Download or read book North Jersey Beer written by Chris Morris and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North Jersey residents have enjoyed frothy pints since the first brewhouse opened in Hoboken in 1641. Brewing was big in the Garden State prior to Prohibition, and by 1900, more than fifty breweries were in operation. Nearly half of them--like Krueger--were located in Newark. The dry reign of Prohibition and the region's proximity to major cities made it a hub for bootleggers and gangsters like Longy Zwillman and Waxey Gordon. Even after the Eighteenth Amendment was repealed, North Jersey brewing sputtered. Some independent breweries like Ballantine restarted operation, but it wasn't until the 1990s that the region saw a craft brewing renaissance. Today, Jerseyans enjoy premium ales and lagers from breweries like Climax, River Horse and New Jersey Beer Company. Beer writer Chris Morris explores the origins and the new revolution of brewing in North Jersey.

Book Synopsis General Statutes of New Jersey by : New Jersey
Download or read book General Statutes of New Jersey written by New Jersey and published by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 4322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation succeeded the previous edition of 1877. Two-and-a-half times the size of its predecessor, it records the greatest increase in public general legislation between any two consecutive compilations in New Jersey's history. Its bulk pays witness to the state's rapid growth during the nineteenth century and its engagement with the forces of modernity. Such topics as "Usury" and "Militia" in 1877 are redefined as "Interest" and "National Guard"; new additions include laws dealing with labor arbitration, civil rights and occupational safety. Luce's Table of Statutes, an invaluable tool originally published separately in 1900, is included in Volume I. Our reprint also has a detailed table of contents, a feature that was not included in the original work.

Book Synopsis Philadelphia's Germans by : Richard N. Juliani
Download or read book Philadelphia's Germans written by Richard N. Juliani and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Philadelphia’s Germans: From Colonial Settlers to Enemy Aliens, Richard N. Juliani examines the social, cultural, and political life, along with the ethnic consciousness, of Philadelphia’s Germans, from their participation in the founding of the colony of Pennsylvania to the entry of the United States into World War I. This book focuses on their paradoxical transformation from loyal citizens, who made great contributions as they became increasingly Americanized, to a people viewed as a foreign threat to the safety and security of the city and nation. It also considers the policies and treatment of government and views of the local press in reporting and interpreting the dilemma of German Americans during the transition.
Book Synopsis Leon Abbett's New Jersey by : Richard A. Hogarty
Download or read book Leon Abbett's New Jersey written by Richard A. Hogarty and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 2001 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following in the succession of his 25 predecessors, Leon Abbett twice served as governor of New Jersey in the late 19nth century. A lifelong Democrat, he was a dynamic and visionary party leader who guided the citizens of New Jersey into a new urban industrial age. While he was a machine politician and party boss, he was also a notable reformer. That was a formidable combination for his time. Grappling with a series of hot political issues and braving the passions and divisions spawned by the Civil War, Abbett was one of the ablest and most intriguing men ever to be governor. Several new ideas were transformed into public policy during his tenure. Both in style and strategy, Abbett represented a sharp break from his predecessors. He was a prime example of a governor who both in crisis and in ordinary times broadened gubernatorial authority. He became both a policy and party leader. In this context, he was an important forerunner to a type of governor that had not yet appeared on the American political stage.
