Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicinal Chemistry, Volume 18: Myocardial Infarction and Cardiac Death focuses on the prevention and treatment of myocardial infarction. This book explores the synthesis and biological evaluations of hypolipidemic agents. Organized into seven chapters, this volume starts with an overview of the anatomical and functional characteristics of the blood vessels, which is important in understanding the effect on the microcirculation of alterations in blood flow as would occur in myocardial infarction. This text then explores the two serious consequences that result from occlusion of the coronary arteries and the resultant myocardial infarction, namely, the failure of the heart as pump and the development of life-threatening arrhythmias. Other chapters review the medical treatment for primary and secondary prevention of myocardial infarction and sudden death. The final chapter deals with the interventions in the prevention of myocardial infarction, including drug therapy, surgical procedures, and lifestyle modifications. This book is a valuable resource for cardiologists and other health professionals.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the coronary bioresorbable scaffold, a new interventional treatment for coronary artery disease, differentiated from a permanent metallic stent. The book provides an overview of the technology including non-clinical studies and clinical evidences in order to help clinicians understand the appropriate application of the technology and the optimal techniques of implantation. It covers the basics of bioresorbable scaffolds; bench test results; preclinical studies; clinical evidences; and tips and tricks of implantation.

This book was released on 2000-03-31 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first invasive evaluation of cardiac arrhythmias in humans was performed in 1967 in Paris (Prof. P. Coumel) and Amsterdam (Prof. D. Durrer). This was the start of a rapid increase in our knowledge of the diagnosis, mechanism and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. In that same year Prof. Hein J.J. Wellens became cardiologist in the Wilhelmina Gasthuis in Amsterdam. Initially in Amsterdam (1967-1977) and later on in Maastricht (from 1977), he was the driving force for many breakthroughs in clinical cardiac electrophysiology. With an active interplay between the knowledge derived from the 12-lead electrocardiogram and the recordings made with invasive electrophysiology, he composed new ideas leading to major contributions in clinical cardiac electrophysiology and, more generally, in arrhythmology. He published over 650 scientific papers and 14 books, and had numerous functions within scientific boards of prestigious journals. In addition he trained more than 120 cardiologists in clinical cardiac electrophysiology. On the occasion of the congress `2000, Future of Arrhythmology: Lessons From the Past, Promises For Tomorrow', we highlight the scientific work of Prof. Hein J.J. Wellens. A selection of more than 60 articles over the whole time span has been selected. These articles are accompanied by comments from an expert, co-worker and/or former fellow in order to place the paper in a scientific time frame, including the relationship of the author with Prof. Hein J.J. Wellens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sudden death is probably the greatest challenge facing modem cardiology today. This is mainly due to the impact of its brusque appearance and the socioeconomic implications. The incidende is presently decreasing somewhat, mainly due to the decline in new cases of ischemic heart disease on one hand, and to better preven tion in risk patients on the other. Nevertheless, the figures are still high and represent over 300.000 patients per year in the United States alone. This book is an updating of the problem of sudden death from a multifactorial standpoint. It includes not only electrophysiologic data but also covers aspects ranging from epidemiology to prevention. Risk markers and triggering mechanicsms of sudden death are reviewed, with special emphasis on the role of electrical instability, ischemia and depressed ventricular function. The book includes the contributions from many experts, often pioneers in their respective fields. It is our hope that the book serves as an Updating for those cardiologist who are not specialized in these subjects, but may also be of interest to the expert. We wish to express our sincerest gratitude to the authors for sending in their work so promptly, and also Kluwer Academic Publishers for their exactitude and perfection in this edition.

Book excerpt: Following systematic development of technical aspects and physiological understanding, and clinical applicability of cardiac autonomic testing, this book provides a detailed guide to performing individual autonomic tests in both research and clinical settings. The book is structured in three parts covering the physiological background of cardiac autonomic regulations, description of technology and interpretation of individual autonomic tests, and applicability of the individual tests under various clinical circumstances and in defined populations of patients. The book is intended to serve both research and clinical cardiologists as well as research and clinical specialists of other medical fields who use the assessment of cardiac modulations to investigate the autonomic nervous system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a personal viewpoint of the relationship between the occlusive coronary thrombus and acute myocardial infarction based on more than forty years of morphological studies. Most contributions published so far look at only one aspect of ischemic heart disease generally investigated by one method. They ignore the interrelations of all variables which play a role. By contrast, this volume takes a "new" approach and stimulates a critical revision of current thought while suggesting new theoretical avenues of approach.
