As she is about to be executed for a murder she didn't commit, young widow Dou Yi vows that, if she is innocent, snow will fall in midsummer and a catastrophic drought will strike. Three years later, a businesswoman visits the parched, locust-plagued town to take over an ailing factory. When her young daughter is tormented by an angry ghost, the new factory owner must expose the injustices Dou Yi suffered before the curse destroys every living thing. A contemporary re-imagining by acclaimed playwright Frances-Ya Chu Cowhig of one of the most famous classical Chinese dramas, which breathes new life into this ancient story, haunted by centuries of retelling. The world premiere of Snow in Midsummer on 23 February 2017 at the Swan Theatre, Stratford-Upon-Avon, launched the RSC's Chinese Translations Project, a cultural exchange bringing Chinese classics to a contemporary Western audience.

Book excerpt: The book is the volume of “The Art History of the Yuan Dynasty” among a series of books of “Deep into China Histories”. The earliest known written records of the history of China date from as early as 1250 BC, from the Shang dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BC) and the Bamboo Annals (296 BC) describe a Xia dynasty (c. 2070–1600 BC) before the Shang, but no writing is known from the period The Shang ruled in the Yellow River valley, which is commonly held to be the cradle of Chinese civilization. However, Neolithic civilizations originated at various cultural centers along both the Yellow River and Yangtze River. These Yellow River and Yangtze civilizations arose millennia before the Shang. With thousands of years of continuous history, China is one of the world's oldest civilizations, and is regarded as one of the cradles of civilization. The Zhou dynasty (1046–256 BC) supplanted the Shang and introduced the concept of the Mandate of Heaven to justify their rule. The central Zhou government began to weaken due to external and internal pressures in the 8th century BC, and the country eventually splintered into smaller states during the Spring and Autumn period. These states became independent and warred with one another in the following Warring States period. Much of traditional Chinese culture, literature and philosophy first developed during those troubled times. In 221 BC Qin Shi Huang conquered the various warring states and created for himself the title of Huangdi or "emperor" of the Qin, marking the beginning of imperial China. However, the oppressive government fell soon after his death, and was supplanted by the longer-lived Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD). Successive dynasties developed bureaucratic systems that enabled the emperor to control vast territories directly. In the 21 centuries from 206 BC until AD 1912, routine administrative tasks were handled by a special elite of scholar-officials. Young men, well-versed in calligraphy, history, literature, and philosophy, were carefully selected through difficult government examinations. China's last dynasty was the Qing (1644–1912), which was replaced by the Republic of China in 1912, and in the mainland by the People's Republic of China in 1949.Chinese history has alternated between periods of political unity and peace, and periods of war and failed statehood – the most recent being the Chinese Civil War (1927–1949). China was occasionally dominated by steppe peoples, most of whom were eventually assimilated into the Han Chinese culture and population. Between eras of multiple kingdoms and warlordism, Chinese dynasties have ruled parts or all of China; in some eras control stretched as far as Xinjiang and Tibet, as at present. Traditional culture, and influences from other parts of Asia and the Western world (carried by waves of immigration, cultural assimilation, expansion, and foreign contact), form the basis of the modern culture of China.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a selection of 16 stories and myths with which most Chinese are familiar. Of course, there are many hundreds, more or less well known, that could have been chosen. The stories represent a cross section of this tradition. They include stories based on the history of China, particularly set in the time of the 'Warring States' and the rise of civilisation in China with the consolidation of China under the Qin and Han Emperors and recounted in the two great Chinese classics "The Records of the Grand Historian" and "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms". Such stories as 'Jin Ke assassinates King Qin', 'Being Besieged on All Sides', 'Feast of Hongmen', 'Su Wu tends sheep', 'Three Visits to the Hut' and the 'Premier and General Make Peace' are roughly from the period 300BC to 300AD and are tales of heroes, treachery and struggles for power among the competing kingdoms and dynasties (Qin, 221–206 BC, followed by the Han, 206 BC–220 AD,). Other stories are from later in the 12th Century based on the novel "Water Margin', one of the four Chinese Classics written during the detested Yuan Dynasty when rebels and more often bandits, were accorded the status of heroes much as British highwaymen, Australian bushrangers and Western outlaws gained legendary status despite their heinous crimes. Titles include 'Water Margin: the Mountain Rebels', and 'Lin Chong