Book excerpt: Designing Your Life by Bill Burnett | Book Summary How does one define a well-lived, joyful life? What does it take to have one? Is it even possible to have one, or change a less successful life for the better? These are the some of the common questions people from all walks of life ask themselves every day. Everyone from successful professionals to entry level graduates ask themselves what defines a life full of satisfaction and joy. Sadly, the answer is not a direct one.Designing Your Life tries to offer another view to the problem. This book is specifically about living life by design. Authors Bill Burnett and Joel Evans believe that anyone can design the life they love and live it to the fullest. The book further pushes forth the view that there isn't one life to live but many, and that the ideals of success and happiness that most people have are not exactly true. The book opens with real-life examples of people who carried the wrong ideals of a well lived and successful life well into the latter part of their life and careers, only stopping to realise something was wrong when a part of them suddenly felt incomplete. The concept of design is not easily understood by everyday folks. Most people think of it from an engineering point of view and imagine it involves the creation of new products, technology, and services. What they never imagine is that design can be used to create new lives. This is the crooked belief that the book sets out to straighten through its explanation of design and the way it can be used to remodel and reframe life and people's views of it.The correlation between designers and their love for problems is examined in another section, with the book attributing the creation of most, if not everything, people use today to designers' ideas of using problems to get day-to-day solutions. Designers are always looking for questions so that they can find answers to their design ideas. Readers learn the concept of reframing and how every common question gets reframed in life design so as to find new and more helpful answers for it. The reframing process is further explained as taking new information about a problem, choosing a new point of view and prototyping it afresh to find new solutions. It is through this process that most design ideas are born.Following their step-by-step approach, the authors continue to introduce the main topic of the book, the Life Design process. They show how it can be used to better the life one's already living or create another one based on mere possibilities. They also explain its reliance on asking questions, researching, and team work. The book also introduces a different type of thinking: thinking like a designer. Before deciding to use the Life Design process, the book provides readers with the five mindsets they are supposed to have and shows how they are best applied. "Essentialism" Overview Greg McKeown cuts through the jargon of productivity literature to remind his readers the one thing they are losing sight of in the face of increasing opportunities: no one can have it all. He builds on the personal philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, Steve Jobs, and other iconic personalities to offer insightful, research-backed, and practical tips for taking back control of your life by embracing the power of less. "The Checklist Manifesto" Overview Atul Gawande takes the reader through the chaos of the surgical ward, the intricate design of a skyscraper, and the secretive world of million-dollar investment firms in his search for something everyone is looking for: a solution to information rapidly getting out of control. "Designing Your Life" Overview Design thinking has helped hundreds of their students resolve some of their most pressing problems and dilemmas, and it can do the same for you too. The duo reminds you - with the clarity and assurance that's only the reserve of seasoned instructors - that it's okay if you haven't figured out your life yet because there are multiple lives you could have. "The One Thing" Overview The ONE thing is a dominant theme in the lives of people who have achieved extraordinary success, from iconic business executives to decorated Olympians. The authors contend that success is a sequential process that begins with a deceptively small step: finding the ONE thing that makes everything else easier or unnecessary and doing it exceptionally well. "The Obstacle Is the Way" Overview If you don't want to spend time reading a book about Stoicism, Ryan Holiday has a better option for you. "The Obstacle is the Way" is an excellent self-help book that showcases numerous instances of great people who created history. It is inspiring and motivational, to say the least. Primarily, this book offers advice to turn any obstacle into an advantage. PLEASE NOTE: This is a collection of summaries, analyses, and reviews of the books, and not the original books. "Grit" Overview In this New York Times bestseller, Angela Duckworth takes the reader to the playing field of achievement to demystify exceptional performance and distill success into its bare, learnable components. Duckworth contends that IQ, socioeconomic status, physical ability, and other predetermined qualities do not count for as much as effort, passion, and perseverance in any story of success. She draws from her positive psychology research and from the experiences of "grit paragons" to argue for a theory of success that is as accessible as it is inspirational. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book about the Configurative, Law, Science and Policy Theories looks at law in a more futuristic manner. It involves examining the idea of law in terms of decision and policy rather than simply as rules and principles. The reader will be introduced to a technique known as "contextual mapping" which helps in understanding legal problems in context and in identifying which problems require authoritative and controlling solutions. The book undertakes a careful analysis of modern theories of justice and their relevance to the practice and operation of the law. Although directly relevant to law, this approach to law has broader implications for management, leadership, and decision making as well. Winston P. Nagan is Sam T. Dell Research Scholar and Professor of Law at the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law. In addition, Professor Nagan holds degrees from the University of Oxford, Duke University and his doctorate (JSD) from Yale Law School. He is also an Affiliate Professor of Anthropology, African and Latin American Studies and Director of the Institute for Human Rights, Peace & Development at the University of Florida. He is an Honorary Professor at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, Former Chair of the Board of Amnesty International (USA), and Former President of the Policy Sciences Institute in New Haven, CT. He is a Fellow and Trustee on the Board of the World Academy of Art and Science and a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts (FRSA); the University of Florida gave him the Distinguished International Educator award in 2005. Professor Nagan's articles span four decades and cover various topics including international law, national security law, weapons of mass destruction, human rights, transitional justice, and international development. His most recent writings have focused on the Holocaust and Genocide, the nature of sovereignty, peace in the Middle East. He has also written on professionalism in an age of globalization and the impact of modern communications theory on Human Rights and World Order.
