Book excerpt: It is being slowly, but surely, engraved upon the minds and souls of men that years of unexampled industrial productivity and of the accumulation of great wealth are not bringing, and have not brought, happiness to mankind. On the contrary, we are seeing poverty, distress, perplexity, and crime following in the wake of economic prosperity, and the faith of the materialist in gold and silver as the bulwark of a nation is not so strong.-from "When Money Is King and Business Our God"Edward Bok wielded enormous influence during his three-decade tenure as editor of the Ladies Home Journal, a pulpit from which he advocated numerous progressive causes, from women's suffrage and environmental preservation to public sex education and pacifism. Here, in this 1926 book, he issues a passionate call for a new ideal of service to humanity as the foundation upon which our society should be built, a call that still impresses today, in an era of war and natural catastrophe that warrants a concerted national response. Anyone who has felt the urge toward public service will take heart from this inspiring work. Also available from Cosimo Classics: Bok's autobiography, The Americanization of Edward Bok.American Pulitzer Prize-winning author EDWARD W. BOK (1863-1930) also wrote Successward and America Give Me a Chance, among other books.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timothy Shay Arthur (June 6, 1809 - March 6, 1885) - known as T. S. Arthur - was a popular 19th-century American author. He is famously known for his temperance novel Ten Nights in a Bar-Room and What I Saw There (1854), which helped demonize alcohol in the eyes of the American public. His stories, written with compassion and sensitivity, articulated and spread values and ideas that were associated with "respectable middle class" life in America. He also believed greatly in the transformative and restorative power of love as is shown in one of his stories, "An Angel in Disguise". He was also the author of dozens of stories for Godey's Lady's Book, the most popular American monthly magazine in the antebellum era, and he published and edited his own Arthur's Home Magazine, a periodical in the Godey's model, for many years.

Book excerpt: "[...]practical side of life, finding more real enjoyment amid the bustle of the mart than in the quiet of lane or park, the indications are that his nature points him to a business career rather than to a professional calling. If he feels this way, it is well for him to give his developing tastes full play, and follow where his instincts lead him. After a while what was at first a mere instinct or an unformed taste will develop and point him to something definite in the business world, and if he be true to himself he will sooner or later find himself in that particular position which he is best fitted to occupy and fill. His capacities will reveal themselves to him, and they will teach him his limitations. This knowledge need not thwart his ambitions, but I believe that[...]".

Book Synopsis Why I Believe in Poverty Including, Two Persons by : Edward Bok
Download or read book Why I Believe in Poverty Including, Two Persons written by Edward Bok and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2006-10-01 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great financial success Edward Bok achieved as the editor of Ladies' Home Journal-his long and popular tenure lasted from 1889 to 1919-naturally prompted some ire from readers, particularly when he preached economy. So in this 1915 essay, he discusses his own youth in city tenements, scrounging for food and coal, working ceaselessly while other children played... and why he still considered poverty "the richest experience than can come to a boy."Also in this volume is "Two Persons," Bok's tribute to his grandparents, who transformed a barren island in the North Sea into a lovely place to raise their thirteen children and, in the process, charged their heirs with a duty to beautify the world. This little pearl of love and wisdom remains an inspiration to us all to leave the planet a better place than we found it.EDWARD W. BOK (1863-1930) was born in the Netherlands and emigrated to the United States as a child. A champion of progressive issues, he created The American Peace Award in 1923._____________________________________ALSO FROM COSIMO: Bok's The Americanization of Edward Bok, Dollars Only, and Successward: A Young Man's Book for Young Men
