Download or read book Sixties Ireland written by Mary E. Daly and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provocative new history of Ireland during the long 1960s exposes the myths of Ireland's modernisation. Mary E. Daly questions traditional interpretations which see these years as a time of prosperity when Irish society – led by a handful of key modernisers – abandoned many of its traditional values in its search for economic growth. Setting developments in Ireland in a wider European context, Daly shows instead that claims for the economic transformation of Ireland are hugely questionable: Ireland remained one of the poorest countries in western Europe until the end of the twentieth century. Contentious debates in later years over contraception, divorce, and national identity demonstrated continuities with the past that long survived the 1960s. Spanning the period from Ireland's economic rebirth in the 1950s to its entry into the EEC in 1973, this is a comprehensive reinterpretation of a critical period in Irish history with clear parallels for Ireland today.

Book Synopsis U.S. Agriculture's Potential to Supply World Food Markets by : Clark Edwards
Download or read book U.S. Agriculture's Potential to Supply World Food Markets written by Clark Edwards and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extract: Domestic markets are growing too slowly to absorb increases in U.S. farm production. But reliance on foreign markets can make farmers vulnerable to sudden swings in prices, which are transmitted to other domestic sectors as well. This report assesses U.S. agriculture's capacity to meet domestic and export demands, and the likely consequences of doing so, under different economic assumptions about the future. By shifting production among regions, adopting new technology, and keeping up the quality of its resources, U.S. agriculture could double its exports within the next 30 years.

Download or read book Ageing in Asia written by Roger Goodman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume takes four key themes related to ageing – the experience of old age; intergenerational relations; economics of and social policy for ageing; longevity and the culture of ageing - and examines how these issues are emerging in different regions of Asia, specifically, the former Soviet Union, South Asia, China, Japan and South-East Asia. In placing these Asian cases studies in the broader context of debates about, and policies on, ageing more generally, it brings them into the mainstream of comparative research on ageing from which they have been too often excluded. As the studies show, the relationship between ageing and poverty is a complex one and often reflects policy towards the aged rather than that the aged themselves are unproductive and dependent. Ageing, moreover, can no longer be considered as simply a national question; we also need to consider the implications of its global dimension in terms of issues such as human rights and quality of life.
Download or read book The Sixties written by David Farber and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of original essays represents some of the most exciting ways in which historians are beginning to paint the 1960s onto the larger canvas of American history. While the first literature about this turbulent period was written largely by participants, many of the contributors to this volume are young scholars who came of age intellectually in the 1970s and 1980s and thus write from fresh perspectives. The essayists ask fundamental questions about how much America really changed in the 1960s and why certain changes took place. In separate chapters, they explore how the great issues of the decade--the war in Vietnam, race relations, youth culture, the status of women, the public role of private enterprise--were shaped by evolutions in the nature of cultural authority and political legitimacy. They argue that the whirlwind of events and problems we call the Sixties can only be understood in the context of the larger history of post-World War II America.
