Book Synopsis The Social Impact of Informal Economies in Eastern Europe by : Manuela Stanculescu
Download or read book The Social Impact of Informal Economies in Eastern Europe written by Manuela Stanculescu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002. In State socialist societies, informal economies were essential for the functioning of the economy as well as for household provision. Since the beginning of social transformation they have been flourishing better than ever before. They are a main outlet on the market for the newly emerging middle classes, stabilize the situation of many workers and pensioners, and in countries on the downward slope they are essential for the survival of large impoverished groups. Presenting recent research on the social importance of informal economies, especially in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Russia, the editors give a short introduction for each country, and a common compilation of basic economic and social data follows in the appendix. Household strategies in the ’shadow’, groups of informal winners and losers, informal employment in town and countryside, outcomes from informal activities, the macro-economic importance of informal economies, and researching methods are all investigated.

Book Synopsis Beyond Balkanism by : Diana Mishkova
Download or read book Beyond Balkanism written by Diana Mishkova and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, western discourse about the Balkans, or “balkanism,” has risen in prominence. Characteristically, this strand of research sidelines the academic input in the production of western representations and Balkan self-understanding. Looking at the Balkans from the vantage point of “balkanism” has therefore contributed to its further marginalization as an object of research and the evisceration of its agency. This book reverses the perspective and looks at the Balkans primarily inside-out, from within the Balkans towards its “self” and the outside world, where the west is important but not the sole referent. The book unravels attempts at regional identity-building and construction of regional discourses across various generations and academic subcultures, with the aim of reconstructing the conceptualizations of the Balkans that have emerged from academically embedded discursive practices and political usages. It thus seeks to reinstate the subjectivity of “the Balkans” and the responsibility of the Balkan intellectual elites for the concept and the images it conveys. The book then looks beyond the Balkans, inviting us to rethink the relationship between national and transnational (self-)representation and the communication between local and exogenous – Western, Central and Eastern European – concepts and definitions more generally. It thus contributes to the ongoing debates related to the creation of space and historical regions, which feed into rethinking the premises of the “new area studies.” Beyond Balkanism: The Scholarly Politics of Region Making will interest researchers and students of transnationalism, politics, historical geography, border and area studies.
Book Synopsis Entangled Histories of the Balkans - Volume Four by : Roumen Dontchev Daskalov
Download or read book Entangled Histories of the Balkans - Volume Four written by Roumen Dontchev Daskalov and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-02-06 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is the last in the Entangled Balkans series and marks the end of several years of research guided by the transnational, “entangled history” and histoire croisée approaches. The essays in this volume address theoretical and methodological issues of Balkan or Southeast European regional studies—not only questions of scholarly concepts, definitions, and approaches but also the extra-scholarly, ideological, political, and geopolitical motivations that underpin them. These issues are treated more systematically and by a presentation of their historical evolution in various national traditions and schools. Some of the essays deal with the articulation of certain forms of “Balkan heritage” in relation to the geographical spread and especially the cultural definition of the “Balkan area.” Concepts and definitions of the Balkans are thus complemented by (self-)representations that reflect on their cultural foundations.

Book Synopsis (Hidden) Minorities by : Christian Promitzer
Download or read book (Hidden) Minorities written by Christian Promitzer and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2009 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book asks why several ethnic and linguistic groups in Central Europe and the Balkans have not yet been legally recognized as national minorities. Some of these hidden minorities have not developed an intellectual elite that can visibly present their identity and claims to the majority population. Other groups are deliberately concealing their existence and language for reasons of self-protection. The chapters in this volume address the everyday mechanisms of hiding and being hidden in the transition zone of these two European regions.

Book Synopsis Cognitive Capitalism and Its Reflections in South-Eastern Europe by : Vladimir Cvijanović
Download or read book Cognitive Capitalism and Its Reflections in South-Eastern Europe written by Vladimir Cvijanović and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cognitive capitalism is considered to be a new stage in the historical evolution of capitalism which is undergoing a metamorphosis affecting most of the laws and tendencies characteristic of industrial capitalism. This raises a series of issues tackled in the theoretical part, especially regarding the increased importance of cognitive work and the new composition of the labour market that influence the determinants of the value of goods, the structure of welfare, and the forms of income distribution. A historical analysis is applied to describe the evolution of cognitive capitalism and its endogenous, potentially destabilising, dynamics. The empirical part analyses the diffusion of cognitive capitalism in the former socialist countries of South-Eastern Europe and elsewhere.
