Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban life as we know it in the Mediterranean began in the early Iron Age: settlements of great size and internal diversity appear in the archaeological record. This collection of essays offers for the first time a systematic discussion of the beginnings of urbanization across the Mediterranean, from Cyprus through Greece and Italy to France and Spain. Leading scholars in the field look critically at what is meant by urbanization, and analyse the social processes that lead to the development of social complexity and the growth of towns. The introduction to the volume focuses on the history of the archaeology of urbanization and argues that proper understanding of the phenomenon demands loose and flexible criteria for what is termed a 'town'. The following eight chapters examine the development of individual settlements and patterns of urban settlement in Cyprus, Greece, Etruria, Latium, southern Italy, Sardinia, southern France and Spain. These chapters not only provide a general review of current knowledge of urban settlements of this period, but also raise significant issues of urbanization and the economy, urbanization and political organization, and of the degree of regionalism and diversity to be found within individual towns. The three analytical chapters which conclude this collection look more broadly at the town as a cultural phenomenon that has to be related to wider cultural trends, as an economic phenomenon that has to be related to changes in the Mediterranean economy and as a dynamic phenomenon, not merely a point on the map. Wide ranging in its geographical coverage, this volume will be essential reading for scholars and students of archaeology, settlement studies, the archaic period and geographers interested in the history of urban forms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the concept of 'West' and 'East', as held by the ancient Greeks. Cultural exchange in Archaic and Classical Greece through the establishment of Hellenic colonies around the ancient world was an important development, and always a two-way process. To achieve a proper understanding of it requires study from every angle. All 24 papers in this volume combine different types of evidence, discussing them from every perspective: they are examined not only from the point of view of the Greeks but from that of the locals. The book gives new data, as well as re-examining existing evidence and reinterpreting old theories. The book is richly illustrated.

Book excerpt: Addressing topics of production and distribution, iconography, regional studies, and museum collections, this volume sheds new and important light on perspectives in the fields of ancient pottery studies. The articles, substantial and well-illustrated, cover a wide span of time from the Geometric period and into the Roman period, including new results and material from excavations as well as new methodological approaches. The range of vessels and their varieties discussed include Campana A pottery from the southern Levant and the Black Sea areas; Oinotrian-Euboian pottery in a sanctuary context in Timpone della Motta near Sybaris in the Middle to Late Geometric periods; Early Proto Corinthian aryballos in the western Mediterranean; Greek imported and local pottery from the earliest times in Crotone’s history; iconographic history of the myth of Iphigenia from Athens to southern Italian vase-painting; small terracotta figurines from Peloponnesian sanctuaries; anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures on Etruscan impasto vessels; Cypro-Arcaic pottery; and objects – red-gloss relief decorated sherds and Geometric pottery – housed in Danish museum collections. The articles represent recent Danish archaeological research of the Mediterranean and constitute an important contribution to the ongoing international debate on the roles of pottery in ancient societies.

Book excerpt: This volume marks a departure from earlier descriptive archaeological summaries of the Holy Land. Taking an anthropological and socio-economic perspective, many of the leading archaeologists who work in Israel and Jordan today present timely and concise summaries of the archaeology of this region. Chronologically organized, each chapter outlines the major cultural transitions which occurred in a given archaeological period. To explain the processes which were responsible for culture change, a review is made of the most recent research concerning settlement patterns, innovations and technology, religion and ideology, and social organization. The material culture of every period of human history in the Holy Land is explored from the earliest prehistoric hominids, through the Biblical and historical periods and up to modern (20th century) times. Each chapter is accompanied by settlement pattern maps and a plate highlighting the major artifacts which archaeologists use to identify the material culture of the period. In addition, windows are presented which focus on major social issues and controversies such as "The Agricultural Revolution", the "Israelite Conquest of Canaan" and "Ancient Metal Working and Social Change". This volume should provide students and the general reader with a useful reference volume concerning the archaeology of societies which lived and live in the Holy Land.

Book excerpt: For generations, the Royal Library in Denmark has contributed to or published bibliographies within the field of humanities and social sciences. This bibliography of Classical studies is a continuation of P.A. Hansen's Bibliography of Danish Contributions to Classical Scholarship from the Sixteenth Century to 1970 (Copenhagen 1977), continuing up to 1991. It restricts itself to Classical Antiquity, from which follows the exclusion of Theology (comprising works by or on Christian writers in antiquity, as well as the Scriptures), Middle Latin, Byzantine Greek (scholia on classical writers excepted), the Classical tradition, and the ancient cultures outside the classical world.

Book excerpt: Paul Murdock is back! The Vietnam War took away Murdock's ability to walk, but did nothing to diminish his intellect, street smarts, or his win-at-all-costs attitude toward his work as a high-priced private investigator. Bored and divorced (again), Murdock accepts a job tracking down a runaway girl whose idealism has taken her to the rugged plains of Afghanistan. Murdock knows the dangers of operating in that war-torn country, but never expects the case to take him even further from home: to the streets of Moscow. This is not the grim, oppressive capitol of the former Soviet Union, however, but a reborn metropolis awash in new money and old vendettas. One of the forces behind the New Russia turns out to be Ivan Dubrynin; once a major player in the Russian underworld, but now a marked man for betraying his sacred oath to the "Thieves World." Dubrynin offers to help Murdock with his case if, in turn, Murdock agrees to escort Dubrynin and his two granddaughters safely out of the country. No easy task, since Dubrynin is targeted by the Russian Mob, embittered business rivals, and a corrupt police force. The only thing working in Murdock's favor is the assistance of Svetlana Iosha, a former Moscow cop-turned bodyguard, as deadly as she is beautiful. Danger and death lurk around every corner and down every alley, but Murdock prefers risk over boredom.

Book excerpt: This volume represents the first attempt to systematically compare organised crime concepts, as well as historical and contemporary patterns and control policies in thirteen European countries. These include seven ‘old’ EU Member States, two ‘new’ members, a candidate country, and three non-EU countries. Based on a standardised research protocol, thirty-three experts from different legal and social disciplines provide insight through detailed country reports. On this basis, the editors compare organised crime patterns and policies in Europe and assess EU initiatives against organised crime.
