Download or read book Pearl Harbor written by Homer N. Wallin and published by . This book was released on 2001-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pearl Harbor will long stand out in mens minds as an example of the results of basic unpreparedness of a peace loving nation, of highly efficient treacherous surprise attack and of the resulting unification of America into a single tidal wave of purpose to victory. Therefore, all will be interested in this unique narrative by Admiral Wallin. The Navy has long needed a succinct account of the salvage operations at Pearl Harbor that miraculously resurrected what appeared to be a forever shattered fleet. Admiral Wallin agreed to undertake the job. He was exactly the right man for it _ in talent, in perception, and in experience. He had served intimately with Admiral Nimitz and with Admiral Halsey in the South Pacific, has commanded three different Navy Yards, and was a highly successful Chief of the Bureau of Ships. On 7 December 1941 the then Captain Wallin was serving at Pearl Harbor. He witnessed the events of that shattering and unifying "Day of Infamy." His mind began to race at high speeds at once on the problems and means of getting the broken fleet back into service for its giant task. Unless the United States regained control of the sea, even greater disaster loomed. Without victory at sea, tyranny soon would surely rule all Asia and Europe. In a matter of time it would surely rule the Americas. Captain Wallin salvaged most of the broken Pearl Harbor fleet that went on to figure prominently in the United States Navys victory. So the account he masterfully tells covers what he masterfully accomplished. The United States owes him an unpayable debt for this high service among many others in his long career.

Book Synopsis The Victory at Sea by : William S. Sims
Download or read book The Victory at Sea written by William S. Sims and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 1921 Pulitzer Prize in History. Wartime commander, tactical innovator, military educator, iconoclastic troublemaker, Pulitzer Prize winner—those categories have only come together in a single military leader in American history. They all accurately describe Admiral William S. Sims (1858–1936), Commander of U.S. Naval Forces in European Waters during World War I. Sims spent nearly an entire career rocking the boat and challenging the conventional wisdom, and yet he ended up in London in one of the most important naval missions in history as the U.S. Navy’s commander responsible for coordinating the war with First Sea Lord Admiral Sir John Jellico and the allies. Part operational history, part personal memoir, when The Victory at Sea was published in 1921 it offered the first account of the naval operations against the German U-boat threat and revealed insights about the dangers the submarines posed to Britain and the war effort. Awarded the Pulitzer Prize for history, the book remains a standard text about the war, but also provides important insights for 21st century readers, including understanding the challenge of antisubmarine warfare, the complexity of planning military operations with allies and partners, and issues of military command and control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The impact of technology on society is clear and unmistakeable. The influence of society on technology is more subtle. The 13 essays in this book have been written by a diverse group of scholars united by a common interest in creating a new field - the sociology of technology. They draw on a wide array of case studies - from cooking stoves to missile systems, from 15th-century Portugal to today's Al labs - to outline an original research program based on a synthesis of ideas from the social studies of science and the history of technology. Together they affirm the need for a study of technology that gives equal weight to technical, social, economic, and political questions"--Back cover.
Book Synopsis Germany's High Sea Fleet in the World War by : Reinhard Scheer
Download or read book Germany's High Sea Fleet in the World War written by Reinhard Scheer and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2014-04-30 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anglo-German naval rivalry before 1914 had been expected to culminate in a cataclysmic fleet action in the North Sea once war was declared, a battle upon which the outcome of the war would depend: yet the two fleets met only once, at Jutland in 1916, and the battle was far from conclusive. In his own account of the war in the North Sea, first published in 1920, Admiral Scheer, the German commander at Jutland, gives his own explanation for the failure of either fleet to achieve the decisive victory expected of it, particularly the failure of his own operation plans that resulted in the battle of Jutland. This book is an invaluable account of one of the most important theatres of the First World War, written by one of its most senior commanders.
