Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sudden cardiac death is a global health threat for which we have only partial answers. With growing elucidation of the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of sudden cardiac death, better patient identification and treatment options are being developed. These include risk stratification paradigms, ICD therapy, pharmacological options, ablative procedures, and other treatments. This book covers many of these options, including defibrillator technology and clinical applications. It also examines pathophysiological pathways and etiologies as well as highlights risk-stratification in ion channel diseases and structural heart disease such as dilated cardiomyopathy.

Book excerpt: This book draws on the established European guidelines from the ESCthat address the key issues in sudden cardiac death, such asidentifying individuals at risk prior to an episode of aventricular tachyarrhythmia or a sudden cardiac arrest, andresponding in a timely fashion to the person suffering the eventout-of-the-hospital. It presents an update on what is known aboutsudden cardiac arrest, from basic experimental studies to clinicaltrials, and serves as a complement to the ESC Core Syllabus on thissubject. Topics include epidemiology, genetics, arrhythmogenicmechanisms, risk stratification, autonomic nervous system andphenotypes. Disease states and special populations are alsocovered, as well as drug, device and ablation treatments, and costeffectiveness. All chapters are co-authored by experts from bothEurope and the US. The ESC Education Series This book is part of the ESC Education Series. The series isdesigned to provide medical professionals with the latestinformation about the understanding, diagnosis and management ofcardiovascular diseases. Where available, managementrecommendations are based on the established European Guidelines, which encompass the best techniques to use with each cardiacdisease. Throughout the series, the leading international opinionleaders have been chosen to edit and contribute to the books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sudden death in athletes is a global problem. Although it is a relatively rare phenomenon (1/100,000 persons), when it does occur, it is often as an incomprehensible event. In fact, it strikes subjects who presumably should be much healthier than the general population. In the previous 20 years, many authors have studied this problem in an attempt to understand the causes and prevent these events, and it has been determined that, in the vast majority of cases, athletes who die suddenly have an underlying heart disease (arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, coronary anomalies, channelopathies, etc.). In most cases these diseases do not produce major symptoms and do not preclude sports activity even at the highest levels, although they do increase the incidence of sudden death. How to discover these diseases in asymptomatic athletes is a hotly debated issue. In particular, there is controversy as to whether all athletes should undergo detailed medical screening, including electrocardiogram, or whether the costs of this screening are too high in relation to the event incidence. The purpose of this book is to accurately analyze the causes of sudden death in athletes and to provide cardiologists and sports physicians with useful tips on how to identify at-risk individuals.

But when it occurs, especially in a young person, the acute loss can generate a substantial amount of grief with a great sense of disbelief. This mysterious and dreadful condition instils much fear and anxiety into the living, and more specifically for family members and friends. Understandably, the apprehension is brought about by the unexpectedness of the event and uncertainty of the consequences. The feeling of uneasiness is largely attributed to the lack of information regarding this condition. However in recent years, several causes of sudden death have been clarified. Treatment modalities have improved and reduced the occurrence of dying suddenly. This book is meant for anyone who wants to know more about sudden death. It aims to diminish its terror by explaining the various conditions that predispose individuals to sudden death and ways which may prevent it from occurring.

Book excerpt: In Harch of 1980, we organized the first symposium on how to evaluate new antiarrhythmic agents in which the participants included members of the Cardio-Renal Division of the Food and Drug Administration, academic investigators from the United States and Abroad and directors and imple mentors of pharmacological research representing the pharmaceutical industry. By bringing together all three elements, it was hoped that better communication and under standing would ensue to more rapidly bring new cardiac agents to the American public. This goal was important since a rather limited number of antiarrhythmic agents were and are currently available to treat patients with such disorders in the United States. These agents are needed not only for the treatment of patients with sustained ventricular tachyarrhythmias which produce life-threatening hemodynamic consequences but also and in fact more potentially important as a prophylactic measure in the high risk patient subject to sudden cardiac death. This book represents the proceedings of the third of these Symposiums whose purpose was to evaluate the clinical research methodology and models used in the evaluation of ne" antiarrhythmic agents for not only acute therapeutic inter vention but also for the prophylaxis of sudden cardiac death. In addition, new devices have evolved over the past few years that can detect and treat life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias and the evaluation of efficacy and safety of these devices is detailed.

Over the last years, basic and clinical research has greatly contributed to our understanding of the epidemiology, risk factors, preventive measures and therapy for sudden cardiac death. The advent of the new era of human gene discovering has clarified the genetic basis for inherited arrhythmogenic syndromes potentially leading to sudden cardiac death. Primary prevention measures against coronary artery disease have also translated into a decrease of the incidence of sudden cardiac death in adults, and the advent of implantable defibrillators has been proven to reduce mortality in patients at risk. This book has the aim of providing a concise yet comprehensive update on the major advances in the field of epidemiology, genetics and preventive measures for sudden cardiac death.
