Download or read book Summary Proceedings of the Conference on Tropical Meteorology written by ARMY ELECTRONICS LABS FORT MONMOUTH N J. and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This confeence on tropical meteorological research was the second in what is planned as an annual review and coordination, under sponsorship of the United States Army Electronics Research and Development Laboratories. The first conference, in 1962, was essentially for the purpose of planning a broad program in tropical meteorology and reviewing the then state-of-the art. In order to keep the 1963 conference relatively informal and permit maximum flexibility, the speakers were not requested to prepare or submit written copies of their presentations, although several did so. The majority of the presentations and the ensuing discussions which appear in this report were transcribed from tape recordings made during the conference. They are essentially verbatim, although certain liberties have been taken by the editors in an attempt to improve sentence structures that seem acceptable to the ear, but become involved and unwieldly in print. Also, a number of references to slides, blackboard notations, etc., which are not available for publication, have been eliminated or reworded. (Author).

Book Synopsis Hurricanes by : Roger A. Pielke, Sr.
Download or read book Hurricanes written by Roger A. Pielke, Sr. and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Losses to hurricanes in the 1990s total more than those incurred in the 1970s and 1980s combined, even after adjusting for inflation. This has led many to mistakenly conclude that severe hurricanes are becoming more frequent. In fact, according to recent research, the past few decades have seen a decrease in the frequency of severe storms and 1991 to 1994 was the quietest in at least 50 years. It does mean, however, that the world today is more vulnerable to hurricane impacts than it has ever been, which represents a serious policy problem. This book defines and assesses the hurricane problem, focusing primarily on the United States, in order to lay a foundation for action. The concept of vulnerability is used to integrate the societal and physical aspects of hurricane impacts. The book is unique in that it seeks to address both the scientific and societal aspects of hurricanes. While it focuses on the United States, it is intended to illustrate weather related impacts assessment that could be applied in other areas, and for phenomena other than hurricanes. More broadly, this book seeks to illustrate the beneficial uses (as well as limitations) of hurricane science to society. Explicit consideration of the relationship between science and society is much needed in an era when scientific research is under public and political pressure to demonstrate a better connection with societal needs.

Book excerpt: A special edition of Jaws by Peter Benchley reissued with a bright retro design to celebrate Pan's 70th anniversary. It was just another day in the life of a small Atlantic resort until the terror from the deep came to prey on unwary holiday makers. The first sign of trouble - a warning of what was to come - took the form of a young woman's body, or what was left of it, washed up on the long, white stretch of beach . . . A summer of terror had begun. Peter Benchley's Jaws first appeared in 1974. It has sold over twenty million copies around the world, creating a legend that refuses to die - it's never safe to go back in the water . . .
