Book Synopsis Peasant Intellectuals by : Steven M. Feierman
Download or read book Peasant Intellectuals written by Steven M. Feierman and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1990-11-14 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars who study peasant society now realize that peasants are not passive, but quite capable of acting in their own interests. But, do coherent political ideas emerge within peasant society or do peasants act in a world where elites define political issues? Peasant Intellectuals is based on ethnographic research begun in 1966 and includes interviews with hundreds of people from all levels of Tanzanian society. Steven Feierman provides the history of the struggles to define the most basic issues of public political discourse in the Shambaa-speaking region of Tanzania. Feierman also shows that peasant society contains a rich body of alternative sources of political language from which future debates will be shaped.

Book Synopsis Peasant Poverty and Persistence in the Twenty-First Century by : Julio Boltvinik
Download or read book Peasant Poverty and Persistence in the Twenty-First Century written by Julio Boltvinik and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2016-08-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peasants are a majority of the world’s poor. Despite this, there has been little effort to bridge the fields of peasant and poverty studies. Peasant Poverty and Persistence in the Twenty-first Century provides a much-needed critical perspective linking three central questions: Why has peasantry, unlike other areas of non-capitalist production, persisted? Why are the vast majority of peasants poor? And how are these two questions related? Interweaving contributions from various disciplines, the book provides a range of responses, offering new theoretical, historical and policy perspectives on this peasant 'world drama'. Scholars from both South and North argue that, in order to find the policy paths required to overcome peasants’ misery, we need a seismic transformation in social thought, to which they make important contributions. They are convinced that we must build upon the peasant economy’s advantages over agricultural capitalism in meeting the challenges of feeding the growing world population while sustaining the environment. Structured to encourage debate among authors and mutual learning, Peasant Poverty and Persistence takes the reader on an intellectual journey toward understanding the peasantry.
Book Synopsis Peasant Society and Marxist Intellectuals in China by : Kamal Sheel
Download or read book Peasant Society and Marxist Intellectuals in China written by Kamal Sheel and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whereas most writing on the Communist Revolution in China has concentrated on the influence of intellectual leaders, this book examines the role of peasants in the upheaval, viewing them not as a malleable mass but as a dynamic social force interacting with the radical intelligentsia. Focusing on the Xinjiang region, Kamal Sheel traces the historical roots of the early twentieth-century agrarian crisis that led to a large-scale revolution in the late 1920s, one of the most successful peasant movements organized by the Chinese Communists. A fresh analysis emerges of the remarkable Marxist intellectual Fang Zhimin, who used his deeply entrenched rural connections to organize the movement through a creative synthesis of traditional folk concepts with modern Marxist thought. This history begins with the impact of the Taiping Rebellion and proceeds to document the rapid disintegration of the small peasant economy under the pressures of world economics, a "state in crisis," and a qualitatively different landed upper class. It discusses exploitation, protest, and rural uprisings in the context of the "crisis of paternalism," marked by a progressive deterioration in the social relationships in rural areas. Integrating this investigation of rural upheaval with recent social science theories on peasant movements, the study ultimately explores the growth of the Xinjiang revolutionary movement. Book Synopsis Everyday Forms of Peasant Resistance by : Forrest D. Colburn
Download or read book Everyday Forms of Peasant Resistance written by Forrest D. Colburn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peasant rebellions are uncommon. "Everyday Forms of Peasant Resistance" explores peasants' foot dragging, feigned ingorance, false compliance, manipulation, flight, slander, theft, arson, sabotage, and similar prosaic forms of struggle. These kinds of resistance stop well short of collective defiance, a strategy usually suicidal for the subordinate. The central argument about peasant resistance is presented in the opening chapter by James Scott in which he summarizes and extends the thesis of his book on Malaysia's peasantry, "Weapons of the Weak". Scott's ideas are employed and refined in the ensuing seven country studies of peasant resistance: Poland, India, Egypt, Colombia, China, Nicaragua and Zimbabwe.
Book Synopsis The Latin American Peasant by : Andrew Pearse
Download or read book The Latin American Peasant written by Andrew Pearse and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-02 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published 1975, The Latin American Peasant is not a historian’s book, the presentation is rather sociological in that it seeks to explain the working out of a process of social transformation and the social forces which are released by the pursuit of common interests by social entities such as classes and territorial groups, and the pursuit of a vision of livelihood by individuals and families. The peasant, in the sense of this book, is the agricultural producer and cottage craftsman of pre industrial and partially industrial societies, who produces for the provisioning of his own household, and for market exchange, and lives in land groups. The concept peasant, taken as equivalent of the word campesino or campones, does have both historical and geographical reality in the Latin American context. The book discusses important themes such as land labor institutions in Latin America; peasant action; the transformation of the estate; peasants and revolution in Bolivia; and peasant organization and peasant destinies. This this is an important book for scholars and researchers of Latin American sociology, rural sociology, historical sociology and sociology in general.
Book Synopsis Agrarianism as Modernity in 20th-Century Europe by : Alex Toshkov
Download or read book Agrarianism as Modernity in 20th-Century Europe written by Alex Toshkov and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst Soviet communism and its relationship with modernity has been widely studied to date, the agrarian experiment in Eastern Europe has been relegated to the margins of historical analysis. In this comparative study, Alex Toshkov uncovers the history of agrarianism after the First World War and explores its place as an alternative modernity to liberal democracy and capitalism. Drawing on a wealth of archival material, this book explores the transnational connections between the paradigmatic cases of Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia, as well as the International Agrarian Bureau in Prague, teasing out contradictions, hidden records and silenced interpretations of agrarianism. In addition, it uses a microhistorical approach to present an innovative theoretical framework which adds to our understanding of nationalism, political corruption, and alterity and the subaltern. This fascinating study restores interwar agrarianism to its rightful place as one of the most original and significant political currents in 20th-century Europe.
