gar-A becomes known as Major Alpha, the premier costumed hero of his age. He follows his heart, and soon, he and his human wife, Kate, build a life and family together. Their son, Mik, lives a life most fanboys can only dream of in their four-color fantasies. Mik, considered a power-normal, dreams of glory as he strives to make the most of his small portion of Newelian abilities. A tragic first outing opens young Miks eyes to a series of revelations about his fathers legacy, as his dream of being a superhero becomes a twisted nightmare. If he is to realize his fate, Mik must find the courage to escape the dark shadow of his father. As he makes new allies and enemies, he finds himself forced to pursue his own path toward a greater destiny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of scholarly conceptions of the Mediterranean focus on the sea’s northern shores, with its historical epicentres of Spain, France or Italy. This book seeks to demonstrate the importance of economic, political and cultural networks emanating from the Mediterranean’s lesser-studied southern shores. The various chapters emphasize the activities that made connections between the southern shores, sub-Saharan Africa, the lands along its northern shores, and beyond to the United States. In doing so, the book avoids a Eurocentric approach and details the importance of the players and regions of the southern hinterland, in the analysis of the Mediterranean space. The cultural aspects of the North African countries, be they music, literature, film, commerce or political activism, continue to transform the public spheres of the countries along the northern shores of the Mediterranean, and beyond to the whole of the European continent. In its focus on the often overlooked North African shore, the work is an innovative contribution to the historiography of the Mediterranean region. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of North African Studies.

Book excerpt: How widespread was authorship among rulers in the premodern Islamic world? The writings of different types of rulers in different regions and periods are analyzed in this book, from the early centuries in the central lands of Islam to 19th century Sudan. The composition of poetry appears as the most fertile area for authorship among rulers. Prose writings show a wide variety, from astrology to bookmaking, from autobiography to creeds. Some of the rulers made claims to special knowledge, but in all cases authorship played a special role in the construction of the rulers' authority and legitimacy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus, Son of Mary was from a line of Israelite Prophets sent to the Jews to proclaim the message of monotheism and to purify and confirm the law of Moses. The Jewish religious leaders rejected Jesus after he challenged their authority and rebuked them for their iniquities and excesses. The factions who believed in Jesus--known later as "Christians"--exaggerated his status, deified him and worshipped him alongside Allāh. The Jews in turn used the misguidance and excesses of the Christians to vilify the person and character of Jesus who is free and innocent of the excesses of the Christians and the unfounded claims of the Jews. The conflict between the Jews and Christians played out over the centuries and can be observed in the anti-Christian polemics in Talmudic literature and the anti-Jewish sentiment that Christian Europe retained into the 20th century. The Qurʾān and the Prophetic traditions make clear the correct position regarding Jesus to both of these groups--the "People of the Book" (ahl al-kitāb)--in their disputes with each other: One failed to act by the truth when it came to them and rejected the message of Jesus, and the other acted upon ignorance--in opposition to authentic revealed knowledge--and fell into exaggeration by worshipping Jesus alongside Allāh.
