Book Synopsis Elasmobranch Biodiversity, Conservation and Management by : Sarah L. Fowler
Download or read book Elasmobranch Biodiversity, Conservation and Management written by Sarah L. Fowler and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2002 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Darwin Elasmobranch Biodiversity Conservation and Management project in Sabah held a three-day international seminar that included a one-day workshop in order to highlight freshwater and coastal elasmobranch conservation issues in the region and worldwide, to disseminate the result of the project to other Malaysian states and countries, and to raise awareness of the importance of considering aspects of elasmobranch biodiversity in the context of nature conservation, commercial fisheries management, and for subsistence fishing communities. These proceedings contain numerous peer-reviewed papers originally presented at the seminar, which cover a wide range of topics, with particular reference to species from freshwater and estuarine habitats. The workshop served to develop recommendations concerning the future prospects of elasmobranch fisheries, biodiversity, conservation and management. This paper records those conclusions, which highlight the importance of elasmobranchs as top marine predators and keystone species, noting that permanent damage to shark and ray populations are likely to have serious and unexpected negative consequences for commercial and subsistence yields of other important fish stocks.

Book Synopsis Historical Perspectives of Fisheries Exploitation in the Indo-Pacific by : Joseph Christensen
Download or read book Historical Perspectives of Fisheries Exploitation in the Indo-Pacific written by Joseph Christensen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The waters of the Indo-Pacific were at the centre of the global expansion of marine capture fisheries in the twentieth century, yet surprisingly little has been written about this subject from a historical perspective. This book, the first major study of the history of fishing in Asia and Oceania, presents the case-studies completed through the History of Marine Animal Populations (HMAP) initiative. It examines the marine environmental history and historical marine ecology of the Indo-Pacific during a period that witnessed the dramatic escalation of industrial fishing in these seas.

Book Synopsis Overview of World Elasmobranch Fisheries by : Ramón Bonfil
Download or read book Overview of World Elasmobranch Fisheries written by Ramón Bonfil and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1994 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major world fisheries for elasmobranchs are described in regard to their importance, recent trends, problems for assessment and management, conservation and the outlook for their sustainability. The analysis considers trends and outlooks in FAO's statistical areas, individual accounts of fisheries by the major elasmobranch fishing nations and the high seas fisheries that have significant by catches of elasmobranchs. Information on species, gears, patterns of exploitation, research and management of elasmobranchs is summarized for each of these countries. The general problems in appraising and managing elasmobranch fisheries and the need for conservation are discussed and possible solutions for some of these problems are proposed.

Book Synopsis Review of the Marine Recreational Information Program by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Review of the Marine Recreational Information Program written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is responsible for collecting information on marine recreational angling. It does so principally through the Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP), a survey program that consists of an in-person survey at fishing access sites and a mail survey, in addition to other complementary or alternative surveys. Data collected from anglers through MRIP supply fisheries managers with essential information for assessing fish stocks. In 2006, the National Research Council provided an evaluation of MRIP's predecessor, the Marine Recreational Fisheries Statistics Survey (MRFSS). That review, Review of Recreational Fisheries Survey Methods, presented conclusions and recommendations in six categories: sampling issues; statistical estimation issues; human dimensions; program management and support; communication and outreach; and general recommendations. After spending nearly a decade addressing the recommendations, NMFS requested another evaluation of its modified survey program (MRIP). This report, the result of that evaluation, serves as a 10-year progress report. It recognizes the progress that NMFS has made, including major improvements in the statistical soundness of its survey designs, and also highlights some remaining challenges and provides recommendations for addressing them.

This plan presents a global overview of the status of the dugong and its management throughout its range. It contains information on dugong distribution and abundance, threatening processes, legislation, and existing and suggested research and management initiatives for the countries and territories in the dugong’s known range. It is hoped that the comparative information provided will enable individual countries to develop their own, more detailed, conservation plans.

Book Synopsis Sharks and Their Relatives by : Merry Camhi
Download or read book Sharks and Their Relatives written by Merry Camhi and published by IUCN. This book was released on 1998 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharks and their relatives, the rays and chimaeras, are the diverse group of cartilaginous fishes that have evolved over 400 million years. Historically considered of low economic value to large-scale fisheries, today many of these fishes have become the target of directed commercial and recreational fisheries around the world, and they are increasingly taken in the by-catch of fisheries targeting other species. This report emphasizes the widely-acknowledged need to improve shark fishery monitoring, expand biological research and take management action. It serves as an introduction to the ecology, status and conservation of the sharks and their relatives for a general audience. Shark fisheries can only be managed sustainably, and shark populations remain viable, with the introduction of new conservation and management initiatives.
