Book excerpt: This memorandum summarizes information on refractory materials and composites that was presented at the Thirteenth Meeting of the Refractory Composites Working Group in Seattle, Washington on July 18-20, 1966. The memorandum is based on 34 papers that were presented at the meeting. They are reviewed and discussed briefly within the framework of the following four broad areas: materials technology, process technology, specific hardware applications and tests, and evaluation techniques. Included in the section on materials technology are discussions dealing with bulk refractory materials, coated systems, and fiber-reinforced composites. The section on process technology discusses cladding and general fabrication processes. The specific hardware applications and tests cover rocket-motor components, and cladding of a probe used in the glass industry. The section on evaluation techniques covers thermal testing, and non-destructive testing. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report summarizes information on refractory composites for use above 2500 F, as presented at the Seventh Meeting of the Refractory Composites Working Group, held March 12-14, 1963. Reports presented at the meeting were concerned with pro tective coatings, insulating ceramics, materials for rocket thrust chambers, dispersion strength ening of metals, joining of refractory materials, and testing techniques. Emphasis in the field of coatings for refractory metals has shifted from the rudiments of developing oxidation-resistant coatings to improvement and advanced evaluation of coatings to predict their utility for re-entry vehicles. Book Synopsis Arc Plasma Technology in Materials Science by : Dennis A. Gerdeman
Download or read book Arc Plasma Technology in Materials Science written by Dennis A. Gerdeman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although a considerable amount of information concerning the applications for arc plasmas in the materials sciences is available, it is contained in literally thousands of separate manuals, technical notes, textbooks, and government and industrial reports. Each source generally deals with only one specific application or, at best, a narrow range of utilization. This book was developed to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date compilation of information in the technology of arc plasma utilization. The book is divided into two general categories: flame spraying and materials evaluation. In the flame spraying section a comprehensive review of the plasma spraying process is presented. The design and operation of plasma spraying equipment are described. Included are a description of the nature of a plasma, and the design and operation of plasma generators, powder feed systems and accessory control equip ment. The general process procedures, and associated process variables are de scribed. Particular emphasis is given to the particle heating process and the mechanisms for adherence and cohesion of coatings. Competitive flame spraying equipment is also detailed (combustion process, detonation and electric arc) and compared with the plasma spray process. A discussion and compilation of flame sprayed ceramic and metal materials, their properties and applications are also included.

Book Synopsis Coatings of High - Temperature Materials by : H. H. Hausner
Download or read book Coatings of High - Temperature Materials written by H. H. Hausner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The properties of materials depend on the characteristics of the bulk and on those of the surf ace. Any change in surface characteristics affects a wide variety of material properties. During the last few years the role of surface phenomena in metallurgy has been the subject of many studies. Surface energy, surface tension, the activity of surfaces, and related problems are under discussion in the western world * as well as in the eastern world. t The relation between volume and surface properties in metals and alloys has been investigated and is still under investigation. Materials are frequently exposed to environments which change their physical and chemical characteristics on account of a reaction going on between the material surface and the environment. The science and technology of surface preparation ro improve material properties have gained importance during the last decade in many parts of the world. Main efforts have been concentrated especially on the coating of material surfaces in connection with the exposure of these materials to space en vironment.
Book Synopsis Preparation and Properties of Fiber-reinforced Structural Materials by : D. E. Price
Download or read book Preparation and Properties of Fiber-reinforced Structural Materials written by D. E. Price and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metallic fibers in the form of whiskers, chopped fine wire, or wool have been incorporated into metallic matrices by two principal methods: classical powder-metallurgical methods, and infiltration of the fibers with molten matrix metal. Ceramic fibers, notably alpha-A1203, have been used as whiskers or wool for reinforcing metallic matrices, the methods of preparation of the composite being the same as with metallic fibers. When metallic fibers are used to reinforce ceramics, the ceramic is either slip cast into the fiber mat and dried, or a mixture of the fiber and ceramic is hot pressed. Plastics and elastomers are combined with fibers by several methods, for example, dipping a sintered skeleton of the fibers into liquid Teflon. Several programs have resulted in combinations which show that reinforcement of metals by either metallic or alpha-A1203 fibers is possible. Both the room-temperature and elevatedtemperature tensile properties of the composite seem to increase linearly with the volume fraction of the fiber phase. (Author).

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Magnesium Alloys by : John B. Hallowell
Download or read book An Introduction to Magnesium Alloys written by John B. Hallowell and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the characteristics and properties of existing commercial magnesium alloys and compares these relative to each other. Although this report is not intended to serve as a source of design data for magnesium alloys, it was written to provide a simple, up-to-date background of information for the technologist who is faced with the problem of materials selection and who is unfamiliar with the advantages and discaadvantages of magnesium alloys. The eight major alloying elements which are used to control the properties of magnesium are listed along with selected data illustrating the binary phase relationships which exist, between the hexagonal, close-packed structure of magnesium and each of these metals. The nomenclature system for commercial magnesium alloys is explained and compositions and available forms of the alloys are given. Property comparisons of both cast and wrought alloys are presented. There is a section in the report dealing with the joining, forming, and machining of magnesium, and a section devoted to a discussion of a number of finishing systems which have been developed for magnesium alloys.
