Bobby and Abby's mixed marriage angered their families. Her wealthy white parents disowned her after she married a Hispanic, and Bobby's father felt that his son was denying his heritage. Now Bobby wants Abby to have the baby in the tiny New Mexico town of Esperanza where he grew up so she can experience the feeling of 'La Familia,' where everyone helps one another. Abby reluctantly agrees, then Bobby mysteriously disappears. The neighbors gather around to help, and new entanglements ensue in this wonderful first novel by two talented authors who vividly bring to life the beauty of New Mexico and its people"Booklist.
Book Synopsis Sunlight on Shadow by : Zsofi Teleki
Download or read book Sunlight on Shadow written by Zsofi Teleki and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sunlight on Shadow is a memoir, not just of a life, but of a small nation continually sucked into the wars of the powerful . The story is told through the lives of three diverse families: an intellectual medical family, a struggling civil servants family and one historically prominent family. The author is your guide to history that is little known and almost never included in any history class. The story begins with the parents of the author, they slowly tell their daughter of their experiences in WWII and how they survived. They also take the risk of telling her the truth, not the propaganda. Life for Hungarians post war was a misery of fear, despair, and fight to survive. Survival is not just a struggle for the body, it is also a silent never ending fight to hold on to humanity and dignity and truth. It is in this atmosphere that the author slowly becomes the memory keeper, first for her mother and later as a woman for her aunts, father and her mother in law. Long before that, Zsofi learns to treasure her moments of sunshine and to understand the importance of love and respect in family and friendship. History continues to disrupt and the family flees into exile. The new world provides safety and opportunity, but it is strange and unknown. It is a struggle for a girl coming of age Hungarian in America. Within the shelter of the emigre community she finds life with a fellow Hungarian. Together they build a life very much based on the life they lost. While they raise three children, and welcome a lonely boy into their midst they travel often to Budapest and there learn all the things they could not as children. Most important they learn to keep and teach their heritage and live where life has swept them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of urbanism in Iraq occurred under the distinctive climatic conditions of the Mesopotamian plain; rainy winters and extremely hot summers profoundly affected the formation and development of these early cities. Sunlight and Shade in the First Cities explores the relationship between society, culture and lived experience through the way in which sunlight was manipulated in the urban built environment. Light is approached as both a physical phenomenon, which affects comfort and the practical usability of space, and as a symbolic phenomenon rich in social and religious meaning. Through the reconstruction of ancient urban light environments, to the extent possible from the archaeological remains, the location, timing and meaning of activities within early Mesopotamian cities become accessible. Sunlight is shown to have influenced the formation and symbolism of urban architecture and shaped the sensory experience of urban life. From cities as part of the sunlit landscape, this work progresses to consider city forms as a whole and then to the examination of architectural types; residential, sacred and palatial. Architectural analysis is complemented by analysis of contemporary textual sources, along with iconographic and artefactual evidence. The cities under detailed examination are limited to those on the Mesopotamian plain, focusing on the Early Dynastic periods up to the end of the second millennium BC.This volume demonstrates the utility of light as a tool with which to analyse, not just ancient Mesopotamian settlements, but the built environment of any past society, especially where provision of, or protection from sunlight critically affects life. The active influence of sunlight is demonstrated within Mesopotamian cities at every scale of analysis.

Book Synopsis New Philosophy of Human Nature by : Oliva Sabuco
Download or read book New Philosophy of Human Nature written by Oliva Sabuco and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a critical edition of the 1587 treatise by Oliva Sabuco, New Philosophy of Human Nature, written during the Spanish Inquisition. Puzzled by medicine’s abject failure to find a cure for the plague, Sabuco developed a new theory of human nature as the foundation for her remarkably modern holistic philosophy of medicine. Fifty years before Descartes, Sabuco posited a dualism that accounted for mind/body interaction. She was first among the moderns to argue that the brain--not the heart--controls the body. Her account also anticipates the role of cerebrospinal fluid, the relationship between mental and physical health, and the absorption of nutrients through digestion. This extensively annotated translation features an ample introduction demonstrating the work’s importance to the history of science, philosophy of medicine, and women’s studies.
