Chapter xiii The Sun Revealed by Science inasmuch as the foregoing chapters have treated of the mythology of the sun, its worship, and the curious legends and traditions regarding that luminary, any discussion of the sun astronomically speaking, and considered in the light of modern science, would seem out of place and irrelevant. Still, the fact that lore does not necessarily embrace the archaic and mythological alone but may include fact as well as fancy, renders a reference to what scientific solar research has accomplished entirely proper in this volume. Further than this, such matter must also serve to bring to mind what man has achieved in his desire to know more about the great system of which the world is such an insignificant part. The pages of the history of man that record his knowledge of the sun, as revealed by long years of research, are among the most interesting, if not the most wonderful, that human progress has inscribed. Marvellous strides have been made toward solving the many enigmatic problems that the subject presents, and man has of late, through the wonderful ingenuity of those tireless and gifted toilers in this field, accomplished so much, that a resume of what has been done even in the last ten years reads like the pages of a romance. Our knowledge of the sun, physically and scientifically speaking, is of comparatively recent date. In fact, only a hundred years ago the question of the habitability of the sun was discussed in all seriousness by the astronomers of the day, but with the invention of new apparatus, the construction of powerful telescopes, the development of spectroscopic research, and the zeal of intelligent men, this question and many other difficult solar problems have been positively solved, ..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sun Lore of All Ages: A Collection of Myths and Legends Concerning the Sun and Its Worship All Ages, a wealth of interesting material pertaining to the mythology and folk-lore of the sun and moon was discovered, which seemed worth collating in a separate volume. Further research in the field of the solar myth revealed sufficient matter to warrant the publica tion of a volume devoted solely to the legends, traditions, and superstitions that all ages and nations have woven about the sun, especially in View of the fact that, to the author's knowledge, no such publication has yet appeared. The literature of the subject is teeming with interest, linked as it is with the life-story of man kind from the cradle of the race to the present day, for the solar myth lies at the very foundation of all mythology, and as such must forever claim pre eminence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all cultures and at all times, humans have told stories about where they came from, who they are and how they should live their lives. 'Myths and Mythologies' brings together the key classic and contemporary writings - philosophical, psychological, sociological, semiological and cognitivist - on myth. To the insider, myths contain truth, revelation and a 'history of ourselves'; to the outsider, a culture s myths can be seen as the product of foolish, infantile and wishful thinking. Myths tell us about specific cultures, about human creativity, and how narrative shapes and reflects understanding. The 'Reader' is an invaluable resource for students and scholars interested in the impact of narrative on human culture and the meaning of truth in religious language.

Book excerpt: Presents ample evidence that the earliest known mythologies concerning our life-giving sun have been handed down to us throughout the centuries, now disguised or hidden in our current religious systems, including Christianity. The sun myths that preceded Christianity became common to most cultures, as they often shared their myths when making contact with others. As a result, many pagan religions shared the same general sun myths while using different gods to represent the same story. Christianity also adopted some facets of the sun myth story. This was done to unify various pagan groups and make them more open to Christianity. It is fascinating to recognize the saviour Christ within certain sun myth stories. This is not to say that Jesus is a complete myth, but that certain mythologies were added to his life to make the theology complete. The evidence is hard to refutealthough determining the exact degree of this union will always be uncertain.
