This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While most people are familiar with The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, few know that during the last decade of his life Max Weber (1864-1920) also tried to develop a new way of analyzing economic phenomena, which he termed "economic sociology." Indeed, this effort occupies the central place in Weber's thought during the years just before his death. Richard Swedberg here offers a critical presentation and the first major study of this fascinating part of Weber's work. This book shows how Weber laid a solid theoretical foundation for economic sociology and developed a series of new and highly evocative concepts. He not only investigated economic phenomena but also linked them clearly with political, legal, and religious phenomena. Swedberg also demonstrates that Weber's approach to economic sociology addresses a major problem that has haunted economic analysis since the nineteenth century: how to effectively unite an interest-driven type of analysis (popular with economists) with a social one (of course preferred by sociologists). Exploring Weber's views of the economy and how he viewed its relationship to politics, law, and religion, Swedberg furthermore discusses similarities and differences between Weber's economic sociology and present-day thinking on the same topic. In addition, the author shows how economic sociology has recently gained greater credibility as economists and sociologists have begun to collaborate in studying problems of organizations, political structures, social problems, and economic culture more generally. Swedberg's book will be sure to further this new cooperation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1992 Los Angeles riots catapulted the problems of the city back onto the policy agenda. The cauldron of social problems of the city, as the riots showed, offers no simple solutions. Indeed, urban policy includes a range of policy issues involving welfare, housing, job training, education, drug control, and the environment. The myriad of local, state, and federal agencies only further complicates formulating and implementing coherent policies for the city. This volume, while not offering specific proposals to remedy the problems of the city, provides a broad historical context for discussing contemporary urban policy and for arriving at new prescriptions for relieving the ills of the American city. The essays address issues related to public housing, poverty, transportation, and the environment. In doing so, the authors discuss larger themes in urban policy as well as provide case studies of how policies have been implemented over time in specific cities. Of particular interest are two essays that discuss the role of the historian in shaping urban policy and the importance of historical preservation in urban planning.

Book excerpt: The distinguished teachers and historians on the Bradley Commission on History in Schools suggested the basic themes, narratives, topics, and questions essential to the study of United States history, of Western civilization, and of world history. This guide provides teachers, administrators, and parents with principles of selection and suggestions for episodes in history to use as they talk to young children about times, places, and people in history. The guide presents a range of options from which schools and teachers may choose for themselves. It is divided into two broad parts: "Part One: Introduction" ("I. Guidelines for Planning K-4 History Instruction in Schools: Aims and Approaches"; "II. Basic Principles of Selection, and How To Use Them"; "III. Curricular Frameworks for Effective History Education K-12"); and "Part Two: Building a History-Centered K-4 Curriculum" ("I. History in the Early Grades: What Is It and Why Study It?"; "II. Vital Themes and Significant Questions To Be Carried throughout Patterns and across the Grades"; "III. Visualizing a History-Centered Curriculum for Kindergarten through Grade Four"; "IV. History's Habits of Mind: Questions across All Four Course Patterns"; "V. Keys to Developing Historical Literacy at an Early Age: Children's Literature, Biography, Times Lines, Primary Sources"; "VI. Content and Questions within the Course Patterns"; "VII. History and Language Arts"; "VIII. History and Geography"; "IX. History and Science"; "X. A Sample One-Week Lesson Plan"; "XI. A Sampler of Suggested Resources"; "XII. Preparing To Implement This Guide"). (BT)
