Book excerpt: I wasnt very happy when Mum told me that Granny and Grandpa were coming to live at our house, which is in a little village in the country. When they lived in a big house near London, we used to go and stay. Granny would cook nice meals, and we used to go up to the middle of London sometimes and visit the London Eye and the zoo or the shops in the West End. But when Grandpa got dementia, Mum said they should come and live at our house as we had a self-contained two-bedroom flat they could live in. She said the last tenants were a nightmare. If Granny and Grandpa were living with us, she could help Granny keep an eye on Grandpa. What with not going to stay with them near London anymore and having extra people in the house, I wasnt really sure that was what I wanted.

Book excerpt: These memoirs are written with the hope that they may prove not only interesting to read, but also give you, my family, a better understanding of where you came from. I have attempted to truthfully describe life as it was over the past eighty-plus years. I have tried to make our ancestors come to life as real people, experiencing the good and bad in life, as we all do. The Greeks say, “The dead die when those who loved them stop talking about them. As long as they are talked about and loved—they live.”

Book excerpt: When I started writing this journal, I had no intentions anyone else would even see a page of this because it had the worst of my life, and I didn't want anyone I love read it and loose respect in the person I push in public. I'm a very shy and very naive person. I am basically a loner. It is very hard for me to make friends, so I stay home a lot. Not too long ago, even in my old age, I found a very wonderful person that could see into my soul and pull me out. Diane and I have gotten to be the best of friends. Her name is Diane Wilson and she is the most wonderful, loving, caring friend I know! She listens to all my troubles and gives me advise, even though she has more than her share of troubles. She talks and I feel that I do have purpose in life. She is the sister I never had. She has so many problems, but she finds the time to be my best friend. I never liked this town--because the roll the streets up in the evening (well, it does seem like it). There aren't any places to go---nothing to see. Not for the adults--not for the kids. But, my sista-pal texts me and asks if Paul has any coffee left, or we will go out. We call that our gal-pal time. We just go to McD's and have a coke or a frape'and I tell her my troubles and she tells me her troubles. We would talk for ages, and cry in our frepe'. I would like to thank everyone for all the time they have spent making it possible for a shy, scared great grandmother to share her life----such as it is.

The smell was fresh and invigorating to me as I stood beside the old hickory tree with its new leaves, an iridescent bright green, glowing against the dreary gray sky. I stood quietly and watched a lone eagle soar above, looking for an unsuspecting prey hidden in the overgrown weeds in the long neglected fields. I had stayed away too long, now, I wanted to return to the source of my childhood.

Due to Johnnie's weakened and emaciated condition, the doctor felt certain Johnnie would not survive corrective surgery. However, the doctor felt there was no other choice and did say, "If Johnnie survives this, he'll live to be one hundred."Fortunately, the operation proved successful, and Johnnie was once again united with his siblings. The Johnson household eventually was filled with five rambunctious kids that were constantly up to some sort of shenanigans. From roller-skating on the roof to putting the smaller kids in the clothes dryer, this household of kids tested everyone's patience. Whether it be Mom, the live-in maid, or Aunt Betty (affectionately labeled "The Old Sow"), they were all eventually at their wits' end.One Saturday morning, Mom simply walked out the door, stepped into a motor home, and drove away. The maid simply disappeared. Aunt Betty, well she decided to move to Arizona! Though somewhat perplexed at all these departures, the kids knew they didn't need supervision!

Book excerpt: When H. Byron Earhart’s father enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, young Byron and his family moved into his grandparents' old-fashioned home with a coal-fired range and potbelly stove, and his mother took charge of the family business, a frozen food locker. Grandma was the undisputed head of the family. While his father served on the battleship USS Missouri, his grandparents and mother held the family and the business together. At Grandma’s House is a tribute to everyday Americans who provided the social glue for a country at war as they balanced fear and anxiety for loved ones with the challenges and pleasures of daily life. The experiences of the Earhart family and this Midwestern community, supplemented by contemporary documents, family photos, and professional illustrations, recount with vivid local color the drama that played out on the national and international stage.

Worried about their daughters' safety, their parents ship the girls off to their grandparents' cottage in a charming village where they hope they will be out of harm's way for the remainder of the summer. But little do they know that Tori and Mackenzie are about to once again be immersed into the midst of a dangerous investigation. The sisters are thrilled when they are joined by their cousins, Jack, Philip, and Rip. But it is not long before the quintet ironically discovers another fire scene this time in uptown Lockview. After beginning their own investigation to determine who is responsible for setting the fire, the Logan kids soon realize they have few clues, but an entire guilty-until-proven-innocent cast of townspeople. From the scary man who hangs out at the town diner to the disgusting video store owner to the librarian, butcher, mayor, pastor, and even their grandpa, the cousins have no shortage of suspects. In this suspenseful tale, five kids on a search for a crazy arsonist with a little help from their elders quickly discover that things and people are not always what they seem.
