Sample Book Insights: #1 Andrea Yates was a nurse who had her first mental breakdown in 1999. She was treated by a psychiatrist, who advised her to not have any more children as this would lead to future psychotic episodes. Against the advice of her doctor, Andrea conceived her fifth child. #2 On June 20, 2001, Andrea Yates drowned her five children. She called 911 and spoke in a calm and unemotional voice. She did not sound out of breath, yet portions of the 911 recording indicated that heavy breathing could be heard. #3 After the investigation, the officers took photos. They found small footprints in the hallway, and the water in the tub was still 9 inches deep. They found medications in the kitchen, including Effexor, Remeran, Wellbutrin, and Resperidol, which is an antipsychotic medication. #4 The trial of Andrea Yates began on February 18, 2002. Her religious beliefs about Satan and her severe history of mental illness were challenged when she pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the deaths of Noah and John, but not for the deaths of Paul and Luke. In Texas, anyone convicted of multiple murders or the killing of an infant is eligible for the death penalty.

This collection of "Filicidal Killers" provides a gripping overview of how things can go horribly wrong in once-loving families. Parents Who Killed their Children depicts ten of the most notorious and horrific cases of homicidal parental units out of control. People like--Andrea Yates, Diane Downs, Susan Smith, and Jeffrey MacDonald--who received a great deal of media attention. The author explores the reasons; from addiction to postpartum psychosis, insanity to altruism, revenge and jealousy. Each story is detailed with background information on the parents, the murder scenes, trials, sentencing and aftermath. PUBLISHERS WEEKLY - "{A} valuable resource and reference book for Criminologists and Psychologists on the fraught subject of maternal filicide, supported with ten case studies. A clear-eyed view on the most heartbreaking of crimes." SUSPENSE MAGAZINE - "Parents Who Kill Their Children is a great read for aficionados of true crime. The way the author laid the cases out made the hair on the back of my neck stand up." INSIDE THE BOOK Andrea Yates Darlie Routier Susan Eubanks Lianne Smith Alan Bristol Jeffrey MacDonald Deanna Laney Susan Smith Tonya Thomas Diane Downs "Acclaimed true crime author, RJ Parker, has a knack for collecting high-profile cases under specific themes. This collection about parents who kill their children provides a fast-paced, gripping overview of how things can go horribly wrong in once-loving families. From Andrea Yates to Jeffrey MacDonald to Susan Smith, Parker reports on the stunning case details and suggests reasons why the parental bond can get so twisted. The updates at the end of each chapter add a lot, since popular media rarely follows up. An important reference for true crime readers." -- (Dr. Katherine Ramsland, Ph.D.), bestselling author of "The Mind of a Murderer" and "The Ivy League Killer." "Is there anything more reprehensible than filicide--that is, the intended act of a parent killing his or her own child? In "Parents Who Killed Their Children," the award-winning true crime author RJ Parker shines a powerful light on this dark and sordid phenomenon. First, Parker offers a number of possible psychological and environmental causes (or at least correlates) of filicide. Then he presents ten shocking, real life case histories of parents who murdered their children. The result is a book that is bound to make you rethink the absolute sanctity of motherhood and reflect on why some mothers do indeed "eat their young." This is a powerful read and another hard-hitting, compelling entry by RJ Parker." -- (Dr. Scott Bonn, Ph.D), criminologist, professor and author of the forthcoming "Why We Love Serial Killers" NOTEWORTHY This book has been selected by several Universities in their upcoming courses in Criminology, Sociology and Forensic Psychology, including, the University of Utah and Penn State University. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On November 6, 2001, Dr. Andrew Bagby was found dead in a parking lot for day use at Keystone State Park in Derry Township, Pennsylvania. He had been shot to death. There were five gunshot wounds as well as blunt force trauma to the back of the head. He had been shot in both the face and chest as well as the back of the head, back and buttocks. He was left face down in the parking lot in his scrubs, next to his Toyota Corolla. He died there. The bizarre murder case of Andrew Bagby entails far more than death, although it has that threefold. It also brought to light a woefully inept Canadian legal system and the frighteningly dark mental descent of a woman scorned. While evidence was steadily mounting against her, Dr. Shirley Turner dropped everything, left her car, apartment and every worldly possession, and went back to Canada. By the time Pennsylvania had an open warrant on her, she was in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. There, she gave birth to Andrew's son, Zachary. While in jail, she wrote to a judge. Against legal precedent, this judge wrote her back and gave her legal advice on how to proceed with her case. The United States presented evidence of her crimes and their investigation and findings thus far. It was overwhelming. Her lies were exposed, her gun casings matched and witnesses placed her car next to his at the time of the murder. What happened next is one of the strangest decisions in legal history.