in the Snow Temple', The historical accuracy of these stories is questionable as many versions are in circulation, most notably in popular comic books, TV shows and feature films, where historical accuracy, and often plot, comes a poor second to the special effects and fight scenes. Undoubtedly the real events have been distorted to suit the agenda of those who came after as many stories are anti-establishment and some bandit hero stories were banned during the Ming Dynasty and yet they have persisted and have been passed down over thousands of years. Other stories fall into the genre of mythology. Stories such as the 'The Calabash Brothers', although a modern story composed in the 1960s has its roots in Chinese folk religion and mythology. So too the classic tale of "The Journey to the West', that is infused with Buddhist and Taoist philosophy. Two of the tales recounted in this book, 'Monkey Strikes Lady White Bones Thrice' and 'Journey to the West and the Kingdom of Women', are full of fantastic demons, super heroes with super powers and magic and are reminiscent of the ancient Greek myths of Gods and monsters. Another genre are moralistic tales that have their share of the mystical, but which seek to teach a lesson, often a tragic tale of right versus wrong and good versus evil. Some are cautionary tales that warn against parents or Kings ignoring the needs of those they are meant to protect, perhaps to counter Confucianism that gained ascendancy during the reign of the Han Emperor Wudi. Again, many versions abound, but the general moral message is left intact. Such stories as 'Ma Liang and the Magic Paint Brush', 'Thunderstorm' 'Butterfly Lovers’ and 'Snow in Mid-summer' have their fair share of the improbable, but the charm and emotional force of each story is undeniable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title is a thorough introduction to ethical literary criticism, defined as a critical methodology to interpret literature from the perspective of ethics, with the whole set of concepts and theories elucidated and textual analyses provided. While building on ideas from both western ethical criticism and the Chinese tradition of moral criticism, ethical literary criticism acts as a counterpoint to the former's lack of theoretical foundations and applicable methodologies and the latter's tendency to make subjective moral judgments. Developed into a coherent theoretical framework, it asserts the ethical nature and edifying function of literature and thereby seeks to highlight in the literary text the ethical relationship and moral order among human beings and within society in the historical context. Though provocative to a degree, the arguments and methodological toolbox used inject a unique ethical dimension into literary criticism and will help readers understand anew the ethical and social potency of literature. The book's theoretical elucidation, examples from practical criticism and introduction to key terminologies make this book an essential guide for students and general readers interested in ethical literary criticism and a valuable read for scholars of literary criticism, ethical criticism and literary theory.

Book excerpt: Being taken into the USA Embassy in Hong Kong, and her brain was remotely controlled by electromagnetic mind control tech, Soleilmavis' story sounded weird, but it was true. Suffering horrible pain and many other strange symptoms, Soleilmavis Liu, one of many private citizens, discovered that she and many other people were test-subject victims for the study of electromagnetic spectrums mind control weapons and global surveillance equipment. This book tells the true story that during her horrible period in the grave, her soul was waylaid, but God answered her cries, and gave her love and support. Losing her life to find God was a true consolation and brought joy to her soul and gave her the strength to be a soldier rather than a victim. She worked hard to seek justice by exposing these horrible crimes to the public, which - if not exposed and publicized - in the future humanity would no longer know the meaning of physical inviolability and privacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Different from previous researches weighted toward historical description and individual writer and work, this book establishes a general analytical system and a multi-angled methodology to examine Chinese literature. In ancient China, there was no definite concept of pure literature. Considering both modern ideas of literature and the corresponding traditional concept, this book broadly discusses Shi and Fu poetry, Ci poems and Qu verses, novels and essays. The four chapters deal with the origins, evolutions, structures and styles of the various genres respectively, analyzing some representative works. It's worth mentioning that the book is written from an individual perspective. Based on his own appreciation as a reader, the author expresses the depth of his various related impressions on Chinese literature. In addition, it conveys many fresh points of views, which will enrich and inspire related researches. This book will appeal to scholars and students of Chinese literature and comparative literature. People who are interested in Chinese literature and Chinese culture will also benefit from this book.
