Book excerpt: Excerpt from Summary of Illinois Soil Investigations The wealth of Illinois is in her soil, and her strength lies in its intelligent development - drawer. The purpose of this bulletin is to summarize the results of the soil investigations which have been carried on by the Illinois Agri cultural Experiment Station, in order that the farmers and landown ers may know of the progress being made, and thus hasten the adop tion of systems of farming that will increase and permanently main tain the productive capacity of Illinois soils, instead of decreasing their fertility, as is done under the most common practices. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crop Yields From Illinois Soil Experiment Fields in 1933: Together With a General Summary for the Four-Year Period Ending in 1933 Soil management and treatment practices properly employed can do much to reduce variation in soil productivity and to uncover latent productivity that may exist. No single system of management or treat ment, however, can be expected to give the best results on all soils. Neither can an effective system at a particular time be expected to give the best results on a particular soil for all time to come. Systems of management and treatment must be adapted to the widely differing nature of soils. Broadly speaking, farmers are interested in the simplest system that will give the most satisfactory results. In order to test the effectiveness of different systems of soil treat ment on the yields of farm crops, the Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station for a number of years has conducted field investigations in many sections of the state on extensive soil types differing widely in productiveness. Some investigations along this line have been in progress at Urbana since 1876; the first of the present outlying soil experiment fields were established in the fall of 1901. Some of the original fields are still in operation; some have been discontinued at one time or another for various reasons. During the crop season of 1932 twenty - six fields were in Operation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Response of Illinois Soils to Limestone A wide diversity of soil conditions and soil types is represented by the Illinois soil experiment fields, tho the types can be classified into ten general groups. The general characteristics of those soils, together with some information about their natural productiveness, certain of their chemical qualities, and the limestone applications made to them are outlined' in Tables 1 and 3. The groups are arranged in descending order according to their natural productivity, a sequence which is maintained thruout this publication. During the early years of these experiments no attempt was made to obtain detailed information about the character of the soils on which the fields were located. Only the general nature of the fields that were discontinued is therefore known. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Crushed limestone is applied initially at the rate of 4 tons an acre, and thereafter once during the rotation, at the annual rate of pounds an acre on the plowed soil. The application is usually made just ahead of wheat seeding. In the experiments here reported no lime stone has been applied since 1923. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Moisture Survey of Some Representative Illinois Soil Types Although the energy concept of soil moisture provides agricultural workers with an extremely useful means of understanding and evaluating agronomic and engineering practices, it is not feasible at the present time to measure the soil moisture characteristics for every soil type. The more practical solution is to make such measurements on representa tive soil types and to project the information obtained to closely Related soils. Distinguishing features, such as soil structure and textural class which are amenable to mapping in the field, can be used to place soil types into groups that are nearly alike.
