Book Synopsis The New Astronomy: Opening the Electromagnetic Window and Expanding our View of Planet Earth by : Wayne Orchiston

This book was released on 2006-01-17 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an unusual book, combining as it does papers on astrobiology, history of astronomy and sundials, but—after all—Woody Sullivan is an unusual man. In late 2003 I spent two fruitful and enjoyable months in the Astronomy Department at the University of Washington (UW) working on archival material accumulated over the decades by Woody, for a book we will co-author with Jessica Chapman on the early development of Australian astronomy. The only serious intellectual distraction I faced during this period was planning for an IAU colloquium on transits of Venus scheduled for June 2004 in England, where I was down to present the ‘Cook’ paper. I knew Woody was also interested in transits (and, indeed, anything remotely connected with shadows—see his paper on page 3), and in discussing the Preston meeting with him it transpired that his 60th birthday was timed to occur just one week later. This was where the seed of ‘Woodfest’ began to germinate. Why not invite friends and colleagues to join Woody in Seattle and celebrate this proud event? I put the idea to Woody and others at UW, they liked it, and ‘Woodfest’ was born.

Book Synopsis Experimental Practices in Interdisciplinary Art by :
Download or read book Experimental Practices in Interdisciplinary Art written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-09-26 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental Practices in Interdisciplinary Art presents the work of contemporary artists who are committed to experimenting in the marginal areas where artmaking, practice-based research, and scholarship intersect. Some work in laboratory settings, some in studios, and some in wild landscapes or abandoned buildings. But all are committed to interrogating the way that art is created and positioned in a culture that continues to marginalize artists working across disciplinary boundaries. Their projects range from inquiries into the way surveillance technologies are used to reinforce power structures to collaboratories that help us to re-envision our relationship with the natural world and with each other. In reflecting on their wide-ranging explorations and unusual methods, these unique artists provide fruitful insights for bringing creativity to bear on issues of public import.

Book Synopsis Our Celestial Clockwork: From Ancient Origins To Modern Astronomy Of The Solar System by : Richard Kerner
Download or read book Our Celestial Clockwork: From Ancient Origins To Modern Astronomy Of The Solar System written by Richard Kerner and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2021-08-24 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a superposition of two distinct narratives: the first is historical, discussing the evolution of astronomical knowledge since the dawn of civilizations; the second is scientific, conveying mathematical and physical content of each advancement. Great scientists of antiquity, Middle Ages and modern times until the 18th century, are presented along with their discoveries, through short biographies and anecdotes. Special care is taken to explain their achievements using mathematical and physical concepts of their time, with modern perspective added only when ancient methodology is too cumbersome or its language hardly understandable to contemporary readers. The book conveys a lot of astronomical facts and data in a pleasant and accessible manner. Almost all findings and discoveries made in ancient times are followed by simple mathematical exercises using basic knowledge, so that the reader can check the assertions himself. The book contains a lot of inedited illustrations. Geometrical schemes are given extra attention to make the examples clear and understandable. The language is simple and accessible to the young audience.
