Book Synopsis Dictionary of Environmental Law by : Alan Gilpin
Download or read book Dictionary of Environmental Law written by Alan Gilpin and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'There is no shortage of recent dictionaries covering environmental law on reference shelves. What distinguishes this titles is its inclusive coverage of the international scene. For example, where all environmental law dictionaries have an entry for acid rain, Gilpin's Dictionary informs the reader about acid rain problems in Sweden, Norway, Germany and The Netherlands in addition to the United States and Canada. This Dictionary is useful, with balanced coverage of environmental issues throughout the world. . . due to its global inclusiveness and clear, nontechnical language, this dictionary should prove very useful on shelves of all types of libraries and for environmental, political, and legal practitioners.' – Georgia Briscoe, American Reference Books Annual 2002 'Gilpin addresses the elements of environmental law with an indispensable survey of the subject. . . . The strength of this dictionary lies in its international coverage. . . . Language is nontechnical and easily accessible to general readers. . . . Gilpin is recommended for those libraries and individuals interested in international environmental law.' – S.R. Moore, Choice 'I thought Gilpin's work was excellent. The coverage was thorough and extremely helpful without getting overly bogged down in unnecessary details. I also felt that there was a very useful balance between national coverage (as of European Union and United States statutes, concepts and cases) and international agreements. I am certain that scholars, political decision makers, legal practitioners, environmental activists and reference libraries will want to have Gilpin handy. It may well become an indispensable reference work in environmental law and policy.' – Thomas S. Ulen, University of Illinois, US This new dictionary makes an important and innovative contribution to the reference literature on the environment. International in scope, it provides up-to-date entries on macro and micro issues in environmental law in both developed and developing countries. Written by an author with both practical experience in the field, and six previous dictionaries to his name, this book adopts non-technical language to improve access to key topics in environmental law. It combines the use of case studies, best practice models, straightforward definitions and clear explanatory boxes. This dictionary will be invaluable to everyone involved with environmental law; including students of law as well as those in engineering and the social sciences. It will also provide essential reference for all official national and international agencies, environmental protection groups and NGOs, plus environment and planning departments at every level.

Download or read book Altered Ecologies written by Simon Haberle and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like a star chart this volume orientates the reader to the key issues and debates in Pacific and Australasian biogeography, palaeoecology and human ecology. A feature of this collection is the diversity of approaches ranging from interpretation of the biogeographic significance of plant and animal distributional patterns, pollen analysis from peats and lake sediments to discern Quaternary climate change, explanation of the patterns of faunal extinction events, the interplay of fire on landscape evolution, and models of the environmental consequences of human settlement patterns. The diversity of approaches, geographic scope and academic rigor are a fitting tribute to the enormous contributions of Geoff Hope. As made apparent in this volume, Hope pioneered multidisciplinary understanding of the history and impacts of human cultures in the Australia- Pacific region, arguably the globe's premier model systems for understanding the consequences of humans colonization on ecological systems. The distinguished scholars who have contributed to this volume also demonstrate Hope's enduring contribution as an inspirational research leader, collaborator and mentor. Terra Australis leave no doubt that history matters, not only for land management, but more importantly, in alerting settler and indigenous societies alike to their past ecological impacts and future environmental trajectories.

Book Synopsis The Archaeology of the Aru Islands, Eastern Indonesia by : Sue O'Connor
Download or read book The Archaeology of the Aru Islands, Eastern Indonesia written by Sue O'Connor and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes the results of the first archaeological survey and excavations carried out in the fascinating and remote Aru Islands, Eastern Indonesia between 1995 and 1997. The naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, who stopped here in search of the Birds of Paradise on his voyage through the Indo-Malay Archipelago in the 1850s, was the first to draw attention to the group. The results reveal a complex and fascinating history covering the last 30,000 years from its early settlement by hunter-gatherers, the late Holocene arrival of ceramic producing agriculturalists, later associations with the Bird of Paradise trade and the colonial expansion of the Dutch trading empires. The excavations and finds from two large Pleistocene caves, Liang Lemdubu and Nabulei Lisa, are reported in detail documenting the changing environmental and cultural history of the islands from when they were connected to Greater Australia and used by hunter/gatherers to their formation as islands and use by agriculturalists. The results of the excavation of the late Neolithic - Metal Age midden at Wangil are discussed, as is the mysterious pre-Colonial fort at Ujir and the 350-year old ruins of forts and a church associated with the Dutch garrisons.

Book Synopsis Oceanic Explorations by : Stuart Bedford
Download or read book Oceanic Explorations written by Stuart Bedford and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lapita comprises an archaeological horizon that is fundamental to the understanding of human colonisation and settlement of the Pacific as it is associated with the arrival of the common ancestors of the Polynesians and many Austronesian-speaking Melanesians more than 3000 years ago. While Lapita archaeology has captured the imagination and sustained the focus of archaeologists for more than 50 years, more recent discoveries have inspired renewed interpretations and assessments. Oceanic Explorations reports on a number of these latest discoveries and includes papers which reassess the Lapita phenomenon in light of this new data. They reflect on a broad range of interrelated themes including Lapita chronology, patterns of settlement, migration, interaction and exchange, ritual behaviour, sampling strategies and ceramic analyses, all of which relate to aspects highlighting both advances and continuing impediments associated with Lapita research.

Book Synopsis Islands of Inquiry by : Geoffrey Richard Clark
Download or read book Islands of Inquiry written by Geoffrey Richard Clark and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Many of the papers in this volume present new and innovative research into the processes of maritime colonisation, processes that affect archaeological contexts from islands to continents. Others shift focus from process to the archaeology of maritime places from the Bering to the Torres Straits, providing highly detailed discussions of how living by and with the sea is woven into all elements of human life from subsistence to trade and to ritual. Of equal importance are more abstract discussions of islands as natural places refashioned by human occupation, either through the introduction of new organisms or new systems of production and consumption. These transformation stories gain further texture (and variety) through close examinations of some of the more significant consequences of colonisation and migration, particularly the creation of new cultural identities. A final set of papers explores the ways in which the techniques of archaelogical sciences have provided insights into the fauna of the islands and the human history of such places."--Provided by publisher.
