Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel is not the typical story about a sunken treasure hunt conducted by a cadre of experienced and adventurous men seeking their fortunes under the sea. These four men were just regular guys with no knowledge whatsoever of underwater treasure hunting with its many pitfalls and perils. These were close friends, who had finally reached a point in their rather tedious and somewhat boring lives, where they wanted to do something daring and exciting and, at the same time, provide them with a rare opportunity to become fabulously rich. In a determined effort to keep their activities a total secret from everyone, a thick layer of intrigue caused them many unnecessary hardships and almost turned each of them against the others. Unfortunately, some of their earlier important decisions were totally misguided, and they eventually learned that doing the right thing is always the best way to go. This story is about the day-to-day experiences of those men and how they were able to overcome each of the obstacles they encountered to finally reach a fair and successful conclusion.

Book excerpt: Based on the exceptional and fascinating eyewitness account of a seventeenth-century Spanish padre, Dave Horner's Shipwreck is the absorbing and true story of two immense galleons that were lost (along with hundreds of passengers and millions of pesos in treasure) to disasters at sea. Shipwreck is an extraordinary literary adventure which interweaves accounts of the many attempts throughout the past three centuries to recover the sunken treasure, including the recent discovery and salvage of one of the galleons by Dave Horner himself. Shipwreck is an outstanding history of true adventure on the high seas, past and present, which is wonderfully enhanced for the reader with 50 photographic illustrations, six maps, four line drawings, seven appendices, as well as bibliographies of archival sources, institutions, original documents or primary works, and a general listing of thematically appropriate titles for further suggested readings.

Book excerpt: "A remarkable book, in which a very wide spectrum of human behavior is on show---from colossal gullibility on the one hand, to extraordinary ingenuity and determination on the other." —The Daily Telegraph (UK) Treasure Hunt is the story of an obsession. Rumors of Spanish treasure, or gold and silver at the bottom of the sea, have been a part of maritime lore for centuries. In 1687, Captain William Phips brought back to port an incredible cargo---nearly forty tons of silver and gold---the treasure of the Spanish galleon Concepción, wrecked over forty years before on a coral reef in the middle of the ocean. The unimaginable had become real, and the great treasure-hunting boom had begun. Soon after Phips's success, there were numerous expeditions that meant to emulate his stunning achievement. During that same time there was also a boom in the invention of crude and often very dangerous diving equipment. Many of these new projects were promoted on the infant stock market, where gambling and treasure hunting became closely connected with the birth of modern capitalism. By the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, treasure hunting had become a professional occupation, with a new breed of diver emerging. Much of their time was spent salvaging the wrecks of English and Dutch East-Indiamen carrying treasure to finance business in Asia. Ever since, men have been prepared to risk life and fortune in the search for underwater riches. The author of numerous books of maritime history, including The Pirate Wars and The Sack of Panamá, world-renowned historian Peter Earle returns with an extraordinary and little-known history---of outstanding bravery, of exceptional recklessness, and above all, of the unquenchable lust for treasure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story about the lust for gold and treasure," Fine writes. In the 1600s and 1700s, Spain dominated the oceans with its fleet of galleons. Coming to the New World, these ships filled their holds with gold and silver and treasures beyond imagining. The seaway between Spain and the New World was dubbed The Golden Highway. On their journeys back across the seas, many were wrecked on reefs or destroyed by hurricanes. The watery depths now hold their treasures. Today, treasure divers seek their fortunes by attempting--sometimes successfully, sometimes fatally--to retrieve these hordes of riches. In Treasures of the Spanish Main, readers relive each voyage of long ago as well as witness the modern wreck diver's efforts to extract their secrets. Included are: The 1622 fleet * The Concepcion * The Maravillas * The Shipwreck off Jupiter Beach * The San Jose * the 1715 Fleet * and the 1733 Fleet The voyages of centuries ago come alive with Fine's excellent historical detail. Readers will experience the wild storms and the results of unfortunate choices made by long-ago sailors. The eccentric treasure hunters of today, along with those of the past, create a mosaic of suspense and drama on the high seas. A must for everyone interested in pirates, treasure, sailing, history, or just plain fun.

Book excerpt: From aerial survey to zoology, Part I of this two-part encyclopedia covers all aspects of underwater archeology, treasure hunting and salvaging. For example, entries are included for different types of artifacts, notable treasure hunters, the various salvaging equipment, and techniques in mapping and excavating. Part II covers the shipwrecks themselves, dividing them into 13 geographical categories. Beginning with the northernmost category (Canada) and ending with the southernmost (South America), every known shipwreck--both identified and unidentified--receives an entry in alphabetical order under its appropriate geographical category. Entries are by name, such as Andrea Gail, Titanic, and Queen Ann's Revenge. Unidentified is used when a shipwreck's name remains unknown. Entries give the nationality (e.g., Spanish, British, American), type (schooner, frigate, brig are three), function (examples: slave transportation, piracy, fishing), location and history of the shipwreck.

Book excerpt: In Search of Spanish Treasure includes the stories of the excavations of ships ranging from a second-century Roman ship off Sicily to a nineteenth-century steamer off the North Wales coast, but most of the expeditions described were in search of some of the most important and historic ships of the Elizabethan era. in 1968/9, one of the flagships of the Spanish Armada, the Santa Maria de la Rosa, was excavated, and in 1970 another flagship, the Gran Griffin, was the subject of an expedition off Fair Isle, Scotland. The conclusions drawn from these excavations have substantiated the author's hypothesis that the inability of the Armada to inflict hull damage on any of Queen Elizabeth's ships was due to the poor quality of Spanish cast-iron shot. He also casts doubt upon Drake's almost legendary reputation as a captain and leader of men, comparing him unfavourably with Sir John Hawkins and Sir Richard Grenville. The excavations have generally been preceded by research in archives at home and abroad, and the lively accounts of the ships and their career reflect the thorough scholarship that accompanies underwater archaeology at its best. This research is often necessary to locate the approximate position of the wreaks in the first place, but it is equally important in enabling divers to interpret and piece together what they find. The accounts of the expeditions convey their excitement and frustration: how a fortune in gold bars was covered by shifting sands between dives; how Sir Richard Grenville's famous ship, Revenge, eluded the expedition after six months of intensive diving and a number of false discoveries; and of the long search for Drake's coffin off Porto Bello, where he died of dysentery in 1596. -- Inside jacket flap.
