Book excerpt: Enormous progress has been made in the treatment of chronic renal failure over the last decades. Until the 1950s, chronic renal failure was considered to be an inexorably lethal condition. This is no longer the case. In addition, the disease, severe uremic syndrome, is now extremely rare, if existent at all, in industrialized countries. Physicians of my generation who saw patients hospitalized with hemor raghes, pericarditis, severe anemia, cardiac failure, "malignant hypertension," pruritus, vomiting, generalized edema, and convulsions are particularly grate ful for this progress. I well remember seeing such patients hospitalized in the last days or weeks of their lives and also remember the sense of impotence I suffered for the com plete lack of efficient measures I had at my disposal to manage their condition. Nowadays, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and kidney transplantation allow patients with chronic renal failure to survive for very long periods of time in a satisfactory condition. Why then is there still a sense of dissatisfaction and why should we study dietary management? The drawbacks of dialysis and transplantation are the main reasons, but the certainty that dietary therapy is complementary to dialysis and even better than dialysis in certain conditions, is also very important.

Book excerpt: Exercise immunology is a discipline at the nexus of exercise physiology and immunology that aims to characterise the effects of exercise on the immune system in health and disease. This new edition of Exercise Immunology begins by providing an evidence‐based introduction to the effects that individual bouts of exercise and exercise training have on the characteristics and functioning of the immune system. In addition to introducing the immune system and summarising how different forms of exercise affect the characteristics and functioning of the immune system, this new and fully revised edition will explore exercise immunology in the context of immune ageing, cancer, autoimmune diseases and cardiometabolic disease. In addition, the authors discuss other factors that impact immune health, such as nutrition and environmental stressors, and explain the physiological basis of how exercise changes immune function across the healthspan and lifespan. This book is written by leading exercise immunologists and is structured to provide a suggested curriculum of an exercise immunology degree component. Every chapter includes summaries of current and up‐to‐date research and offers practical guidelines to translate laboratory‐based information into clinical settings. This textbook is essential for any exercise immunology degree component or advanced exercise physiology degree and will be vital reading for students in exercise and biological sciences and clinicians and researchers interested in the therapeutic applications of exercise.

Book excerpt: Chronic Renal Disease comprehensively investigates the physiology, pathophysiology, treatment, and management of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This translational reference takes an in-depth look at CKD while excluding coverage of dialysis or transplantation, which are both well detailed in other textbooks and references. Chapters in the basic science sections are devoted to the scientific underpinnings of the development and progression of CKD, including consideration of different etiologic factors. Chapters in the treatment and management sections are geared towards the most common problems faced by nephrologists in the management of CKD. Each chapter relates specific illnesses to the CKD framework instead of covering only the specific illness. Readers will learn, for example, how the management of CKD in a patient with diabetic nephropathy differs from that of other CKD patients. Chapters indicate which unique complications the reader needs to be aware of when treating a specific patient or disease. Chronic Renal Disease includes a companion web-based question and answer supplement to each chapter. This is a valuable resource to reinforce the content of the chapters. The questions are multiple-choice, clinically focused and include referenced discussions of answers. The questions can be used for medical student, resident and fellow teaching, preparation for board or maintenance of certification examinations, and clinician teaching or conference preparation. - Provides a useful resource to professors who need to create lectures for residents and fellows, and to identify and summarize relevant literature as it relates to various research projects - Includes multiple choice questions and answers, which can be used as a teaching tool for conferences and continuing medical education activities - Includes coverage of classification and measurement, epidemiology, pathophysiology, complications of CKD, fluid / electrolyte disorders in CKD, CKD and systemic illnesses, clinical considerations, therapeutic considerations, and special considerations

Book excerpt: The thoroughly updated Eighth Edition of this classic three-volume work provides the most comprehensive, current, and authoritative information on diseases of the kidney and urinary tract. This clinically oriented reference focuses on diagnosis and treatment of specific diseases, disorders, and complications and incorporates the basic science practicing physicians need to evaluate and manage the disease process. Each of the fourteen sections is written by internationally renowned contributors and provides coverage comparable to a complete book. The first two sections review renal basic science and describe current diagnostic tools. The remaining twelve sections cover various types of diseases, including hypertension, urological problems, and urinary tract concerns. Each disease-oriented section begins with an up-to-date review of pathophysiology and then focuses on specific diseases. This edition has new lead authors for more than 25 chapters, and separate chapters on heart disease and the kidney, liver disease and the kidney, and the nephrotic syndrome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys experiences made with Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) dialysis membranes, ranging from a summary of the most recent experimental and clinical results to an overview of future potentials and new trends in research. Several articles treat the biophysical properties of the membrane, its chemical structure and manufacturing procedures aimed at obtaining hollow fibers suitable for medical purposes. Moreover, various experimental conditions are considered in order to identify the dialytic properties of the PMMA membrane and dialyzer series. In this context, particular emphasis is put on the last generation of PMMA membranes with higher porosity and ultrafiltration capacity. On the more practical side, an overview is given of various clinical conditions in which PMMA membranes are utilized at variable rates of ultrafiltration, blood and dialysate flows. The bio- or hemocompatibility of PMMA membranes is investigated, offering a summary of the blood-membrane interactions during hemodialysis. Furthermore, the importance of these aspects in relation to the chronic dialyzed and the acutely ill patients is highlighted, as well as long-term experiences made with different PMMA membranes. For those interested in the last developments and clinical results achieved with synthetic membranes, this book provides a substantial piece of information valuable either for further research or daily clinical practice.
