Download or read book The Neurobiological Basis of Suicide written by Yogesh Dwivedi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With recent studies using genetic, epigenetic, and other molecular and neurochemical approaches, a new era has begun in understanding pathophysiology of suicide. Emerging evidence suggests that neurobiological factors are not only critical in providing potential risk factors but also provide a promising approach to develop more effective treatment and prevention strategies. The Neurobiological Basis of Suicide discusses the most recent findings in suicide neurobiology. Psychological, psychosocial, and cultural factors are important in determining the risk factors for suicide; however, they offer weak prediction and can be of little clinical use. Interestingly, cognitive characteristics are different among depressed suicidal and depressed nonsuicidal subjects, and could be involved in the development of suicidal behavior. The characterization of the neurobiological basis of suicide is in delineating the risk factors associated with suicide. The Neurobiological Basis of Suicide focuses on how and why these neurobiological factors are crucial in the pathogenic mechanisms of suicidal behavior and how these findings can be transformed into potential therapeutic applications.

Download or read book Suicide in Children and Adolescents written by Michelle A. Patriquin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the current epidemiology of suicide among children and adolescents, as well as identifying important risk factors and evidence-based treatment options. To accomplish this, this book is organized into two major sections: (1) contributing factors to the emergence of child and adolescent suicide, and (2) evidence-based treatment of child and adolescent suicide. Across studies, researchers discuss risk factors of anxiety, sleep problems, child sexual abuse, and violence perpetration, and conclude with treatment considerations including the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) and safety planning. From this body of work, it is clear that there is an urgent need to better understand and effectively treat child and adolescent suicide. The book will be a great resource for academics, researchers, and advanced students of Psychology, Psychiatry, Medicine, Sociology, Social Work and Youth Studies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive review of the complex, growing mental health challenges faced by culturally diverse populations of children and adolescents.Suicide Among Diverse Youth: A Case-Based Guidebook is the first book of its kind, and is designed specifically to bridge the knowledge and skills gap encountered by most clinicians dealing with youth from diverse cultural backgrounds, particularly those different than that of the clinician. The title begins with two introductory chapters, which cover cultural aspects of suicidality among youth, culturally informed treatment of suicidality with diverse youth, and examples of preventative approaches. These are followed by population specific chapters which cover a broad spectrum of diverse populations, including underserved ethnic and racial populations in the United States, LGBTQ youth, as well as various immigrant populations from Eastern European and Middle Eastern countries. These case-based chapters are structured in a cohesive, easy-to-read format that promotes ease of reference, beginning with a clinical case report, review of literature, unique characteristics and risk factors associated with suicidality, and evidence-based practice provided by the authors from their considerable experience. The authors are often from the same ethnic, racial, or cultural group that they discuss in their writings; providing experiential knowledge where scientific knowledge is lacking. Suicide Among Diverse Youth: A Case-Based Guidebook is a unique resource that offers the clinical material needed to treat diverse adolescent patients with sensitive, intersectional, and culturally-informed care, and will provide an indispensable resource for medical professionals working with, and caring for these patients.

Book Synopsis Efficacy of Suicide Prevention Programs for Children and Youth by : Bing Guo
Download or read book Efficacy of Suicide Prevention Programs for Children and Youth written by Bing Guo and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main focus of this review is to present the findings from primary research that assessed the efficacy/effectiveness of suicide prevention programs on school aged children and youth (i.e., ages 5 to 19 years) including school-based or commmity-based suicide prevention programs An assessment tool developed, pre-tested and modified in other Canadian reviews was used to critically appraise the quality of the published studies. Most of the studies focused on the general student population, while a few studies first categorized students as 'at-risk' or 'in need' before the intervention. Six out of 10 studies were rated as moderate to strong in relation to their methodological quality. Two out of these six studies using similar approaches for risk stratification and delivering intervention programs with similar objectives, showed consistent and encouraging evidence on the effects (for example, decreases in depression, hopelessness, stress, anxiety and anger) of their programs. Despite these findings the overall methodological weaknesses and inconsistent findings from the studies indicate that there is insufficient evidence to either support or not to support curriculum-based suicide prevention programs in schools.

Book Synopsis Contagion of Violence by : National Research Council
Download or read book Contagion of Violence written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-03-06 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past 25 years have seen a major paradigm shift in the field of violence prevention, from the assumption that violence is inevitable to the recognition that violence is preventable. Part of this shift has occurred in thinking about why violence occurs, and where intervention points might lie. In exploring the occurrence of violence, researchers have recognized the tendency for violent acts to cluster, to spread from place to place, and to mutate from one type to another. Furthermore, violent acts are often preceded or followed by other violent acts. In the field of public health, such a process has also been seen in the infectious disease model, in which an agent or vector initiates a specific biological pathway leading to symptoms of disease and infectivity. The agent transmits from individual to individual, and levels of the disease in the population above the baseline constitute an epidemic. Although violence does not have a readily observable biological agent as an initiator, it can follow similar epidemiological pathways. On April 30-May 1, 2012, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Forum on Global Violence Prevention convened a workshop to explore the contagious nature of violence. Part of the Forum's mandate is to engage in multisectoral, multidirectional dialogue that explores crosscutting, evidence-based approaches to violence prevention, and the Forum has convened four workshops to this point exploring various elements of violence prevention. The workshops are designed to examine such approaches from multiple perspectives and at multiple levels of society. In particular, the workshop on the contagion of violence focused on exploring the epidemiology of the contagion, describing possible processes and mechanisms by which violence is transmitted, examining how contextual factors mitigate or exacerbate the issue. Contagion of Violence: Workshop Summary covers the major topics that arose during the 2-day workshop. It is organized by important elements of the infectious disease model so as to present the contagion of violence in a larger context and in a more compelling and comprehensive way.

He also provides an up-to-date review of the controversy surrounding the possible influence of antidepressant medications on suicidal behavior. Within the context of an integrative model of the suicide crisis, Wagner discusses issues pertaining to assessment, treatment, and prevention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Sociology - Children and Youth, , language: English, abstract: This essay summarises the reasons for suicide among children and young adults as well as information articles on how to support persons who attempted suicide. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), Suicide is a serious public health problem that affects even young people. The CDC goes on to state that Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for youth between the ages of 10 and 24 years of age, which results in approximately 4600 lives lost each year. Even with the problematic issue of lives lost, suicide is only one part of the problem; the other half of the problem is suicide attempts. Results from a nationwide survey of youth in grades 9-12 in public and private schooling in the United States found that 16% of students reported seriously considering suicide, 13% reported creating a plan, and 8% reported trying to take their own life in the 12 months preceding the survey. Each year, approximately 157,000 youth between the ages of 10 and 24 receive medical care for self-inflicted injuries at Emergency Departments across the United States.
