Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series of books, which is published at the rate of about one per year, addresses fundamental problems in materials science. The contents cover a broad range of topics from small clusters of atoms to engineering materials and involves chemistry, physics, materials science and engineering, with length scales ranging from Ångstroms up to millimeters. The emphasis is on basic science rather than on applications. Each book focuses on a single area of current interest and brings together leading experts to give an up to date discussion of their work and the work of others. Each article contains enough references that the interested reader can access the relevant literature. Thanks are given to the Center for Fundamental Materials Research at Michigan State University for supporting this series. M. F. Thorpe, Series Editor E mail: thorpe@pa. msu. edu V PREFACE This book records invited lectures given at the workshop on Physics of Manganites, held at Michigan State University, July 26 29, 1998. Doped manganites are an interesting class of compounds that show both metal insulator and ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transitions at the same temperature. This was discovered in the early 1950s by Jonker and van Santen and basic theoretical ideas were developed by Zener (1951), Anderson and Hasegawa (1955), and deGennes (1960) to explain these transitions and related interesting observations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first translation into English of Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s acclaimed comedy Der Unbestechliche. The Incorruptible Servant is a true comedy of action, a well-constructed, fast moving stage play cast in a traditional mould. The action is controlled by a dominant central figure of a complex make-up, somewhat reminiscent of Tartuffe but closer in portraiture to Dostoevsky’s Foma Fomich in The Village of Stepanchikovo. Theodor is cast as the masterful servant in an aristocratic Austrian country estate in the year 1912. He acquires full control of the household and cunningly manipulates his philandering young master and his mistresses in a plot set out to restore order and morality. The comedy shows the mature Hofmannsthal at the height of his achievement as a dramatist.

Book excerpt: A strategic guide to building a more democratic and egalitarian future Why is our society so unequal? Why, despite their small numbers, do the rich dominate policy and politics even in democratic countries? Why is it so difficult for working people to organize around common interests? How do we begin to build a more equal and democratic society? Vivek Chibber provides a clear and accessible map of how capitalism works, how it limits the power of working and oppressed people, and how to overcome those limits. The capitalist economy generates incredible wealth but also injustice. Those who own the factories, hotels, and farms always have an advantage over the people who rely on that ownership class for their livelihoods. This inequality in power and income is reflected in the operation of the state, where capitalists are able to exert their will even under relatively democratic conditions. The most important reason is that states depend on the employment and profits from capitalist enterprise for both finances and legitimacy. Every meaningful victory for working people has been won through collective struggle but collective action is very difficult to coordinate. In the final section of the book, Chibber walks the reader through some of the historical attempts to build socialism and presents a vision of how we might, perhaps against the odds, build a socialist future.

Conscious and unconscious biases influence judgements, perceptions, decision making and actions, and societal awareness has now turned the spotlight on how higher education (HE) is addressing bias at institutional and individual levels. The urgency to do so is evidenced through recent studies which reveal the extent of the effects of discrimination and exclusion experienced by individual students, groups of students and members of staff. It can be difficult to know where to start and how to sustain effective impact to achieve inclusion, equity and equality of opportunity. This book offers informed and practical strategies for raising awareness of bias in teaching, learning and assessment practices and provides approaches to eliminate, limit and mitigate the negative effects of bias on university students.

Book excerpt: My name is Everly Dupree and when my marriage fell apart, I did what every normal, red-blooded woman does… I moved back to my hometown and bought a haunted house for the back taxes. Okay, I realize I might have been a bit hasty, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. Then again, so did staying at the Bide A Way Motel until a dead body turned up in the next room. All I wanted was to come home, find a job and start a new life. I didn't plan on getting tied up in the afterlife. Or of solving a murder, but here's what I learned: You might not believe in ghosts, but sometimes they believe in you.

Book excerpt: THE ART OF MASAMUNE SHIROW VOLUME 1: MANGA by Jeremy Mark Robinson This is a study of the art of Masamune Shirow (real name Masanori Ota, b. 1961, Kobe, Japan), a Japanese artist best known for Ghost In the Shell, Appleseed and Dominion: Tank Police. Masamune Shirow is one of the great creators in the world of Japanese manga and animé - his works have been the basis of several important franchises. Shirow's art is marked by futuristic, cyber-punk settings, fabulous, often eccentric designs, elaborate mecha (such as tanks and mobile suits), attractive warrior women and detailed storytelling (accompanied by his famous, sometimes arcane notes). The Art of Masamune Shirow includes chapters on Shirow's signature works, Appleseed and Ghost In the Shell, and his lesser-known comics, such as Dominion: Tank Police, Orion, Black Magic and Neuro Hard; a biography; Shirow's relation to the Japanese manga industry; and themes such as cyberculture and cyber-punk fiction. The Appleseed comic and the three Ghost In the Shell comics are explored chapter by chapter. Fully illustrated, including many images from Masamune Shirow's whole output, the neglected comics, and Shirow's other works in print publishing, such as the Intron Depot series. The Art of Masamune Shirow is published in three volumes: Volume 1: Manga Volume 2: Animé Volume 3 Erotica Hardcover - full colour laminate cover. Bibliography, resources and notes. 384 pages. www.crmoon.com

He didn't want to hear her out back then, and now he was here, in London, where she managed to build a life for herself and her daughter. She spent all this time despising him, and for a good reason. He's last words to her, still echoing in her mind after all these years, "You're a whore, a witch, I never want to lay eyes on you again." Seem like a wound that would never heal. But seeing him again now made her realise that the heart and mind weren't always on the same page, never mind the body.

Book excerpt: Dzikamayi Chando was born and raised in Gweru, Zimbabwe. Some of his works appear in several online literary publications and Cremation of the Scarecrow is his debut collection. 'Cremation of the Scarecrow is an impressively diverse and generous collection that talks to the truths of blackness, the ghetto experience and plight of poverty, unemployment and drug abuse, dilemma of immigration, identity crisis and discovery of self, depression and death, love and hope, to name but a few. Chando's metaphoric luminosity offers invasively honest perspectives of life as he sees it: "We are lustful angels only here for a one night stand with death, we catch gold fever and comb the dust for death leaping into gloomy mirrors like ghosts muddled by their own darkness." (Gaslighting the Alchemist) Chando's employment of auditory, tactile and visual imagery is second to none. His voice, often ethereal, carries messages transcending lifetimes and realms to deliver powerful instructive memoranda to the unenlightened juvenile and imprudent, the prejudiced gatekeepers, power-hungry fascist dictators and so forth: "This poetry is prophecy of my ancestor's bones falling from his hands like rinsed meteorites spilling out of the nomenclator's mouth his bellow bursting into a trance vibrating in my veins five centuries later... This poetry is DNA- a preserved message on the cusp of a falling sky, a failing realm." (The Reading) Refreshingly, it is Chando's custom to pay homage to women, venerating feminine sacredness, shunning societal norms that disadvantage them, illuminating their mental health challenges and empowering them. In his own words to me, "Women are the grass where two elephants are fighting, victims of their own ignorance in oppressive politics, culture and religion." I find it enchanting that in his poems, Chando often personifies his messages of love and hope as women: "everyone's a poet i'm just the selfish one who took everything from mother's womb these words they bleed to cleanse the place of their origin period" (Womb of the Words) Cremation of the Scarecrow is a honeyed acerbic journey of self-discovery, Chando's overriding missive being, to find your life purpose, you must be able to control the fire.'
