Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook for Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, and Cambridgeshire: With Map and Plans Since the greater part of this Handbook was in type, it has been officially stated that the number of nnenclosed acres, within the old limits of Epping Forest has been reduced to 3000. This will account for the difl'erence between the statement in Rte. 10, that 7000 acres remain unenclosed, and that in the Introduction, §2, where the true number is given; the former number was adopted from the Parliamentary Report on Royal Forests, printed in 1863. Book Synopsis The Enclosure Maps of England and Wales 1595-1918 by : Roger J. P. Kain
Download or read book The Enclosure Maps of England and Wales 1595-1918 written by Roger J. P. Kain and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-07 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first comprehensive study of the enclosure mapping of England and Wales. Enclosure maps are fundamental sources of evidence in many types of historical inquiries. Although modern historians tend to view these large-scale maps essentially as sources of data on past economies and societies, this book argues that enclosure maps had a much more active role at the time they were compiled. Seen from this perspective of their contemporary society, enclosure maps are not simply antiquarian curiosities, cultural artefacts, or useful sources for historians but instruments of land reorganisation and control which both reflected and consolidated the power of those who commissioned them. The book is accompanied by a fully searchable, descriptive and analytical web catalogue of all parliamentary and non-parliamentary enclosure maps extant in public archives and libraries and offers an essential research tool for economic, social and local historians and for geographers, lawyers and planners.
Download or read book John Kirby's Suffolk written by and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facsimiles of four rare mid-eighteenth-century maps of Suffolk, and early roadbook from the same period. Here, published in facsimile for the first time since the eighteenth century, are John Kirby's extremely rare large-scale Suffolk maps of 1736 and 1737 and the 1735 edition of his road-book The Suffolk Traveller, the earliest single-county roadbook. Those who subscribed for the 1736 map received the 1735 Traveller gratis. The maps of 1764 and 1766 which his sons published after his death are also provided, the former decorated with twelve engravings of castles and abbeys in the county. The earliest maps were the result of a survey of the whole county which Kirby carried out, with some help from Nathaniel Bacon, between 1732 and 1734. Although it is easy to pointto inaccuracies, the hand-coloured maps are highly decorative and correct many of the errors common on earlier Suffolk maps in county atlases. The heraldry on the one-inch maps and the named owners and occupiers of the larger estates provide the basis for new select directories of the county in the mid 1730s and mid-1760s. This work of Suffolk topography includes a biography of John Kirby himself and a full account of the travails of publishing his maps and book. Contributions by JENNY JAMES.
Book Synopsis Suffolk and Nansemond County by : Frances Watson Clark
Download or read book Suffolk and Nansemond County written by Frances Watson Clark and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suffolk and Nansemond County are steeped in a rich heritage and form an extraordinary locality in southeastern Virginia. With a history dating to pre-colonial times, Nansemond County was formed from one of the original shires established by colonists. Many of the first settlers were attracted to the abundant rivers and woods that offered a grand supply of food and sport. They learned to farm the bountiful land and established the crop that would make them famous. The peanut became the cash crop for Suffolk, and it drew the railroads and businesses needed to sculpt the city into a commercial success. This photographic history pays tribute to a brief but important portion of the people and places that comprised what was known as Nansemond County and is now the City of Suffolk. It provides a visual story of a community that has weathered three major fires as well as the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and both World Wars. These images offer readers the chance to experience the ways in which generations of families have lived, worked, and played, and they portray many of the houses and establishments that have been transformed or are completely gone. Look back to the first Peanut Festival in 1941, see how school children dressed in the 1930s, and view Main Street when it was at its height of popularity.
