Book excerpt: The World Health Organization defines "Addiction" as the state of physiological or psychological addiction to any psychoactive substance. Substance use has become a global public health problem and situation in India is not different from rest of the world. The epidemic of substance abuse in adolescents has assumed alarming extent in India. However there is no published report on prevalence and pattern of substance use among adolescents from Madhya Pradesh state, India. Information about prevalence and pattern of substance use is essential for planning of intervention programs. Also, when repeated from time to time they provide trends of substance use in a population. Hence, this student substance use survey was conducted with an aim to assess prevalence and pattern of substance use among high school students of Bhopal city, Madhya Pradesh, India. Modified WHO-recommended methodology for student drug use surveys was exercised in the present research. Information about substance use was collected with a self-administered questionnaire.

Book excerpt: Neuropathology of Drug Addictions and Substance Misuse, Volume 2: Stimulants, Club and Dissociative Drugs, Hallucinogens, Steroids, Inhalants and International Aspects is the second of three volumes in this informative series and offers a comprehensive examination of the adverse consequences of the most common drugs of abuse. Each volume serves to update the reader’s knowledge on the broader field of addiction as well as to deepen understanding of specific addictive substances. Volume 2 addresses stimulants, club and dissociative drugs, hallucinogens, and inhalants and solvents. Each section provides data on the general, molecular and cellular, and structural and functional neurological aspects of a given substance, with a focus on the adverse consequences of addictions. Research shows that the neuropathological features of one addiction are often applicable to those of others, and understanding these commonalties provides a platform for studying specific addictions in more depth and may ultimately lead researchers toward new modes of understanding, causation, prevention, and treatment. However, marshalling data on the complex relationships between addictions is difficult due to the myriad material and substances. Offers a modern approach to understanding the pathology of substances of abuse, offering an evidence-based ethos for understanding the neurology of addictions Fills an existing gap in the literature by serving as a “one-stop-shopping” synopsis of everything to do with the neuropathology of drugs of addiction and substance misuse Includes in each chapter: list of abbreviations, abstract, introduction, applications to other addictions and substance misuse, mini-dictionary of terms, summary points, 6+ figures and tables, and full references Offers coverage of preclinical, clinical, and population studies, from the cell to whole organs, and from the genome to whole body

Book excerpt: Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 depicts a dystopian society where technology, particularly in the form of mass media and censorship, plays a central role in controlling and manipulating the populace. However, the novel also explores the paradoxical relationship between technology and human connection, highlighting both its potential for liberation and its capacity for oppression. This research paper aims to analyze the multifaceted portrayal of technology in Fahrenheit 451, examining its role in fostering isolation and conformity while also exploring its subversive potential as a tool for resistance and introspection. Through a close reading of the novel's themes, characters, and narrative structure, this paper elucidates Bradbury's nuanced commentary on the complex interplay between technology, knowledge, and freedom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of addictive substances by adolescents and young adults is reported since many years. However, this was mostly confined to the population groups in cosmopolitan cities and to the use of LSD, marijuana etc. However in the recent period a disturbing trend of use of addictive substances by children studying in Municipal schools is noticed and the number of such children is on raise. Most of the children attending to municipal schools belong to low income groups and come from families where parents are illiterates. These parents have to struggle hard from dawn to dusk to make both ends meet. Consequently they do not find either time or energy to oversee the children's behavior and monitor their studies. Under these circumstances these children are getting used to the addictive substances like Gutka. Its trade name may vary thought the essential composition of the substance is same. The intake of these substances reportedly has a negative impact on the health and academic performance of these children.
