Book excerpt: The increasing number of refugees, asylum seekers, and irregular migrants poses a challenge for mental health services in Europe. This review found that these groups are exposed to risk factors for mental disorders before, during, and after migration. The prevalence of psychotic, mood, and substance-use disorders in these groups varies but overall resembles that in the host populations. Refugees and asylum seekers, however, have higher rates of post-traumatic stress disorder. Poor socioeconomic conditions are associated with increased rates of depression five years after resettlement. Refugees, asylum seekers, and irregular migrants encounter barriers to accessing mental health care. Good practice for mental health care includes promoting social integration, developing outreach services, coordinating health care, providing information on entitlements and available services, and training professionals to work with these groups. These actions require resources and organizational flexibility.

Book excerpt: Storytelling is an essential tool for reporting and illuminating the cultural contexts of health: the practices and behavior that groups of people share and that are defined by customs, language, and geography. This report reviews the literature on narrative research, offers some quality criteria for appraising it, and gives three detailed case examples: diet and nutrition, well-being, and mental health in refugees and asylum seekers. Storytelling and story interpretation belong to the humanistic disciplines and are not a pure science, although established techniques of social science can be applied to ensure rigor in sampling and data analysis. The case studies illustrate how narrative research can convey the individual experience of illness and well-being, thereby complementing and sometimes challenging epidemiological and public health evidence.

Book excerpt: Published in 1996: Environmental Epidemiology: Exposure and Disease is a unique resource identifying priorities for public health research in selected areas of environmental epidemiology. Drawn from the proceedings of an international workshop on this topic, the book is a compilation of the specialized knowledge and opinions of environmental epidemiology experts. Organized by the Rome division of the World Health Organization (WHO) European Centre for Environment and Health, the goal of the 1993 workshop, Setting Priorities in Environmental Epidemiology, was to establish a consensus among the experts in the selected areas. The chapters in Environmental Epidemiology: Exposure and Disease cover environmental epidemiology from three different viewpoints: environmental exposures, major disease groups related to the environment, and epidemiological methodology. The environmental exposure categories examined for prioritizing are air contaminants, water contaminants, and ionizing and non-ionizing radiation exposure from human-caused disasters. .

Based on a scoping review this report concludes that current investment policies and practices (doing business as usual) are unsustainable with high costs to individuals families communities societies the economy and the planet. Frameworks and processes that are actively shaping health promotion in settings in the 21st Century are documented and the ideas and research covered will provide a vital set of indicators for those who promote health in settings. Combining theory with practical examples and case studies, the authors show how a settings approach can work in practice, drawing on a range of local, national and international initiatives and coordinated projects. Health Promotion Settings provides a rich source of ideas and case examples which highlight the challenges for promoting health in a range of contexts. Special attention is given to the workplace as both a priority area for health promotion and a key determinant of health. Written by a highly experienced team of health promotion and public health professionals, academics and researchers, this book is essential reading for both students and practitioners working towards the improvement of health using a settings approach. Book excerpt: This book analyses European foreign policy as the activity of the European Union (EU) as a global actor and explores its efforts to raise its visibility in Southeast Asia through its relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Myanmar. Contributors examine the EU’s engagement in a process of dynamic consolidation of its relationship with Asia and the Pacific region. They shed light on how interregional relations with ASEAN and interactions with Myanmar can be viewed as a perfect opportunity to promote the EU’s presence in the region. Chapters examine the EU’s efforts to inspire Myanmar to connect with security cooperation and Myanmar’s engagement with the EU to diversify its foreign relations with China. The book also explores the extent to which the EU has failed regarding the Rohingya crisis and whether the EU’s effort to support the peace process in Myanmar has been beneficial. A timely and important contribution to the growing literature on the EU’s role in the world and its relations with East and Southeast Asia, this book will be of interest to academics in the field of International Relations, European Politics and Foreign Policy, Comparative Regionalism, East Asian and Southeast Asian Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Origins of UNICEF traces the history of the founding of the world’s most well-known and often controversial relief aid organization for children. UNICEF modeled itself after several national organizations as well as some of the early twentieth-century transnational and international relief aid organizations, catering to a clientele that many observers claimed would be impossible to resist or ignore. In only a few years, UNICEF’s programs provided relief aid to millions of children in locations around the globe, but the atmosphere of post-war cooperation, quickly supplanted by Cold War tensions, caused UNICEF’s efforts to be scrutinized lest they be too closely aligned with either the United States or the Soviet Bloc. UNICEF remains one of the most highly regarded and effective child relief-aid organizations in the world. The story of its founding and its first years as an aid organization provide insight into how an international, apolitical, philanthropic organization must maneuver through political and cultural tensions in order to achieve its goal of mitigating human suffering.

This is the third progress report that WHO is publishing following the first and second reports which were published in 2019 and 2020. In 2018, WHO called for the global elimination of industrially produced TFA by 2023. Since then, countries are responding to this call to action, building global momentum around TFA elimination.
