Book excerpt: This collection of articles is a game-changer for career and life strategy, goal achievement, self-actualization, and peak performance. The unprecedented BioMaxed methodologies help you to determine your personal formula for a biologically maximized career and life. The result is “paid play,” “paid growth,” and “paid learning” as a way of life. Discipline and the need to push yourself are replaced by the pull of addictive drives and emotional highs. You can accomplish so much more than you ever thought yourself capable by never having to work again. Biomaxing is about more than clichés such as “follow your heart” or “do what you love” or “play to your strengths.” When you discover your formula for maximization, there are extraordinary biological consequences. Your capabilities are extended by nature’s machinery for maximizing all systems for survival. Your capabilities are extended by those of the surrounding biological infrastructure with which we have co-evolved to function. The whole will exceed the sum of the parts. You shift into overdrive. You outperform your known potential. You discover that true human potential relies on an internal-external partnership which you are about to learn to master. New methods of information access become available. New functionality and evolved states emerge. Growth accelerates. Peak experience becomes your new norm. Breakthroughs, epiphanies, and coincidences multiply to catapult you to your goals. One breakthrough can bypass the hundreds of steps required to achieve a goal. One breakthrough may be life-changing, career-changing, and even world-changing. Some of the BioMaxed articles advance the author’s methods of capitalizing on this external maximizing machinery introduced in her best-selling primer, Peak Evolution: Beyond Peak Performance and Peak Experience (2001). The rest apply the author’s methods of exploiting this bio-infrastructure to career-related matters relevant to anyone who has significant goals to achieve. As such, BioMaxed is a must-read for all aspiring worldbuilders and anyone who is driven to leave their most impactful footprint on the world. It’s a revolutionary route to your greatest intrinsic and extrinsic rewards. In fact, it’s a route to a heartfelt goal you may neither have realized you wanted nor was possible: sustained, self-sufficient, self-love through continuous creative self-expression of your essence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New paperback edition The Sung Dynasty (960–1279) has long been recognized as a major watershed in Chinese history. Although there are recent major monographs on Sung society, government, literature, Confucian thought, and popular religion, the contribution of Buddhism to Sung social and cultural life has been all but ignored. Indeed, the study of Buddhism during the Sung has lagged behind that of other periods of Chinese history. One reason for the neglect of this important aspect of Sung society is undoubtedly the tenacity of the view that the Sung marked the beginning of an inexorable decline of Buddhism in China that extended down through the remainder of the imperial era. As this book attests, however, new research suggests that, far from signaling a decline, the Sung was a period of great efflorescence in Buddhism. This volume is the first extended scholarly treatment of Buddhism in the Sung to be published in a Western language. It focuses largely on elite figures, elite traditions, and interactions among Buddhists and literati, although some of the book’s essays touch on ways in which elite traditions both responded to and helped shape more popular forms of lay practice and piety. All of the chapters in one way or another deal with the two most important elite traditions within Sung Buddhism: Ch’an and T’ien-t’ai. Whereas most previous discussions of Buddhism in the Sung have tended to concentrate on Ch’an, the present volume is notable for giving T’ien-t’ai its due. By presenting a broader and more contextualized picture of these two traditions as they developed in the Sung, this work amply reveals the vitality of Buddhism in the Sung as well as its embeddedness in the social and intellectual life of the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bodhidharma, its first patriarch, reputedly said that Zen Buddhism represents "a special transmission outside the teaching/Without reliance on words and letters." This saying, along with the often perplexing use of language (and silence) by Zen masters, gave rise to the notion that Zen is a "lived religion," based strictly on non-linguistic practice and lacking a substantial canon of sacred texts. Even those who recognize the importance of Zen texts commonly limit their focus to a few select texts without recognizing the wide variety of Zen literature. This collection of previously unpublished essays argues that Zen actually has a rich and varied literary heritage. Among the most significant textual genres are hagiographic accounts and recorded sayings of individual Zen masters, koan collections and commentaries, and rules for monastic life. During times of political turmoil in China and Japan, these texts were crucial to the survival and success of Zen, and they have for centuries been valued by practitioners as vital expressions of the truth of Zen. This volume offers learned yet accessible studies of some of the most important classical Zen texts, including some that have received little scholarly attention (and many of which are accessible only to specialists). Each essay provides historical, literary, and philosophical commentary on a particular text or genre. Together, they offer a critique of the "de facto canon" that has been created by the limited approach of Western scholarship, and demonstrate that literature is a diverse and essential part of Zen Buddhism.
