Book Synopsis The Television Code by : Deborah L. Jaramillo
Download or read book The Television Code written by Deborah L. Jaramillo and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The broadcasting industry’s trade association, the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), sought to sanitize television content via its self-regulatory document, the Television Code. The Code covered everything from the stories, images, and sounds of TV programs (no profanity, illicit sex and drinking, negative portrayals of family life and law enforcement officials, or irreverence for God and religion) to the allowable number of commercial minutes per hour of programming. It mandated that broadcasters make time for religious programming and discouraged them from charging for it. And it called for tasteful and accurate coverage of news, public events, and controversial issues. Using archival documents from the Federal Communications Commission, NBC, the NAB, and a television reformer, Senator William Benton, this book explores the run-up to the adoption of the 1952 Television Code from the perspectives of the government, TV viewers, local broadcasters, national networks, and the industry’s trade association. Deborah L. Jaramillo analyzes the competing motives and agendas of each of these groups as she builds a convincing case that the NAB actually developed the Television Code to protect commercial television from reformers who wanted more educational programming, as well as from advocates of subscription television, an alternative distribution model to the commercial system. By agreeing to self-censor content that viewers, local stations, and politicians found objectionable, Jaramillo concludes, the NAB helped to ensure that commercial broadcast television would remain the dominant model for decades to come.

Book Synopsis Media and Public Shaming by : Julian Petley
Download or read book Media and Public Shaming written by Julian Petley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The media today, and especially the national press, are frequently in conflict with people in the public eye, particularly politicians and celebrities, over the disclosure of private information and behaviour. Historically, journalists have argued that 'naming and shaming' serious wrong-doing and behaviour on the part of public officials is justified as being in the public interest. However, when the media spotlight is shone on perfetly legal personal behaviour, family issues and sexual orientation, and when, in particular this involves ordinary people, the question arises of whether such matters are really in the 'public interest' in any meaningful sense of the term. In this book, leading academics, commentators and journalists from a variety of different cultures consider the extent to which the media are entitled to reveal details of people's private lives, the laws and regulations which govern such relations, and whether these are still relevant in the age of social media.

Book Synopsis The Censor's Library by : Nicole Moore
Download or read book The Censor's Library written by Nicole Moore and published by University of Queensland Press(Australia). This book was released on 2012 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An absorbing exposé of the books we couldn't read, didn't read, didn't know about, and the reasons why. When Nicole Moore discovered the secret 'censor's library' in the National Archives - 793 boxes of books prohibited from the 1920s to the 1980s - so began a journey that resulted in this, the first comprehensive examination of Australian book censorship. For much of the twentieth century, Australia banned more books and more serious books than most other English-speaking or Western countries, from the Kama Sutra through to Huxley's Brave New World and Joyce's Ulysses. Federal publications censorship was a largely secret affair and deliberately kept from the knowledge of the Australian public until the scandals and protests of late last century. Censorship continues to attract heated debate, from the Henson affair to the national internet feed. Combining rigorous scholarship with the narrative tension of a thriller, The Censors Library is a provocative account of this scandalous history. Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diabetes, obesity and their related diseases make up one of the greatest challenges to human health in the 21st century. In A Modern Epidemic: Expert Perspectives on Obesity and Diabetes, a diverse group of researchers and clinicians from the University of Sydney has joined forces to discuss how to tackle these major health challenges. Obesity and diabetes are not just problems for the individual. They pose risks to the environmental, psychological and economic stability of the entire world. The solutions, therefore, need to be equally wide-ranging and accessible to all. Acknowledging this, the authors write in an engaging style about the causes and consequences of obesity and diabetes, as well as prevention and treatment: how to identify and mitigate the risk factors, deliver targeted and effective healthcare, and formulate global strategies to ultimately turn the tide on the 21st century's most devastating diseases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of classic and contemporary articles provides context for the study of advertising by exploring the historical, economic, and ideological factors that spawned the development of a consumer culture. It begins with articles that take an institutional and historical perspective to provide background for approaching the social and ethical concerns that evolve around advertising. Subsequent sections then address the legal and economic consequences of life in a material culture; the regulation of advertising in a culture that weighs free speech against the needs of society; and the ethics of promoting materialism to consumers. The concluding section includes links to a variety of resources such as trade association codes of ethics, standards and guidelines for particular types of advertising, and information about self-regulatory organizations.
Book Synopsis Crime, Criminalization and Refugees by : Darren Palmer
Download or read book Crime, Criminalization and Refugees written by Darren Palmer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-07 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores criminal justice responses to Sudanese Australians, crime and victimization. Based on research in four major Queensland communities, it adopts a multi-faceted approach to capture the ‘voices’ of various interest groups. Challenging the concept that Sudanese Australian refugees are the criminal ‘other’ that primary definers such as the media or would have us believe, it also highlights the differently situated subgroups of Sudanese Australians with a focus on how individuals and groups develop and maintain a sense of belonging: not always successful and not always law abiding but by no means indicative of the reductive notion of the criminogenic refugee.
