Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Observations and Suggestions in Medicine The present volume terminates rather abruptly, because the stipulated number of pages was complete. I especially regret that I could not add a paper on other forms of Irritation besides those noticed in Chapters XLVI and XLVIII. It is a subject known in practice, but little treated Of in books. In a recent case, the ligatures inserted in an operation for lace rated perinaeum induced uterine haemorrhagy, and a state of things resembling and bordering on puerperal mania. The subject must be reserved for a second volume as must also the subject of the sporadic forms Of Puerperal Diseases, as well as some valuable papers by Dr. Tyler Smith, Mr. W. F. Barlow, and several other friends. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suggestion, Its Place in Medicine and Scientific Research: Being a Lecture Delivered on Behalf of the Leigh Browne Trust, at St. Martin's Town Hall, on February 9th, 1897 Admitting that Dr. Wilks' views as to the value of' drugs are distinctly pessimistic, we must still grant the importance of mental influences in relation to the ordinary medical treatment of disease. On this point, however, I shall not dwell further, but will pass at once to the subject of hypnotism. Modern hypnotism undoubtedly owes its origin to mesmerism, and to understand its evolution, a clear conception of mesmeric theories is necessary; of these the views of Esdaile may be regarded as a fair summary. By using smaller type I have been enabled to do this without materially increasing the size of the book or altering the original plan. I trust it is still handy and practical. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatment by Hypnotism and Suggestion: Or Psycho-Therapeutics IN bringing forward this little book on Treatment by Suggestion, I feel that, though I must crave indulgence for the shortcomings of the writer, no apology is necessary for introducing so important a subject. The Nancy treatment has during the last few years attracted so much interest among men of science and members of the medical profession on the Continent, that it seems strange the knowledge of it in this country is almost entirely theoretical. The system of psycho-therapeutics has so far attained its fullest development in Holland, where in every large town it is followed by at least one well qualified practitioner; while in Germany, Russia, Sweden, and, indeed, every European country, its position is secured by the support of leading physicians, and by the success attending their practice. In every country, I believe, the introduction of the system was at first opposed by persons who feared the popularization of so potent an agent but as the beneficial results of the treatment became manifest opposition decreased, and has now almost died out. This is doubtless due chiefly to the fact that the treatment has not been allowed to fall into the hands of ignorant and unqualified practitioners, but has been accepted by men of high character and professional repute. The dangers of hypnotism have been proved chimerical: in proper hands no undesirable medical results can occur through its practice, and there is, I believe, hardly One authenticated case of its being used for a criminal purpose in the countries where it is most frequently employed by medical men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Medicine in Its Salient Features In the closing days of 1917 I was asked to give a course of lectures on the history of medicine. This book is the outcome of my attempt to comply with the request made at that time. The course of lectures, given in the first place in the early weeks of 1918, followed the lines of the present table of contents. My auditors were third-year students in one of the American Schools of Medicine, and the plan of presentation was more or less consciously dictated, at the start, by the recollection of what had challenged my curiosity and aroused my attention about the time I had attained a like standing as a student of medicine. Questions and class discussions evoked by the lectures in 1918 and the three subsequent years suggested, however, certain modifications of the initial treatment of the subject and indicated in what directions additions and elucidations were most desirable. Even at the outset I felt sure that the course would be of greater interest to the men if I could trace the development of medicine, however succinctly, from the earliest times till the present day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Curiosities of Medical Experience IN introducing the Curiosities of Medical Experience to our professional brethren, we cannot, of course, be ex pected either to avouch for the accuracy of statement and inference of the author, or to attempt to prune redundani cies and supply omissions of some of the many topicsof, which he treats. Various and discursive in his themes, he exhibits us, here a melange of fable and fact, without always noting the line of separation, there credulity alter nating with scepticism. To one conversant with the sub ject under discussion, the author sometimes stops short, rather provokingly, at the point where his conclusions might be supposed to become more numerous, and to assume more the character of contemporary history. But though the testimony be inadequate, or the reasoning deficient in closeness of induction, much is suggested to the inquisitive mind for farther thought, and, it may be, not unprofitable application. The Curiosities, even in the parts which most partake of gossiping, will we believe be found amusing to the medical not less than to thean acquaintarice with many of their details, if not for necessary application at least to season and embellish con versation with the sick and the hypochondriacal.
