Book excerpt: This volume explores the fascinating interactions and exchanges between British and Italian cultures from the early modern period to the present. It looks at how these exchanges were mediated through personal encounters, travel writings, and translations, involving a variety of protagonists: explorers, writers, poets, preachers, diplomats and tourists. In particular, this book examines the understanding of Italy as a destination and set of locations, each with their own distinctive geographical character, during a period which saw the creation of the modern Italian state. It also charts the shifts in travelling activity during this period, from early explorers and cartographers, via those taking part in the Grand Tour in the 18th and 19th centuries, to more modern poet-travellers and blogging tourists. Drawing upon literary studies, history, art history, cultural studies, translation studies, sociology and socio-linguistics, this volume takes a cross-disciplinary approach to its rich constellation of ‘cultural transactions’.

Book excerpt: This book addresses one of the most central, yet criticised, solutions for international tourism promotion, namely translation. It brings together theory and practice, explores the various challenges involved in translating tourism promotional materials (TPMs), and puts forward a sustainable solution capable of achieving maximum impact in the industry and society. The solution, in the form of a Cultural-Conceptual Translation (CCT) model, identifies effective translation strategies and offers a platform for making TPM translation more streamlined, efficient and easily communicated. Using the English-Malay language combination as a case study, the book analyses tourism discourse and includes a road test of the CCT model on actual end-users of TPMs as well as tourism marketers in the industry. Guidelines for best practices in the industry round out the book, which offers valuable insights not only for researchers but also, and more importantly, various stakeholders in the translation, tourism and advertising industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume study the relationship between language use and the concept of the “tourist gaze” through a range of communicative practices from different cultures and languages. From a pragmatic perspective, the authors investigate how language constantly adapts to contextual constraints which affect tourism discourse as a strategic meaning-making process that turns insignificant places into desirable tourist destinations. The case studies draw on both, in situ interactions with visitors, such as guided tours and counter information, old and new mediatized genres, i.e. guide books, travelogues, print advertising as well as TV-commercials, service web-sites and apps. Despite the diversity of data, one of the common findings in the volume is that staging the sensory ‘lived’ tourist experience is the lynchpin of all communicative practices. Hence, the use of tourism language reveals itself as the mirror of how ‘people on the move’ continuously enact as ‘tourists’ and ‘places’ are constructed as must-see ‘sights’.

Book excerpt: This volume stems from a workshop organised by the Corpus Linguistics and Language Variation in English Research Centre, known as CLAVIER, held at the Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. It brings together a series of double-reviewed studies on the nature of the dissemination of specialist knowledge in English, its transformation from being a mere repository of information into a proactive source of understanding and empowerment. Through the chapters, the various principles, conceptualisations, constructs and pragmatic dynamics of knowledge dissemination are shown in a range of discourse genres. The studies reveal the multi-levels of knowledge, its varied typology and its ongoing co-construction, maintenance and updating among heterogeneous audiences. Assuming that maintaining credibility and legitimacy is fundamental to successful communication in a globalised and virtual world, the essential complementary aspect to knowledge dissemination is the analysis of the language that builds trust in interpersonal interactions, in different contexts and settings. The first section of the book deals with the building of trust through different strategies in political, academic, tourist and educational contexts. The second discusses ways of building trust via linguistic devices in corporate communication. The third part is concerned with the maintenance and repairing of trust, and the fourth section presents the building/repairing trust processes in the medical sector. The collection is addressed to scholars of linguistics, particularly those concerned with the analysis of specialized languages and their impact on effective communication. It will also appeal to university teachers of English for Special Purposes and researchers interested in corpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis.

Book excerpt: Informed by the APPRAISAL Theory, this book analyses the construction of evaluative meanings in web-based English tourism texts (ETTs). It investigates the semantic potentiality of evaluative meaning in English tourism texts on Chinese, British and American websites, as well as the similarities and differences in constructing evaluation among the three varieties of ETTs. It is aimed to discover the characteristic preferences for particular appraisal resources in constructing evaluation in native ETTs, and to find out the deficiencies in using evaluation in ETTs on Chinese websites. Two analytical procedures are adopted: first, based on large corpus files, it discusses the semantic potentiality for evaluative meaning in the three types of ETTs; then, various evaluation features are explored in detail concerning resources of ATTITUDE, ENGAGEMENT and GRADUATION under the APPRAISAL framework. All discussions are conducted by combining quantitative statistics with qualitative analyses. Theoretically, the study modifies and extends some aspects of the APPRAISAL Theory so as to facilitate the analysis of evaluation in tourism discourse. The study is also instructive for Chinese ESL/EFL writers in writing English tourist texts or translating Chinese tourism texts into English.

Book excerpt: Teaching English for Tourism initiates a sustained academic discussion on the teaching and learning of English to tourism professionals, or to students who aspire to build a career in the tourism industry. Responding to a gap in the field, this is the first book of its kind to explore the implications of research in English for tourism (EfT) within the field of English for specific purposes. This edited volume brings together teachers and researchers of EfT from diverse national and institutional contexts, focusing on connecting current research in EfT contexts to classroom implications. It considers a wide range of themes related to the teaching of EfT, including theoretical concepts, methodological frameworks, and specific teaching methods. The book explores topics relating to the impact of changing technologies, the need for cultural understanding, and support for writing development, among others. Teaching English for Tourism explores this growing area of English for specific purposes and allows for researchers and practitioners to share their findings in an academic context. This unique book is ideal reading for researchers, post-graduate students, and professionals working in the fields of English language teaching and learning.

Book excerpt: This volume is composed of 24 papers originally presented as talks at the VIII National Conference of the Italian Association of University Language Centres (Associazione Italiana dei Centri Linguistici Universitari: AICLU), held at the University of Foggia, Italy, between 30 May and 1st June 2013. The contributions fall into five sections: 1) keynote addresses from plenary speakers; 2) innovative challenges for language centres; 3) new developments in teaching language for specific purposes; 4) proposals and case studies in Content and Language Integrated Learning; and 5) the use of new technologies in language learning. 18 papers are in English, four in Italian, one in French and one in German. The fact that three-quarters of the papers are in English reflects the way English has become the lingua franca of academic conferences today. However, in keeping with the ethos of CercleS (Confédération Européenne des Centres de Langues de l’Enseignement Supérieur, the pan-European organisation to which AICLU belongs), which is strongly committed to promoting plurilingualism, it was crucial that contributions would also be accepted in other languages. The volume represents the ‘state of the art’ in the field of language teaching and theory in university language centres not only in Italy, but also in other parts of Europe and the Mediterranean, and testifies to the rich variety of ways in which these centres are adapting and thriving in rapidly changing times.