Book excerpt: As morbid as it is to fathom, for some, it is easier to be intimate with a corpse than a live human being. People with this sexual preference, or necrophiliacs, have admitted that the absence of emotion or social expectation, or the ability to exert absolute control over a corpse has made sexual relations more satisfying. Other necrophiliacs have admitted to many other reasons why they prefer to engage in sexual acts with the dead. Intercorpse explores this paraphilia in detail. It includes the categories of necrophilia, motivations for this deviant sexual behaviour, and several true accounts of individuals who are infamous necrophiliacs. Serial killers like Gary Ridgway would often return to the dump sites of his victims to have sex with their decomposing bodies while they rolled in maggots. Others like Edmund Kemper admitted to getting pleasure from further degrading his victims. This book takes a fearless look at a most disturbing topic. It will be of interest to those in criminal psychology, sexual deviance, and forensic psychology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delves into the twisted psychology of women attracted to some of the most notorious monsters on the planet, giving true crime readers real insight into this phenomena One of the most common reasons given by women who date serial killers is the fact that they ‘see’ the little boy that the horrible man once used to be, and they believe that they can nurture that kid, hence removing the cruel and harmful nature of the killers and making them amicable again. Known as ‘serial killer groupies’ or even ‘prison groupies’ by some, a great number of these women have shown a surprising desire to get connected to the serial killer of their choice. A large number of these women have become directly aligned with these killers, and some have even married these hardened criminals. Groupies will do almost anything to get close to the prisoner that they are attracted to. They give up jobs, family, spend money on him, and even move across country to be in the same town as him. Some SKG's are attracted to the celebrity status they acquire. They go on talk shows to announce their undying love for the serial killer and proclaim that he was not capable of these killings. This book depicts several such cases and you'll meet some of these SKG's. "If you seek to understand or study the unexplainable, this book may be your key to some grasp of what is beyond imagining....why some women love serial killers!" -- (Bernard Lee DeLeo), bestselling author of over twenty-five novels "The obsessed groupies of predators such as Richard Ramirez (The Night Stalker) are just as fascinating as the serial killers they love. Best-selling author RJ Parker offers powerful insights into the needs, motivations and dark desires of women who pursue and sometimes marry the most infamous killers in history. This powerful psychological examination of these women is not to be missed. Well researched, Parker sheds new light on the curious sub-culture of groupies in his new true crime book, SERIAL KILLER GROUPIES" -- (Scott Bonn, PhD) Professor, criminologist and author of Why We Love Serial Killers: The Curious Appeal of the World's Most Savage Murderers

Book excerpt: In the autumn of 1888, a serial killer known as Jack the Ripper stalked the East End of London. He was never identified, but hundreds of people were accused. Some were known to the authorities at the time, and others were named by later researchers. The truth about them, and the reasons why they came under suspicion, is often lost in a plethora of opinions and misinformation. For the first time, this book presents the evidence against 333 suspects. They include the publican who painted his dog, the first woman sentenced to the electric chair, the writer of the Red Flag, the man with a thousand convictions, Britain’s oldest Prime Minister, and many others. People from all walks of nineteenth century life, representing many different nationalities and professions. United by a link, however tenuous, to the most famous murderer in history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two centuries, many aspects of criminal behavior have been investigated. Finding this information and making sense of it all is difficult when many studies would appear to offer contradictory findings. The Handbook of Crime Correlates collects in one source the summary analysis of crime research worldwide. It provides over 400 tables that divide crime research into nine broad categories: - Pervasiveness and intra-offending relationships - Demographic factors - Ecological and macroeconomic factors - Family and peer factors - Institutional factors - Behavioral and personality factors - Cognitive factors - Biological factors - Crime victimization and fear of crime Within these broad categories, tables identify regions of the world and how separate variables are or are not positively or negatively associated with criminal behavior. Criminal behavior is broken down into separate offending categories of violent crime, property crime, drug offenses, sex offenses, delinquency, general and adult offenses, and recidivism. Accompanying each table is a description of what each table indicates in terms of the positive or negative association of specific variables with specific types of crime by region. This book should serve as a valuable resource for criminal justice personnel and academics in the social and life sciences interested in criminal behavior.

Book excerpt: When the first edition of Pediatric Psychopharmacology published in 2002, it filled a void in child and adolescent psychiatry and quickly establishing itself as the definitive text-reference in pediatric psychopharmacology. While numerous short, clinically focused paperbacks have been published since then, no competitors with the scholarly breadth, depth, and luster of this volume have emerged. In the second edition, Christopher Kratochvil, MD, a highly respected expert in pediatric psychopharmacology, joins the outstanding editorial team led by Dr. Martin and Dr. Scahill. In the new edition, the editors streamline the flow of information to reflect the growth in scientific data since the first edition appeared. The overall structure of the book remains the same, with major sections on underlying biology; somatic interventions; assessment and treatment; and special considerations.
